Jenni Hermoso left out of Spain's squad for Women's European Championship

Spain's squad for the Women's European Championship does not include Jenni Hermoso, the player who was kissed without her consent by the former president of the Spanish football federation in the awards ceremony of the 2023 World Cup.
The kiss led to a guilty verdict for sexual assault for Luis Rubiales earlier this year.
Spain stars Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati were among the 25 players called up by coach Montse Tome on Tuesday ahead of the tournament in Switzerland.
The training camp will begin next Thursday in Spain, with players from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, who participated in the final of the Copa de la Reina on Saturday, due to report on Sunday.
The team will play a friendly against Japan near Madrid on June 27, and two days later will travel to Switzerland ahead of its Euro debut against Portugal on July 3. The final roster will be 23 players.

The other nations in Spain's Euro 2025 group are Italy and Belgium.
Hermoso, who plays for Mexican club Tigres, has not been called up for national duty since friendlies against Italy and Canada last October. She had played in the Olympic tournament in Paris, when Spain finished fourth.
Hermoso, the all-time leading scorer for Spain's national team with 57 goals in 123 matches, was left out of the squad right after the scandal broke, when Tome said she was protecting the player. Hermoso was back with the squad after that, but the coach had said after the Olympics that a new cycle was beginning in the national team.
In addition to winning the World Cup in 2023, Spain also won last year's Nations League title.
In February, a Spanish court ruled that Rubiales had sexually abused Hermoso when he kissed her without consent. Spain's National Court ordered Rubiales to pay more than 10,000 euros ($10,400 then) in fines and prohibited him from getting within 200 meters of Hermoso or communicating with her for a year.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Barcelona's Lamine Yamal to Al Nassr's Cristiano Ronaldo - 5 biggest names to miss out

The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 is just two night away from kick-off in the United States with one billion dollars of prize money on the line. With 32 teams vying for the top prize, the month-long tournament will see some of the best footballing talents showcasing their skills at the top level. However, there are a few big names who will not be lighting up stadiums across the United States once it gets underway this weekend. Let's take a look at five of the top names who won't be in action at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. Despite finishing as the champions of England, Liverpool's Mohamed Salah will not be in action at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 because of the English club's absence at the global event. At the English Premier League 2024-25, Salah broke the tournament record with 29 goals and 18 assists. The Egyptian winger was recently seen sunbathing by the beach, the photo of which he posted on Instagram. One of the teen sensations at the moment, Lamile Yamal will not be seen at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 due to Barcelona's absence in the tournament just like Liverpool. The 17-year-old winger has been in sensational form for his club this season and is one of the candidates to win the Ballon d'Or. Yamal's thrilling dribbling and penchant for the spectacular make him one of the biggest draws in world football. Fans around the world will be miss out on a Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi face-off at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 after Al Nassr failed to qualify for the global event. The 40-year-old Portuguese striker and a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, Ronaldo recently lifted the UEFA Nations League with Portugal last weekend. Champions League semi-finalists Arsenal are another team to miss out and after finishing the season trophyless, the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 would have been a chance to win some silverware. England international Bukayo Saka's only club trophy, excluding the FA Community Shield, was an FA Cup win with Arsenal in 2020. Mikel Arteta's side showed this season they have improved to the point where they are in contention for major honours, including knocking out Real Madrid in the Champions League, but came up just short. Brazilian icon Neymar struggled with injury at Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia and returned to Santos in January 2025, hoping to get fit and firing ahead of next summer's FIFA World Cup. The 33-year-old forward, despite fading with age, is still one of the biggest names in the game and his absence is also a blow in a commercial sense.

LA sports celebrities anticipate World Cup's arrival, hope political climate has cooled by then

LOS ANGELES — When the 2026 World Cup begins across North America one year from this week, sports figures from across Los Angeles are hoping the global soccer community will find the U.S. both inspiring and welcoming. The Fox network marked the one-year milestone Wednesday night with a big party at its studio lot in Century City. Attendees included everyone from 'Ted Lasso' star Jason Sudeikis to luminaries from every corner of the sports world in the nation's second-largest metropolitan area, including Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss and Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh. 'I remember when the World Cup was here in the '90s, and then obviously what our American women's team did to win the World Cup ,' Harbaugh said. 'So yeah, I love sports, I love competition, and I think it's going to be incredible for our state, our city, our country. The vibe is going to be incredible to just have everybody here. I'm looking for another explosion of soccer — football — in America.' The attendees all expressed excitement about the return of the world's premier soccer tournament to the U.S. while acknowledging the uncertainty of whether the nation's fraught political climate could present significant challenges to the teams, the World Cup organizers and even the network that will broadcast the tournament domestically. 'I'm hoping this game can bring people together,' said former LA Galaxy midfielder Cobi Jones, a three-time World Cup veteran and the U.S. men's career leader in appearances. 'That's what we really want. We're talking about the travel bans and all that, I'm hoping that FIFA can work together with our government to find a way that everyone can be here, everyone can enjoy this sport, because it's a cultural event that's happening here in a year. I expect everyone from around the world to be able to come here and enjoy it.' Los Angeles is in the midst of several days of protests against intensified immigration raids across the nation that could cause international fans to wonder whether they can travel to the tournament safely. President Donald Trump's latest expansive travel ban has raised questions about whether some soccer fans will be able to visit at all. 'I think it will get figured out,' Harbaugh said. 'To quote the late, great Tom Petty, most things I worry about don't end up happening anyway.' Jones also preached caution for U.S. fans already fretting about the dismal state of their national team. Coach Mauricio Pochettino's squad is on its first four-game losing streak since 2007 after getting thrashed 4-0 by Switzerland on Tuesday in its final tune-up for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. 'We don't panic right now,' Jones said. 'Talk to me when we're a month out. I've seen from experience that with a year out from the World Cup, the team is going to completely change . So for me, it's all about a general sense of whether they can come together as a team, because it's not about the individuals. We've seen it so many times.' soccer: /soccer

He also pointed out how the constant change in leadership was hurting the system. Bhutia raised questions about the ongoing I-League championship issue between Inter Kashi and Churchill Brothers. 'It's very painful to see… we are definitely struggling now to even qualify for the Asia Cup, which we've been qualifying for regularly. Countries like Uzbekistan, Indonesia and Jordan have qualified for the World Cup, and we are still struggling for the Asia Cup. Very unfortunate,' Bhutia told PTI. Three General Secretaries in two-and-a-half years — the entire structure, the system will have to be changed. Controversy after controversy, corruption charge… even after months now we don't know who the I-League winner is,' he said. More from Football The former striker also criticised the AIFF for letting Manolo Marquez coach both FC Goa and the Indian national team at the same time. He claimed that Marquez was appointed without the approval of the Technical Committee. Bhutia was also not happy about the decision to bring Sunil Chhetri out of international retirement. 'It was nice of him to come out of retirement, but it was a completely bad decision. Manolo should not have requested, and now we hear the Federation pushed for it. But what's changed? There is nothing happening at the grassroots. It's all negative news off the field, and that reflects on the national team's performance,' he added. India are still alive in the competition but have a very slim chance of making it to the next round.
