Mother still in ICU, Gautam Gambhir decides to fly back to England to join India squad before Test series

When the going gets tough, the tough get going and there are few better examples of toughness than Gautam Gambhir. Someone who never gave an inch to the opposition and always put the team first during his playing days has once again set an example for the others. This time, as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Gambhir, who had to rush back home hours before the start of the India vs India A intrasquad match at Beckenham due to his mother's sudden cardiac arrest, has taken the tough decision to fly back to England even though his mother, Seema, remains in the ICU in Delhi. Hindustan Times can confirm that India head coach Gautam Gambhir will leave for the UK on June 16 (Monday) and will join the team in Headingley the next day. 'Gambhir will leave for the UK today. He will join the team in London and then the entire squad will travel to Headingley on Tuesday," a source close to Gambhir told Hindustan Times. It is learnt that Gambhir's mother is currently out of danger and is recovering well but the doctors have decided to keep her in the ICU for better monitoring. Gambhir's mother suffered a cardiac arrest on June 11 (Wednesday). Upon hearing the news, Gambhir rushed back to India the next day. As soon as Gambhir learnt that his mother hi stable, he informed the board that he would immediately fly back to England to join Team India in its preparation for the five-match Test series in England, which starts with the first Test in Headingley on June 20. In Gambhir's absence, the Indian team was under assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and bowling coach Morne Morkel. The four-day affair ended in three days with captain Shubman Gill, batter KL Rahul and all-rounder Shardul Thakur making useful contributions. The match was closed-door affair and did not bear a first-class status butt the Indian cricketers approached it like a normal game with high intensity as it was their only chance to get a match-like feel before the Test series begins. Gambhir's decision to fly back to England at the first opportunity should not surprise anyone. The former India opener is always known to prioritise national duty. His presence in the dressing room is immensely important before the start of the series, which will mark a new chapter in Indian Test cricket's future. After the retirement of stalwarts Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli, India will be led by new captain Shubman Gill for the first time. The team has experienced cricketers like KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah in its arsenal, but the absence of Kohli, Rohit, Ashwin, and pacer Mohammed Shami (not picked due to fitness issues) is bound to leave any team weak.

India tour of England: Without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who will be India's best bet with bat?

Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill As India gear up for their five-Test tour of England beginning June 20 at Headingley, all eyes will be on the next generation of Indian batters. With stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli no longer in the Test setup, the spotlight shifts to KL Rahul , Yashasvi Jaiswal , and newly-appointed skipper Shubman Gill—each bearing different responsibilities and career arcs as they look to anchor India's top order in alien conditions. KL Rahul: A legacy waiting for consistency At 33, KL Rahul is the most experienced batter in the squad. With 955 runs from 13 Tests against England, including three centuries, Rahul's quality is undeniable—but so is his inconsistency. His 149 at The Oval in 2018 remains iconic, crafted when India were tottering at 121/5. Yet, in the same series, Rahul aggregated only 152 runs in his remaining nine innings. The pattern repeated in the 2021 tour, where his majestic 129 at Lord's helped India to a famous win, only to be followed by single-digit scores thereafter. Rahul averages 34.11 in English conditions and has often struggled to convert promising starts. With the experience of over a decade behind him, this series could define whether Rahul finally sheds his tag of "flashes of brilliance" and matures into India's dependable pillar in the middle order. Yashasvi Jaiswal : Young blood, big dreams In contrast stands 23-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has stormed into Test cricket with a blend of fearlessness and flair. He enters this tour as India's highest scorer in the previous Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the team's new senior opener. Jaiswal's home Test average of 60.61 across 10 matches is stunning, but this tour will be his biggest challenge yet. His away average (44.18) is respectable, though the swinging Dukes ball, early movement, and long spells from England's seamers will ask questions he's never faced before. With no Virat or Rohit to turn to for guidance, Jaiswal must lead India's charge from the top with composure and intent. His hunger and recent form make him a key player to watch. Shubman Gill: A captain with a point to prove Shubman Gill takes on the toughest job in cricket which is leading India in a Test series in England, while still evolving as a player himself. His overall Test average at home is an impressive 42.03, but it drops significantly overseas (29.50), and his record in England is particularly underwhelming: just 88 runs in three matches at an average of 14.66. Now, with captaincy adding weight to his already high expectations, the question isn't just about runs, it's about temperament. Gill will be judged not only on how he bats but how he leads a team missing its most iconic modern-day batters. Former teammate Cheteshwar Pujara has expressed faith in Gill's ability to rise to the occasion. For now, belief will have to carry him until the runs come. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? A defining series for India's next batting order India's tour of England in 2025 will be the first full Test series without either Kohli or Rohit since 2011. The burden of scoring and leadership is now shared between a veteran seeking consistency (Rahul), a young gun on the rise (Jaiswal), and a captain still forging his identity (Gill). Their performances may well shape not only the outcome of this series, but also set the tone for India's fortunes in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.

'You destroyed them after 2011': Yograj Singh claims BCCI wanted MS Dhoni sacked, slams selectors for ending 7 careers

Yograj Singh and MS Dhoni Former India cricketer Yograj Singh has lashed out at the BCCI selectors of the early 2010s, accusing them of mismanaging the careers of several senior players in the aftermath of India's 2011 World Cup triumph. Speaking in a recent interview with InsideSport , Yograj claimed that as many as seven prominent players were 'pushed into the gutter' following India's disastrous overseas Test tours in England and Australia in 2011–12. 'You destroyed these boys for no reason,' he said, naming key figures from the World Cup-winning squad who were sidelined: Gautam Gambhir , Yuvraj Singh , Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Kaif, VVS Laxman, and Rahul Dravid. While Dravid and Laxman retired from Test cricket soon after, the rest were gradually phased out across formats and were not part of India's 2015 World Cup plans. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Yograj also recalled the turmoil surrounding MS Dhoni 's captaincy during this period. According to him, the selection committee, including former cricketer Mohinder Amarnath, had agreed to remove Dhoni as skipper following India's 0-4 whitewash in Australia. However, the decision was allegedly blocked by then BCCI President N. Srinivasan. Kuldeep Yadav hints at spin-friendly wicket ahead of England Test series Amarnath, in a 2012 interview with CNN-IBN, had confirmed that the selectors were not allowed to act independently and expressed frustration over not being given a free hand to make decisions in the best interest of Indian cricket. Despite the internal pressure, Dhoni remained captain in Tests until the end of 2014 and continued to lead India in limited-overs cricket until January 2017, after which Virat Kohli took over.
