Youth Hub Christchurch Wins Best Health Project At New Zealand Commercial Project Awards
Press Release – Youth Hub Christchurch
Chair of the Youth Hub Trust Dame Sue Bagshaw says shes thrilled the Hub is getting national recognition.
Youth Hub Christchurch won both National Category and Gold Awards in the Altus Window Systems Health Project Award category at the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards.
Main building contractor Naylor Love Canterbury entered the awards with project partners Field Studio of Architecture and Urbanism (Architect/Designer) and One Four (Project Manager).
The Judges' comments describe the building as an extraordinary achievement towards social change.
'Stage one of the development brought together offices, consultation rooms, recreational areas, and supported housing for vulnerable youth. Designed with input from a group of young people, the space upholds cultural relevance, safety, and accessibility. From a construction standpoint, this was a highly challenging project. The team expertly navigated a dense urban site with significant geotechnical constraints, and a tight budget. The judges were particularly impressed with the collaboration demonstrated by the Youth Hub Trust, local community, stakeholders, and the design and construction teams.'
Chair of the Youth Hub Trust Dame Sue Bagshaw says she's thrilled the Hub is getting national recognition.
'The Hub is the first of its kind in New Zealand and our hope is that similar Hubs will emerge in other key centres as a way of transforming youth mental health and wellbeing.'
Regional Director of Naylor Love Canterbury Graeme Earl says they're exceptionally pleased with the result.
'Our team put their hearts into building an exceptional facility for the Youth Hub Trust and rangatahi in Ōtautahi Christchurch, setting a standard that was echoed by a special team of consultants, subcontractors and suppliers. We're thrilled the exceptional care and craftsmanship that has gone into the building has been recognised.'

Vitality partners with FICO to offer personalised digital care
Vitality has partnered with FICO to provide personalised digital healthcare journeys for its one million members. The collaboration sees the implementation of the Vitality Care Hub, which is built on FICO Platform and aims to streamline and personalise the process of accessing healthcare services for members, from GP referrals to physiotherapy and mental health support. The Care Hub enables digital claims submission and management, resulting in a marked shift from telephone to online claims initiation. Vitality reports that fewer than 28% of member claims are now started over the phone, compared to over 90% in 2019. The shift toward a digital-first process has allowed specialist claims teams to dedicate more time to complex cases requiring personal support. The insurer has integrated a suite of FICO tools to facilitate data-driven decisions using real-time insights. This has reduced the need for manual intervention by agents, improved the efficiency of claims processing, and lowered operational costs. By minimising the risk of human error, Vitality can handle a higher volume of complex claims such as chemotherapy treatments, while also supporting scalability as claim volumes rise. Annabel Simmons, Head of Healthcare Programs at Vitality, explained the rationale behind the move: "At Vitality we understand that no two patients are the same. Some members prefer a no-nonsense, straightforward, and self-managed approach to healthcare, while others require more handholding and empathy. We wanted to offer personalised healthcare journeys that cater to these individual preferences." Simmons added, "Upgrading our system wasn't just about moving to the cloud — it was about unlocking the potential for growth by allowing our teams to focus on what they do best: providing excellent healthcare services and improving patient outcomes. We realised we were limiting our possibilities by staying with our old system. Our upgrade with FICO is already paying for itself and will continue to drive value for years to come." The adoption of a cloud-based microservices architecture, which integrates across services such as life insurance and member reward schemes, allows Vitality to offer tailored journeys for members. The system also provides traceability of decisions and consistency in outcomes. Care Hub is intended to complement the work of Vitality's specialist claims teams by enabling fast digital pathways for customers whose needs are more routine, while reserving human resources for complex cases. The insurer states this approach manages demand efficiently, helping to maintain customer satisfaction and drive operational savings that can be reinvested into key services. Vitality is also using FICO Business Outcome Simulator to test and preview the likely outcomes of rule changes in real time. This enables the business to understand potential impacts before changes are implemented, both at the operational level and for members. Nikhil Behl, President, Software at FICO, commented on the project: "The collaboration between FICO and Vitality has enabled the kind of personalised digital-first approach that is transforming healthcare services. By focusing on personalisation, automation, and operational efficiency, Vitality is building a future-proof system that meets the diverse needs of its members while driving sustainable growth." FICO Platform provides open architecture and integrated capabilities for organising data, generating insights, and executing operational actions. FICO was recently recognised as a Leader in the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Decision Intelligence Platforms 2024 Vendor Assessment.

Building projects nationally recognised
Queenstown building companies have this week been recognised on the national stage for local projects. Cook Brothers Construction, Naylor Love Central Otago and Lakes Building Co have all been honoured at the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards, which recognise the contribution of entire project teams. Cook Brothers won the value award ($10million to $25m), the tourism and leisure project award and picked up a gold award — recognising projects which receive a judging score between 900 and 1000 points — for Arrowtown's Ayrburn hospitality precinct, specifically the meticulous restoration of the Woolshed, Manure Room and Dairy. Owned by Winton, project partners were Aquaheat, ENGCO, Qube Consultants Ltd and SA Studios. The entry says the project balanced heritage with modern craftsmanship, utilising original schist and river stones and timber to preserve the site, while also significantly reducing its carbon footprint. Cook Brothers also picked up silver in the civic category for the Salvation Army's new building at Remarkables Park, on which it worked with 1Point618, Consort QS, Powell Fenwick Consultants and TSA Riley. Naylor Love won a gold award in the heritage and restoration category for its Speight's Ale House rebuild, which included DGSE, Ignite Architects, Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers, Origin Consultants, Wainwright & Hickey and Heritage Stonework. The iconic building's restoration followed a devastating fire in 2023 — completed last September, the project preserved its architectural heritage, while bringing it in line with modern building codes. The building company also won two gold awards in the commercial category, one of which was for an office complex at 22 Wiltshire St, Arrowtown, which it worked on with Cosgroves, Hadley Consultants, Lewis Bradford, Origin Heritage Architects, Rubix and SB Design. Naylor Love's other gold award in that category was for Invercargill's HWR Tower. Lakes Building Co won a silver award in the tourism and leisure category for Arthurs Point's Cargo Brew Hall, which it worked on in conjunction with Yoke.
