BEIJING: It's dangling from Hermès bags in Paris. It's selling out in seconds in Tokyo. In Bangkok, it's now a cultural ambassador — officially endorsed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Labubu, a snaggle-toothed, wild-eyed forest creature from Chinese toy brand Pop Mart, has gone from underground oddity to global fashion icon.
In New York, fans are camping outside Pop Mart stores like they were heading to a concert. In London, collectors are clashing over the last blind box. And in Beijing, a human-sized Labubu recently fetched US$150,000 at an auction. The brand's latest feat? A collaboration with Louis Vuitton — the plush gremlin turned luxury icon.
All this for a toy with nine fangs, upright ears, bulging eyes, and a grin that teeters between creepy and charming. Half-imp, half-elf, Labubu looks like it crawled out of a fever dream. And yet, it's everywhere.
No one knows exactly why.
Maybe it's the low-odds, high-stakes thrill of the blind box — that dopamine hit of maybe. Maybe it's the "ugly-cute" aesthetic that Gen Z has fully embraced. Or maybe, in an era of algorithms and sameness, Labubu feels like a "rebellion": a weirdo you can hold in your hand.
What's clear is this: Labubu isn't just a toy. It's a statement. A personality. A plush projection of a generation that craves individuality, contradiction, and something that feels imperfectly real.
And it's making waves far beyond China.
In April, Pop Mart's app became the No. 1 shopping app on the US App Store — the first Chinese toy brand ever to top the chart. Pop Mart's founder, Wang Ning, is now the richest man in Henan province, and his company is rewriting the playbook on cultural exports — one fang at a time.
Labubu's rise comes at a time when headlines are filled with tension: trade wars, tech bans, geopolitical friction. Chinese brands face growing skepticism abroad. But somehow, this eccentric yet endearing toy has slipped through the cracks — or rather, danced through them — offering something both unmistakably Chinese and universally appealing.
Because the truth is, young people everywhere — in Shanghai, Stockholm, or São Paulo — share something simple: a desire for joy, surprise and self-expression. Labubu is just strange enough, just expressive enough, to tap into that.
Labubu isn't saving the world. But it's reminding us that globalisation isn't dead — it's just gotten a lot weirder. And a lot cuter. - China Daily/ANN

Miley Cyrus admits she hid thousands of dollars in drugs from accountant

Miley Cyrus is currently riding the wave of her May 30 album release, 'Something Beautiful'. Photo: AP Miley Cyrus is getting candid about her past drug use, including a time when she says she hid tens of thousands of dollars worth of drug purchases from her accountant. The Grammy-winning Flowers singer, 32, confirmed that 'drugs were the biggest cost' of her recording her 2015 self-funded album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz . 'To hide those from my accountant, we called them 'vintage clothes,'' she revealed on a recent episode of The Ringer's Every Single Album podcast. 'So she would get these checks for thousands of dollars worth of vintage clothes.' Eventually, her accountant began to wonder where those clothes actually were. 'Every time she saw me, she'd be like, 'Where's that, like, US$15,000 (RM63,537.17) original John Lennon T-shirt that you bought?'' Cyrus recalled. 'I was like, 'Oh, it's upstairs. … We just really want to protect it. It's really delicate.'' Cyrus admitted to buying 'a lot of 'vintage clothes' that year,' saying she's grateful she 'survived' that period of her life. 'I would definitely not encourage anyone else to go this hard, but the fact that I got through it, I'm very glad I got to do it,' she said. The Disney Channel alum has since been vocal about getting sober – first from marijuana in 2017 and then alcohol three years later. She credits sobriety with having 'changed (her) entire life.' Cyrus is currently riding the wave of her May 30 album release, Something Beautiful . This week at the Tribeca Festival, Cyrus debuted the accompanying visual album. – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service

Soccer-'Ted Lasso' stars tell Los Angeles to surrender to the World Cup vibe

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -The creators and stars of award-winning comedy series "Ted Lasso" were among those expressing hope that the World Cup would bring people together at an event in Los Angeles on Wednesday marking the one-year countdown to the tournament. Los Angeles will be one of the main host cities for the soccer showpiece in North America, welcoming eight matches including the United States' first match and a quarter-final. Brendan Hunt, a co-creator and actor in the Apple TV+ show about an upstart British football team with a U.S. coach, said Americans should embrace the influx of visitors from around the world. "What America needs to get ready for with this World Cup is something that most Americans instinctively know, but just to make sure for those who don't - there will be many people here who were not born here," Hunt said during an on-stage interview. "And just because they weren't born here, you don't need to be afraid of them." "Platform used," said fellow co-creator Jason Sudeikis, who plays Lasso on the show. Hunt said the tournament would be incredible. "You have to prepare yourself to surrender to a vibe you've never quite seen before because when folks come to these cities to see their teams play, they will take over in a way that is absolutely as benevolent as it is overwhelming," he added. The countdown to the tournament, which the U.S. is co-hosting with Mexico and Canada, comes on the heels of U.S. President Donald Trump's directive banning citizens from 12 countries from entering the U.S., though athletes are exempt. The Trump administration has also said it will deploy 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles to help protect federal property and personnel during the ongoing protests in the city. The protests broke out in response to a series of immigration raids in a city with a large immigrant population. Cobi Jones, who played for the U.S. in three World Cups, said he hoped the event would be a unifying one. "This is the game we all love and I'm hoping it can bring people together," he told Reuters on the red carpet of the event at Fox Studio Lot in Los Angeles. "When we're talking about the travel bans, I'm hoping that FIFA can work together with our government to find a way that everyone can be here and everyone can enjoy this sport because it's a cultural event that's happening here in a year." FIFA President Gianni Infantino said last month after meeting with U.S. President Trump he was confident visitors would be welcomed for the World Cup as well as the Club World Cup, which runs from June 14 to July 13 and also has matches in Los Angeles. Chinese Woman Arrested After Attempting To Break Into BTS' Jungkook's Home

It's only been a day since BTS (방탄소년단) member Jungkook (정국) returned from his military service. However, there has already been a serious invasion of his privacy. Earlier today, news outlets reported that a woman had allegedly attempted to break into the idol's home. According to news reports, Yongsan Police officers have arrested a Chinese woman in her 30s for attempting to trespass on Jungkook's residence in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. The incident occurred on the night of 11th June 2025 (Wednesday), at around 11:20pm. Police were called to the scene after neighbours caught the woman pressing the electronic keylock on the door, likely attempting to enter the premises. It's unknown whether Jungkook was at the residence during the incident. However, after her arrest, the woman revealed she came to Korea to see Jungkook following his army discharge. The police are investigating the specific circumstances of the incident. Jungkook's label, HYBE, has commented on the situation but said, 'It's difficult to provide detailed information on the situation as the police are currently investigating the situation.' Meanwhile, ARMYs online have shared their reaction to the news, mostly expressing shock over the situation. Many criticised the woman's action, hoping she'd receive appropriate punishment for attempted trespassing. Others lamented the extreme situation with BTS' stalkers, or sasaengs, urging HYBE to protect their artists. Some also said that the singer has only returned from the military for a day, but already has to deal with stalkers. This case isn't the only issue surrounding BTS' recent military discharge. After RM (알앰), V (뷔), Jimin (지민) and Jungkook completed their military service, roughly 1,500 ARMYs flocked to the HYBE building in Seoul to celebrate the occasion. However, the move sparked a backlash as the large crowd could cause traffic disruptions and possible accidents. In response, Jimin shared a post on the Weverse platform, asking the fans not to gather near the building. While we understand the fans' wishes to meet the BTS members, we hope they can respect the idols' wishes not to gather in front of the HYBE building. As for the break-in case, we hope the perpetrator will receive the appropriate punishment. What are your thoughts on this?
