Indiana DNR hiring for state park positions
FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking to hire more people as public swim spots open Memorial Day weekend.
The Indiana DNR is looking to hire and certify lifeguards for multiple state parks across Indiana. The current parks looking for lifeguards are:
the beach at Indiana Dunes State Park
pool at Brown County State Park
pool at Cagles Mill Lake (Lieber State Recreation Area)
pool at Clifty Falls State Park
pool at McCormick's Creek State Park
aquatic center at O'Bannon Woods State Park
aquatic center at Prophetstown State Park
pool at Shakamak State Park
pool at Spring Mill State Park
pool at Turkey Run State Park
pool at Versailles State Park
All the pools listed above will be open Saturday through Monday, May 24-26, Saturday and Sunday May 31- June 1, and then daily June 7- Aug 1. The beach at the Indiana Dunes State Park will follow the same schedule. Positions are open to anyone 15 or older. If interested, contact the closest park near you listed above to see when a certification course is available. All other beaches will be open for swimming on Memorial Day weekend and will remain open through Labor Day weekend. Those beaches are:

Harden (Raccoon SRA), • Chain O'Lakes State Park, • Deam Lake SRA, • Ferdinand State Forest,• Hardy Lake,• Mississinewa Lake, • Monroe Lake, • Ouabache State Park,• Patoka Lake, • Pokagon State Park, • Potato Creek State Park, • Salamonie Lake, • Starve Hollow SRA, • Summit Lake State Park.
The Beach at Lincoln State Park will close after the 4th of July weekend due to lake levels being down for dam maintenance. The aquatic center at Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park and the pools at Clifty Inn, Potawatomi Inn, and Turkey Run Inn will continue to welcome guests. Beginning August 1, the pools and beach at Indiana Dunes State Park will likely return to weekends only.

May 2025: A look back at last month's weather
Your StormTracker 59 team goes back into the weather files to highlight some of the most impactful weather of the month for May 2025: Warmest High Temperature: 81 degrees (May 1st) Coolest High Temperature: 54 degrees (May 26th) Coolest Low Temperature: 36 degrees (May 10th) Warmest Low Temperature: 61 degrees (May 16th) Overall, for the month of May, we were BELOW average. That's not so surprising considering how cold Memorial Day was! Our average May temperature is 61.3 degrees, and we ended up at 59.6 degrees for the month, which is 1.7 degrees below normal. May began on a warm note. The warmest temperature of the month occurred on May 1st at 81 degrees! However, eventually the colder weather set in. Outside of May 29th, the last ten days featured temperatures that were a good bit below normal and that was enough to sway the month to the below normal side. Of particular interest was the stretch from Friday, May 25th to Tuesday, May 27th, where three out of five days failed to see highs reach 60 degrees! In fact, we did not reach 70 degrees for a week straight from the 22nd to the 28th. Wettest Day: 0.73″ (May 13th) Number of Days with Measurable Rainfall: 18 out of 31 days May provided beneficial rains to many parts of the region that were flirting with drought at the beginning of spring. Most towns in May experienced above average rainfall, with Beckley coming in at about a half inch above normal at just over five inches. A lot of this rain came down quickly, however, which was not as beneficial to the water table. However, overall conditions related to drought did improve during the month of May. Memorial Day was one of the coolest holidays in recent memory! High temperatures were stuck in the 50s for most of the region. Beckley only reached 54 degrees officially! We should be in the low to mid 70s. The clouds, occasional sprinkles and overall gloom did not make for good boating or swimming weather to say the least. Air Quality Advisory extended for most of Wisconsin as wildfire smoke from Canada remains
(WFRV) – As smoke and haze continue to linger from wildfires in Canada, the Wisconsin DNR has extended the Air Quality Advisory another day for most of Wisconsin. The advisory extension now lasts until Friday, June 6, at 12 p.m., as the DNR's Air Quality Index remains in the Orange, or 'unhealthy for sensitive groups.' Affected counties include Brown, Door, Kenosha, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marinette, Milwaukee, Oconto, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha. Celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Wisconsin State Park System during June's Free Fun Weekend Officials recommend that anyone who falls into the 'sensitive groups' to make outdoor activities shorter and less intense, while including more breaks. It is also recommended to watch out for symptoms, including excess coughing or shortness of breath. Milwaukee currently has the second worst air quality in the US, The New York Times says
Milwaukee is again experiencing some of the worst air quality in the U.S. from Canadian wildfire smoke on June 5, according to The New York Times. The city had the worst air quality in the country around noon EST on June 4, with an air quality index of 153, the Times reported. While Chicago has since topped the Times' list with an AQI of 161, Milwaukee claims the second spot. As of 11 a.m. EST on June 5, city has an air quality index of 139, the Times reported. Aurora, Colorado is experiencing the same index as Milwaukee. This AQI is considered "unhealthy for sensitive groups," according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's standards. For indexes in this range, members of sensitive groups could experience negative health effects. The general population is "less likely" to be affected, according to As a result, an air quality advisory from Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has been extended until noon on June 6, Air Management Outreach Coordinator Craig Czarnecki confirmed to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Czarnecki noted the scope of the advisory will be reduced and include the following counties in the eastern portion of the state: Brown, Door, Kenosha, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marinette, Milwaukee, Oconto, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha. The AQI for these areas will range from "moderate" to "unhealthy for sensitive groups," he said, adding air quality throughout "much of the rest of the state" has improved to the "moderate" level.
