Jockey 'more upset than anybody' after horse death
Jockey Michael Nolan says he was "absolutely heartbroken" and "more upset than anybody" after his horse Celebre D'Allen died following the Grand National.The 13-year-old horse had led towards the end of Saturday's race at Aintree but was pulled up by Nolan after the final fence before collapsing on the track."Ten strides before the second-last fence I thought I might win the Grand National and then two strides after the last I knew something had gone wrong," Nolan told the Racing Post., external"That's how quick I went from travelling so easy and you can almost see the winning post from where you are, to getting off him and trying your best to help him; to coming in and getting a ban and then abuse on social media."Nolan was handed a 10-day suspension after Aintree stewards ruled he had "continued in the race when the horse appeared to have no more to give and was clearly losing ground after the second-last fence".He deactivated his social media accounts after receiving a high volume of abuse.After initially showing signs of recovery, Celebre D'Allen's condition "deteriorated significantly" and he died on Tuesday.A post-mortem examination determined he died from a "severe bacterial respiratory infection" that developed after the race.Tests found the horse's immune system was "severely compromised" after the "exercise-associated episode" during the race.But the post-mortem found that the effects of the incident had "concluded by the time of death"."It's been portrayed that I don't care about horses," Nolan added."That's what the media are saying but in fact it's the other way round. I'm obsessed with horses; I love them and I care deeply. I was absolutely heartbroken when the horse died, more than anyone can imagine."The only thing I want people to know is that I'm more upset than anybody that something has happened and that if I'd thought for a moment that I might cost him his life or cause him a bad injury, then I would never have jumped the last."Celebre D'Allen's death prompted criticism from animal rights groups, with Animal Rising saying the sport of horse racing was to blame for the horse's death.

The Odyssey, which stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, and more, appears to be filming at Findlater Castle in Moray. According to VisitAberdeenshire, Findlater Castle will be inaccessible from May 27 until July 25, due to 'a private commercial activity'. The closure also includes the Barnyards of Findlater car park, with alternative coastal routes provided by Aberdeenshire Council. Path diversions have been put in place along the Findlater Castle and Cullen to Sandend coastal paths, with the route from Logie Head to Sandend to be closed on Friday, June 27 for 24 hours. Filming in Moray for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey expected to begin later this month Set for release next year, Nolan's epic film will follow the journey of the ancient Greek king of Ithaca as he returns home following the Trojan War. Bookmakers shorten Los Angeles with Economics to miss Ascot
The William Haggas-trained Economics had been seen as one of the main dangers to Aidan O'Brien's star, following a three-year-old campaign that saw him win the Dante Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes. He was due to make his reappearance on day two of the Royal fixture, but Haggas told the Racing Post he would not be running and was 'out in the short term, but it's no big deal and hopefully he can be back in action soon'. In his absence Los Angeles is the 3-1 favourite from 7-2 with William Hill, with Owen Burrows' Champion Stakes winner Anmaat next best at 4-1. William Hill spokesman Lee Phelps said: 'News that William Haggas' Economics has been ruled out of Royal Ascot has shaken up the Prince of Wales's Stakes market. 'With one of his key competitors out, we have clipped Los Angeles from 7-2 to 3-1 at the head of the market. 'One horse we're now fearing could be a popular pick is Anmaat after a strong reappearance behind Los Angeles at the Curragh and the Champion Stakes winner could be the punters' pick at 4-1. 'Economics had been third in the betting, but that place now belongs to Wathnan Racing's French raider Map Of Stars (5-1).' Man Utd star's emotional message after being released by Amorim – 'Once a red'
Several Manchester United academy graduates have joined veteran first teamers in being released by the Red Devils as Ruben Amorim looks to build his new era at the club Manchester United academy starlet James Nolan has expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the club after parting ways with the Red Devils. It was reported early last month that three youngsters - Nolan, Jack Kingdon and Sam Murray - would be allowed to leave as free agents this summer. United published their retained list on Monday and the aforementioned players' departures were made official. Nolan spent last season on loan with Inverness Caledonian Thistle in Scottish League One, where he made 33 appearances and scored his first career goal. The 19-year-old defender will now look for a new club to begin his next chapter. Taking to Instagram, Nolan wrote: "My time at Manchester United has now come to an end. "From joining at the age of seven to now leaving at 19 it has been my second home. I just want to say a massive thank you to the coaches, players and everyone at the club for making my time unforgettable. I've made memories to last a life time. "Once a Red always a Red." Nolan is a versatile player and mainly played at full-back for Caledonian Thistle. Central defender Jack Kingdon also shared his gratitude in a similar social media post, saying: 'After nearly 5 years at this club, it is my time to move onto the next chapter in my career. 'The experiences this club has given me I will always be grateful for. The lads, staff and fans have been outstanding with me whilst I've been here. "Manchester United will always have a place in my heart, but it is time for the next chapter. Thank you, Reds." Kingdon as an academy product was instrumental in the Under-18 treble-winning team in 2023/2024. The 19-year-old, who is a Scotland youth international, was also excellent on loan with Rochdale after signing for the club in the winter window. It's understood that Kingdon was on the verge of signing for Ineos-owned FC Lausanne Sport on loan in January before he signed for Rochdale, who he helped reach the National League play-offs. Academy goalkeepers Tom Myles and Tom Wooster have also been released this summer, with the official club website's statement reading: 'The Academy is proud of all of our departing young players throughout the age groups. They will be supported in securing contracts at new clubs, provided with a bespoke aftercare programme, and will always have a lifelong association with Manchester United.' Joining them in the mass clearout after a disastrous season for the first team are established stars Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof. Tom Heaton is also included on the list of free transfers, however, the club remains in discussions with the goalkeeper about a new deal that would see him remain part of the squad for the 2025/26 season. It is understood that there will be a limited number of spots available in Ruben Amorim's squad next season as the Portuguese head coach looks to transform the club's fortunes with new additions.
