Jeff Bezos' Project Kuiper eyes India's satellite internet market after Musk's Starlink
New Delhi: Jeff Bezos-led
Project Kuiper
may enter India's lucrative
satellite internet
market hot on the heels of
Elon Musk
's
Starlink
, having recently approached the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for swift approval of its application.
Like Starlink, Kuiper plans to have massive
satcom
capacity in India. The Amazon-backed major plans to set up 10 gateways and two points of presence in Mumbai and Chennai, multiple people aware of the details told ET.
'The company wrote to DoT recently, requesting to expedite issuance of a letter of intent (LoI) for a satcom (Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite) permit,' one of the persons said.
The letter was written before the DoT last week issued an LoI to Starlink, he added.
Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb and Reliance Jio-SES JV have already got the Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) permit.
Kuiper-Starlink to Generate Majority of India Capacity
The two have also got clearances from space regulator Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe).
Apple's satcom partner Globalstar has also applied to IN-SPACe for clearances to offer services in India.
'Amazon applied to DoT nearly two years back and, as the company has commenced commercial launch of satellites, it wants to secure all approvals before it starts offering commercial services later this year,' a second person cited above said.
Last month, Kuiper had deployed 27 satellites in space and more launches are planned in coming months. It plans to have a low earth orbit (LEO) constellation of over 3,200 satellites with most of them likely to be deployed by February-March next year.
The timelines may, however, vary as the first scheduled commercial launch got delayed by a few months, according to experts.
An ET query to
Amazon
regarding its request for expeditious approval remained unanswered at press time Wednesday.
Experts said that capacities generated by Kuiper and Starlink—which already has over 7,000 LEO satellites in space—would by far be the highest among competitors. In contrast, Eutelsat OneWeb has 648 LEO satellites and the Jio-SES combine will have around 11 medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites.
Starlink plans to have three gateways in India compared to Kuiper's 10, while Eutelsat-OneWeb and Jio-SES have two gateways each.
So, the majority of capacity that can be generated and used in India will come from the two US majors.
Currently, non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellites in India have a total bandwidth capacity of about 70 gigabits per second (Gbps) while that of geostationary orbit (GSO) satellites is lower at about 58 Gbps. But once the LEO constellations are operational, the capacity will skyrocket to a few terabytes.
In terms of distance from earth, Kuiper's satellites are placed at 450 kilometres above earth, slightly lower than Starlink's altitude of about 550 km. OneWeb satellites are at greater distances than Starlink, at about 1,200 km in the LEO orbit while Jio-SES operates in MEO orbit at over 8,000 km.
Satellites, which are near the earth orbit, can offer better speeds but the coverage is lower, so more numbers need to be put up in space.
Kuiper plans to offer broadband speeds ranging from 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) through various plans across a variety of consumers, including retail, enterprise, etc. The pricing details are to be announced later.
Besides the GMPCS and space regulator's approval, companies need spectrum to be allotted for starting commercial services in India.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) recently recommended administrative allocation of satcom spectrum for a fee pegged at 4% of the adjusted gross revenue (AGR). Once the Union cabinet approves the proposal, spectrum will be allocated to companies for commercial launch of satellite internet services.
India's space economy is reckoned to have a potential to touch $44 billion by 2033, boosting its global share to 8% from 2% currently, as per IN-SPACe.
Both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have already partnered Starlink to sell its equipment and services at their outlets, besides exploring other means of cooperation. Starlink is exploring talks with other satcom companies for potential tie-ups, ET had reported recently.

Tata Group needs to fine-tune key aspects of Air India's operations: Praful Patel
Mumbai: Former civil aviation minister Praful Patel has called on the Tata Group to fine-tune key aspects of Air India's operations, a day after the airline's Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft with 242 people onboard crashed shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad. At least 265 people have been confirmed dead as of Friday, including students at a medical college's hostel and others in a residential area near the Ahmedabad airport where the plane went down. 'After three-and-a-half years of the takeover of Air India by the Tatas, the management needs to fine-tune various aspects of running a world-class airline, including maintenance,' Patel told reporters at the Nationalist Congress Party's office in Mumbai on Friday. The 68-year-old was the civil aviation minister in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government when Boeing introduced the Dreamliners in 2011. Asked about India's proficiency in maintaining and repairing aircraft, Patel expressed concern over the 'under-utilisation' of domestic facilities. Before the Tata takeover in 2022, most of Air India's planes were maintained by Air India Engineering Services Limited, the country's largest aircraft maintenance company, which is government-owned. However, many planes are now being managed by other agencies, he said. 'We have a world-class set-up, but it is surprising why some planes of Air India are sent outside the country for maintenance. Air India Engineering Services Limited has always maintained Air India for a long time, and their services should be utilised. It is surprising that aircraft are sent outside. Boeing's maintenance and repair facility at Nagpur has a good track record. However, the facility has been underutilised,' he added. Terming the accident a temporary setback, Patel said India's aviation sector remains largely well-managed. 'We have potential for growth and a need for more aircraft, looking at the size of our country. Any accident has a temporary setback, but largely, Indian aviation is well managed. SOPs and safety norms are well in place in India's aviation growth,' he said. Thursday's accident is being probed by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which comes under the civil aviation ministry. Patel refused to speculate on the reasons behind the crash and said everyone should wait for the AAIB's report. 'The black box has been recovered. While the data will be retrieved within a few months, it will take a little longer for the government to come out with a report detailing the exact reasons behind the crash,' he said. Patel also played down speculation that a bird hit may have led to the crash. 'Even if one of the two engines had failed, technically, the plane is equipped to take off and travel the full distance. Watching the video, it seems that there was no problem at the time of the takeoff. Otherwise, the pilot would have avoided it,' he said. The NCP leader also called on passengers not to be scared of air travel following the crash. 'India's overall safety standards are well-defined and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation keeps updating these norms in line with international norms,' he said. Meanwhile, Tata Group chairman N Chandrasekaran on Friday described the crash as 'one of the darkest days in Tata Group's history.' In a letter addressed to employees, Chandrasekaran conveyed his grief over the loss of lives, calling the tragedy 'incomprehensible.' 'Words are no consolation right now, but my thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the people who died and were injured in the crash. We are here for them. I want to say that, like you, we want to understand what happened. We don't know right now, but we will,' Chandrasekaran wrote in the letter. With inputs from PTI

Big Tech's acqui-hire strategy heats up as demand for AI talent soars
Live Events Meta's $15 billion investment in Scale AI for a 49% stake is the latest in a series of transactions that large technology companies have made to acquire talent as they seek to get ahead in the AI acquihiring is not just a trend, but a strategic necessity for these companies and is likely to see more traction, as the demand for AI talents will continue to increase, say the last two years, large technology players have been acquiring AI startups for their technology teams. Microsoft paid $650 million in a licensing deal to Inflection AI, whose cofounder Mustafa Suleyman is now heading Microsoft AI. In a similar licensing deal, Amazon hired AI startup Adept cofounder David Luan and others who joined Amazon's AGI the home front in India, well-funded AI startups Krutrim and Sarvam acquired semiconductor startup Bodhi Computing and legal platform Samta Law, respectively, to enter new are a couple of reasons for this. 'We're at an inflection point where foundational AI talent is in such short supply and high demand that companies are willing to buy entire teams to accelerate their AI roadmap,' said Sachin Arora, partner and leader – data & analytics, agents and cloud at PwC Meta for instance. Following the $15 billion investment, Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang will report to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and will lead the social media giant's new AI lab focused on pointed out that unlike in the software-as-a-service sector, where acquihires were often about engineering execution, in AI, it's about vision, research and IP. "You're acquiring not just builders but boundary-pushers, people who define what's next,' he a few years ago, when acquisitions were a norm, regulatory scrutiny has increased in recent times. EY India technology consulting partner Hari Balaji said established tech giants are seeing escalating regulatory scrutiny prompting them to grow through reverse acquihires without triggering anti-trust addition to this, acquihires are also an avenue for companies to enter highly competitive sectors and acquire new customers.A lot of this is stemming from a small pool of talent that is currently available in AI.A Bengaluru-based investor earlier told ET on the condition of anonymity that beyond accelerating the AI journey, increasing the market share and acquiring new capabilities are the other reasons for M&As and acquihires. 'In our portfolio, some of the startups are evaluating companies that bring key AI capabilities for one of the three reasons mentioned,' he had these are early days in India. 'What we are seeing are small deals or acquihires and not large deals that would attract large enterprises yet, which are a huge value add,' Kae Capital general partner Gaurav Chaturvedi earlier told ET. 'Those are beginning to happen in the US. These will take time to pan out in India.'
