Punjab FC beat Odisha FC 3-0 in Kalinga Super Cup
Bhubaneswar, Apr 22 (UNI) Punjab FC delivered a clinical and composed performance to book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Kalinga Super Cup, dispatching Odisha FC 3-0 in a one-sided Round of 16 clash at the Kalinga Stadium here.
Goals from Asmir Suljic (14'), Norberto "Pulga" Vidal (69') and Nihal Sudeesh (90') sealed the
result for Punjab FC, who capitalised on Odisha's poor finishing and defensive lapses throughout
the match on Monday night.
Punjab FC came into the game on the back of a difficult ISL campaign, having finished 10th with just eight wins. But they looked like a transformed side in Bhubaneswar, combining resolute defending with incisive attacking play.
Odisha FC, on the other hand, struggled to shake off their recent inconsistency — they had won just two of their last seven matches and were missing key striker Roy Krishna due to an injury.
Odisha were undone by Punjab's fast start. In the 14th minute, Asmir Suljic calmly slotted home the opener following a sharp exchange. Sulijic's combination with Vidal repeatedly exposed Odisha's backline, which looked shaky without the presence of a strong defensive leader.
The Juggernauts responded with a flurry of chances, but lacked the finishing touch. Hugo Boumous came close in the 43rd minute with a curling effort from the edge of the box, but his shot was tame and easily gathered by Muheet Shabir, who stood tall in the Punjab goal.
The second half saw more urgency from Odisha, but their forward line continued to misfire. Jerry Lalrinzuala had a golden chance in the 66th minute after a neat cutback from Amey Ranawade,
but he completely miscued his attempt, summing up Odisha's night in front of goal.
Three minutes later, Punjab made them pay. Vidal, who had been pulling the strings in midfield, shrugged off a challenge, turned his marker, and rifled a powerful left-footed shot into the far
corner to make it 2-0. It was a deserved goal for the Argentine playmaker, who orchestrated
much of Punjab's attacking rhythm.
Odisha, though determined to fight back, continued to waste their few clear openings. Their task was made even harder by a well-organised Punjab defence, with goalkeeper Muheet putting in a strong display, including a key early save with his right leg to deny Boumous.
In the final minute of regulation time, Punjab FC sealed the match in style. Substitute Nihal Sudeesh latched onto a through ball, coolly rounded the goalkeeper, and slotted it into an empty net to complete a commanding 3-0 win.
Pulga Vidal was presented the Kalinga Player of the Match award by Bijay Kumar Swain, OAS, Additional Secretary, Sports & Youth Services Department, Govt of Odisha.

Shreyas Iyer's act in IPL 2025 Final labelled 'criminal offence', deemed punishable by 'two-match ban': 'No apology'
Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh has launched a scathing attack on Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer for what he termed a 'criminal offence' in the IPL 2025 final. Iyer, who was dismissed for just one run in two deliveries, played what Yograj called an unforgivable shot at a crucial juncture, contributing heavily to Punjab's narrow six-run loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the title clash on Tuesday. RCB, who ended an 18-year wait for their maiden IPL trophy, posted 190/9 after being put in to bat by Punjab at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. While the bowlers, led by Arshdeep Singh (3/40), Kyle Jamieson (3/48), and Yuzvendra Chahal (1/37), managed to rein in RCB's big hitters to some extent, the chase came down to the final over. Punjab's innings was built on solid starts from Priyansh Arya (24) and Prabhsimran Singh (26), with Josh Inglis (39) and Shashank Singh (61* off 30 balls) keeping them in the hunt till the end. Despite Shashank's 22-run blitz in the final over, PBKS fell agonizingly short at 184/7, and the turning point was undeniably the early loss of their skipper. Reacting to Iyer's soft dismissal, caught behind off Romario Shepherd, Yograj did not mince words. 'The shot which Shreyas Iyer played in the final was a criminal offence, according to me. Ashok Mankad told me about this criminal offence, which comes under Section 302. He also told me that the repercussions of this are that you will be banned for two matches. What Shreyas did yesterday is not acceptable. There is no apology for that," he told ANI. RCB's bowling attack, including Krunal Pandya (2/17), Yash Dayal (1/18), and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/38), applied the brakes at crucial moments, and Pandya was deservingly named Player of the Match for his match-winning spell. While RCB ended their long wait for a maiden title, the celebrations were marred on Wednesday after a stampede in Bengaluru resulted in at least 11 deaths, with several others injured. The stampede took place during RCB's title-winning celebrations, and the franchise is facing heat for reportedly not adhering to police guidelines.

Krunal Pandya opens up on conversation with brother Hardik after RCB's IPL 2025 triumph: '9 trophies in Pandya household in 11 years'
Krunal Pandya. New Delhi: Krunal Pandya, who received Player of the Match in the IPL 2025 final, said he celebrated the win with his brother Hardik and added how the family has won nine IPL trophies together over the past eleven years. Buying Krunal Pandya for Rs 5.75 crore, Royal Challengers Bangalore saw him do extremely well in the final match, getting two wickets for only 17 runs in four overs and thrilling the audience. Krunal's exceptional bowling performance was pivotal in securing a six-run win for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Punjab Kings, preventing Punjab from reaching their 191-run target and marking RCB's first IPL victory of the season. During his Player of the Match acceptance speech, Krunal Pandya recounted conversations with his brother Hardik, referencing their combined IPL championship wins over the past ten years. 'When I joined RCB, I said that I loved winning trophies. After three and a half months, glad I was able to fulfil what I said on Day 1. Been pretty good – 10 years, 4 IPL trophies. I also told Hardik on the phone that there will be 9 IPL trophies in the Pandya household in 11 years,' Krunal said in the post-match presentation. Because of his good bowling performance, Krunal Pandya dismissed Prabhsimran Singh (26) and Josh Inglis (39) which greatly slowed down Punjab's run-chase. Most of his achievements resulted from mixing up his speed and the bravery to follow this difficult plan, where errors are hard to avoid. 'When we batted in the first innings, I was sitting outside and chatting with the batters. I realised the slower you bowl, the better. But in this format, as a bowler, you need guts to do that because the margin of error is small,' he said. 'I just backed myself and thought that if I'm able to vary my pace and keep it more on the slower side, I'll create chances rather than just coming and firing it in. What has been my biggest strength is learning what the situation requires. I've always backed my gut and instinct,' said Krunal. He clinched 17 wickets in 15 matches at an average of 19.52, with best bowling figures of 4/41.
