April FCA: Power Division seeks Rs1.27/unit positive adjustment
ISLAMABAD: Power Division has sought a positive adjustment of Rs 1.27 per unit in electricity tariffs for April 2025 to recover Rs 13 billion under the monthly Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) mechanism for consumers of Distribution Companies (Discos).
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) will hold a public hearing on CPPA-G's request on May 29, 2025.
According to data submitted to Nepra, total electricity generation in April 2025 stood at 10,513 GWh— an increase of 22.9 percent compared to 8,639 GWh in April 2024. The overall basket price of electricity during April 2025 was Rs 9.9197 per unit, with the total cost of generation recorded at Rs 104.288 billion.
March FCA: KE seeks Rs5.02 interim negative adjustment
According to data submitted to Nepra, in April 2025, hydel generation recorded an increase of 11.4 per cent to 2,306 GWh in April 2025 as compared to 2070 Gwh in April 2024.
Power generation from local coal-fired power plants was 1,525 GWh in April 2025 which was 14.51 percent of total generation at a price of Rs 11.2115 per unit against 881 GWh in April 2024 price of which was Rs 15.2284 per unit. It shows an increase of 73 per cent in local coal generation.
Generation of 1,054 GWh was generated from imported coal at Rs 16.6062 per unit (10.02 percent) against only 21 GWh in April 2024 at a price Rs 22.8405 per unit Generation from RFO was 83 Gwh at Rs 28.7679 per unit.
Electricity generation from gas-based power plants was 842 GWh (8.01 percent) at Rs 11.8166 per unit against 975 Gwh in April 2024 at a price of Rs 13.2535 per unit. Generation from RLNG was 2,157 GWh (20.52 percent of total generation) at Rs 24.2632 per unit.
Electricity generation from nuclear sources was 1,882 GWh at Rs 2.1038 per unit (17.91 percent of total generation) against 2,043 GWh in April 2024 showing a decrease of 7.9 per cent and electricity imported from Iran was 32 GWh at Rs 25.3465 per unit.
Power generation from baggasse recorded 37 GWh at a price calculated at Rs 5.9822 per unit. The energy generated from wind was recorded at 478 GWh, 4.55 percent of total generation and solar at 115 GWh, 1.10 percent of total generation in April 2025.
The total energy generated was 10, 513 GWh, against 8,639 GWh in April 2024, showing an increase of 22.9 per cent at a basket price of Rs 9.9197 per unit. The total cost of energy was Rs 104.288 billion. However, with proposed previous negative adjustment of Rs 11.397 billion and sale of electricity IPPs at (negative Rs 1.648 billion) net electricity delivered to Discos in April 2025 was 10,196 GWh at a rate of Rs 8.9488 per unit, total price of which was Rs 91.243 billion.
Since in April 2025, net delivered electricity was 10,196 GWh against 8,375 GWh in corresponding month of 2024, showing a growth of 21.7 percent.
CPPA-G argued that since reference fuel charges for April 2025 were Rs 7.6803 per unit while actual fuel charges were Rs 8.9488 per unit; hence, positive adjustment of Rs 1.2685 per unit be granted.

UK to end ban on retail investors buying crypto exchange-traded notes
LONDON: Britain's financial regulator is to remove a ban on consumers buying crypto exchange-traded notes (ETNs), ditching its previous position of wanting to keep them out of the hands of retail investors. The Financial Conduct Authority said on Friday that allowing retail investors to buy ETNs would support growth and competitiveness, in the latest sign that the UK is shifting its approach to crypto as the government seeks to grow the economy and support a digital assets industry. Last year the FCA had approved the launch of crypto ETNs for professional traders but banned retail investors from access, calling the products 'ill-suited' because of 'the harm they pose'. 'We want to rebalance our approach to risk and lifting the ban would allow people to make the choice on whether such a high-risk investment is right for them given they could lose all their money,' David Geale, executive director of payments and digital assets at the FCA, said in a statement on Friday. The proposal will now go out for consultation. Nepra allows relief for Karachi, raises tariff for the rest
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Thursday issued two separate notifications, reducing the power tariff by Rs2.99 per unit for the consumers in Karachi, while increasing the rate by Rs0.93 per unit for the rest of the country. The changes in the tariff had been done on account of fuel adjustment for the month of March in case of Karachi and for the month of April for other parts of the country. In any case, the new changes would be reflected in the current month's electricity bills. According to one notification pertaining to the tariff of the K-Electric, the authority "decided to allow a negative FCA of Rs2.9898/kWh (negative Rs4.045 billion) for March 2025, to be passed on to the consumers in the billing month of June 2025". Nepra said the negative FCA would apply to "all the consumer categories except lifeline consumers, domestic protected consumers, Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) and prepaid electricity consumers of all categories who opted for pre-paid tariff". It said that the KE would reflect the fuel charges adjustment in respect of March in the billing month of June. "The adjustment would be shown separately in the consumers' bills on the basis of units billed to the consumers in the respective month to which the adjustment pertains," it added. According to a separate notification, the authority "has reviewed and assessed a National Average Uniform increase of Rs0.9306/kWh in the applicable tariff for Discos [Distribution Companies] on account of variations in the fuel charges for April". The notification added that the FCA should apply to all the consumer categories except lifeline consumers, protected consumers, EVCS and pre-paid electricity consumers of all categories who opted for prepaid tariffs. Punjab takes unprecedented steps for environmental improvement: CM
LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif said the Punjab's first climate policy, Climate Resilient Punjab Vision and Action Plan, has been implemented. A special environmental endowment fund worth Rs 15 billion has been established for environment-friendly startups and businesses. The Punjab province has attained the honour of establishing Pakistan's first Environmental Protection Force (EPF) for environmental protection. The chief minister in her message on World Environment Day, said that Punjab's environmental commitment has entirely changed in a span of one year. Punjab has taken unprecedented steps for environmental improvement in one year. A plastic management cell has been established for environmental protection, which is ensuring a complete ban on single-use plastic. She revealed that for the first time in Punjab, online registration of plastic manufacturers and sellers has been started. For the first time, Emission Testing Certification of vehicles according to international standards has been launched to combat smog hazards. Millions of vehicles have been registered under Emission Testing Certification in Punjab, she said. She apprised that 50 air quality monitoring stations have been installed across the province to monitor the environmental situation. She highlighted that thousands of youths are actively working in cities and villages under the Climate Leadership and Development Internship Program to create awareness among the public about the elimination of environmental pollution. She disclosed that a GIS squad has been established to ensure environmental protection with the help of artificial intelligence. The CM outlined, 'Four fuel testing labs have been established to check the quality of petrol to prevent smog. Sprinkler systems are being installed on buildings under construction to prevent dust. For the first time, 15 water quality monitoring stations are being established to check the quality of water on rivers and rain water drains. Environmental benefits are being achieved through tree plantation, recycling and e-bikes through the Chief Minister Green Credit Programme.' She emphasised, 'The first 'Strategic Cell' has been established in the Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Change to create environmental awareness and consciousness among the public. EPA has declared Punjab as the first ESO certified agency in Pakistan owning to successful measures being taken for environmental protection. The first dedicated Helpline '1317' has been established for public feedback regarding environmental protection. To prevent smog, emission control systems are being installed in more than 2000 industrial units and e-mapping of all units is being carried out. For the first time in Punjab, all brick kilns have been shifted to zigzag technology.' She highlighted, 'In order to convert the environmental pledge into practical action, environmental divisional offices have been established in five divisions and four new divisional offices are being established. For the first time in Punjab, environmental social safeguard training is being organized in the government departments. A 'Green Punjab app' has also been established for the convenience of the public. The electric bus service has been launched in Lahore, 1100 more electric buses will be provided in all divisions.
