A NEW sustainable fashion shop in Charles Street is making waves – not just with its carefully curated racks of preloved clothing, but with its mission to give clothes a second life and people a fresh sense of style.
Evergreens Outlet, which opened in September 2024 at 88a Charles Street, was founded by a former oil industry professional who made the leap from corporate life to conscious consumerism.
'After 15 years in the oil industry, I wanted to do something more environmentally aware,' the founder Jess Holmes said. 'Working in the recycling sector opened my eyes to just how many good-quality clothes are already out there – and how much we throw away.'
From selling a handful of preloved pieces online to running a vibrant high street shop, the journey has been swift – and successful. Evergreens has already diverted around half a tonne of clothing and items from landfill since opening its doors.
The shop offers a wide selection of handpicked garments – from designer labels and retro prints to wardrobe staples – with something for almost every taste. The idea is simple: to make stylish, sustainable fashion more affordable and accessible to the local community.
But Evergreens is about more than just clothes. 'I want it to be a welcoming space where people can express themselves through fashion,' the founder explained. 'It's about clothing with character, history, and a story.'
To celebrate its growth and raise funds for this year's Founder's Day, Evergreens is hosting a special fashion show on Friday, May 24. The theme is Fashion Through the Ages: 1920 Onwards and will include a student-designed outfit, an occasionwear showcase, and even a prize for best dressed. There's no dress code – just a chance to wear something you love.
'What began with selling a few preloved pieces online quickly sparked a deeper passion.
'When I spotted that 88a Charles Street was vacant, I knew instantly: this had to be my shop. The location and charm of the space felt perfect. I'd always dreamed of creating something affordable and accessible for our local community and Evergreens was born from that vision.
'My aim has always been simple: to make stylish, sustainable fashion more accessible. There's something incredibly special about giving a garment a second life – it's better for the planet, kinder on your wallet, and often far more unique than what you'll find in mainstream shops. Evergreens Outlet is a celebration of style that lasts, clothing with character, history, and a story.
'I often hear people say, 'I love this, but I've nowhere to wear it.' Well, now's your chance,' Jess added.

A shade was an initial price of £49 was also displayed with the same price cut, going for just £4.90. The Facebook user posted: "Quite literally the best saving of my life here at Dunelm today." They added: "£98 reduced to £9 for both. Buzzing." Other users were quick to also share stories of their great bargain buys from Dunelm. "I got a £119 dressing table for £11.90 from there. Was so pleased," one commented. Another said: "I got a fake plant from there today was £30 down from £7.50 in Falkirk." A third posted: "I got some bedside units for £5 each instead of £119 each in my local one. Molly-Mae swears by £22 Dunelm buy she 'can't go anywhere without' for great sleep & says it's the 'best thing' she owns "Although they tried not to sell them to me at that price." It's not the only big offer available at Dunelm in recent weeks. The retailer has slashed the price of a summer essential by 20 per cent. Dunelm's Fogarty Temperature Regulating Wool All Seasons Duvet has been reduced from £70 to £56. It is also available in a range of sizes - all of which are discounted. A description on Dunelm's website reads: "This duvet from the experts at Fogarty offers year round comfort." They add: "The fibres are breathable allowing your body temperature to be regulated as you sleep. "Therefore, you will be able to use this duvet all year round to keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter."

Shoppers react to Christmas stock spotted in shops in June
And it's not only Christmas items on sale in June that have caused a stir, but 'spooky season' Halloween stuff is also gradually appearing in shops. A post on the Facebook group Extreme Bargains and Savings UK got people talking this week, as a picture of Christmas sweets was posted in Home Bargains. While some shoppers were annoyed by the idea that Christmas had come early, others believed it was a sensible way of planning ahead. One person commented: 'This must be a wind up!' Another added: 'I don't want to think of Christmas just yet. It's only June.' 'Taking the p***,' another said. 'Omg like it's only June! What the hell,' one shocked user commented. But others thought it was a good idea for budgeting, stating: 'Only 29 weeks until Christmas, that's only seven monthly wage packets left.' Discontinued UK Sweets/Chocolates While one person commented: 'Some people can only afford to buy a little at a time, leaving them having to start buying as soon as it's over. It's never too early.' Facebook users also remarked on other stores that they've spotted Christmas and Halloween stock in months in advance. Rachel Reeves has warned that the Israel-Iran conflict could push up prices as costs of oil and gas surged. The Chancellor said the intense fighting had driven up oil and gas prices by 10% - and expressed concern about the impact on trade. Concerns are rising over the Strait of Hormuz - the waterway between Iran and the Arabian peninsula which is vital for global energy supplies. She told Sky News: "There are two immediate concerns. The first is around oil and gas prices. Over the course of this week, oil and gas prices have gone up by just over 10%. They are stille down compared to a few months ago but of course we are keeping an eye on that. "At the same time, trade routes are very important through the Middle East. We've seen disruption there in the past, partly because of the Houthi attacks for example, and so that is of course a concern."
