Pakistan hands over 35 tons of humanitarian aid to earthquake-hit Myanmar
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has handed over 35 tons of emergency relief aid to Myanmar for its earthquake-affected people, Pakistani state media reported on Sunday, as death toll from last week's massive earthquake in Myanmar neared to 3,500.
The 7.7-magnitude quake hit a wide swath of the country, causing significant damage to six regions and states including the capital Naypyitaw. The earthquake left many areas without power, telephone or cell connections and damaged roads and bridges, making the full extent of the devastation hard to assess.
It also worsened an already dire humanitarian crisis triggered by the country's civil war that has internally displaced more than 3 million people and left nearly 20 million in need, according to the United Nations.
Pakistan had dispatched the second consignment of humanitarian aid through an air cargo flight from Islamabad to Yangon, Myanmar, according to Pakistan's Press Information Department (PID).
'Pakistan's Ambassador to Myanmar Imran Haider officially gave the consignment to Chief Minister of Yangon Region at Yangon International Airport,' the Radio Pakistan broadcaster reported.
'This shipment, comprising 35 tons of goods, brings the total relief assistance dispatched to Myanmar after the recent earthquake to 70 tons.'
The development came as rain compounded misery and presented new hurdles for relief efforts in Myanmar on Sunday. With people either having lost their homes entirely or reluctant to spend time in cracked and unstable structures, many residents have been sleeping outside in tents.
United Nations aid chief Tom Fletcher said in a video filmed in Mandalay, Myanmar's second largest city, that food, water, and power repairs were needed urgently.
Many people in the area are still without shelter, he said, describing the scale of damage in the city as 'epic.'
'We need to get tents and hope to survivors as they rebuild their shattered lives,' Fletcher wrote on X.

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations said on Monday that it has only been able to bring minimal flour into Gaza since Israel lifted an aid blockade three weeks ago and that has mostly been looted by armed gangs or taken by starving Palestinians. The organization has transported 4,600 metric tons of wheat flour into Gaza via the Kerem Shalom crossing, the only entry point Israel allows it to use, Deputy UN spokesperson Fahan Haq told reporters. According to World Food Programme guidelines, 4,600 metric tons of flour would provide roughly eight days' worth of bread for Gaza's 2 million residents, based on a standard daily ration of 300 grams per person. Haq called for Israel to let in far more aid via multiple crossings and routes. The UN has mostly delivered flour along with limited medical and nutrition items since Israel lifted the 11-week blockade in mid-May. Experts warn Gaza is at risk of famine, with the rate of young children suffering acute malnutrition nearly tripling. Israel and the United States want the UN to work through the controversial new Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, but the UN has refused, questioning its neutrality and accusing the distribution model of militarizing aid and forcing displacement. Israel and the United States have accused Hamas of stealing aid from the UN-led operations, which the militants deny. The GHF uses private US security and logistics firms to operate. It began operations in Gaza on May 26 and said on Monday so far it has given out 11.4 million meals. Israel makes the UN offload aid on the Palestinian side of the Kerem Shalom crossing, where it then has to be picked by the UN and aid groups already in Gaza. The UN has accused Israel of regularly denying access requests.

KYIV, Ukraine: Russia launched 479 drones at Ukraine in the war 's biggest overnight drone bombardment, the Ukrainian air force said Monday. Apart from drones, 20 missiles of various types were fired at different parts of Ukraine, according to the air force, which said the barrage targeted mainly central and western areas of Ukraine. Ukraine's air defenses destroyed 277 drones and 19 missiles in mid-flight, an air force statement said, claiming that only 10 drones or missiles hit their target. It was not possible to independently verify the claim. Russia's aerial attacks usually start late in the evening and end in the morning, because drones are harder to spot in the dark. Russia has relentlessly battered civilian areas of Ukraine with Shahed drones during the more than 3-year war. The attacks have killed more that 12,000 Ukrainian civilians, according to the United Nations. Russia says it targets only military targets.

The reception was attended by Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Saudi Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Sheikh, several princes, senior scholars and sheikhs, senior officials of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, ministers, and the commanders of the military sectors and scouts participating in this year's Hajj. In a speech, the Crown Prince, on behalf of King Salman, congratulated the attendees as well as Saudi citizens, expatriates, and the Hajj pilgrims on the blessed occasion of Eid Al-Adha. 'We implore God Almighty to return this blessed occasion to our nation and to Muslims around the world with continued goodness, prosperity, and peace. Al-Bassami said that a total of 213,323 personnel from the security and military sectors are participating in implementing the directives of the leadership to facilitate the performance of the Hajj rituals in safety and security, relying on the help of God and fortified by their professional capabilities, field experience, and knowledge gained from the Saudi Vision, led by the Crown Prince, making serving the pilgrims one of their most important priorities and noble goals. He pointed out that the successes achieved by the Hajj security plans to date are the result of the directives of King Salman and the unlimited support of the Crown Prince for the continuous improvement of service to the pilgrims.
