Law enforcement recognized, honored during National Police Week
BEAUFORT, N.C. (WNCT) — This week kicked off National Police Week for 2025. It's a week where people can pay tribute to officers who have sacrificed across the country and also to appreciate local officers.
'We have to do things the right way at the right time, always,' Beaufort Chief of Police Paul Burdette said. 'And there's very little room for error and I'm very honored to be able to be in that supportive role for my officers because they make the hardest decision every morning and every night, and that's to come in to work.'
Chief Burdette said local officers have hard jobs serving their communities and that's why it's especially important during National Police Week to appreciate what they do.
'My phones are always on. If there's a complaint, we need to hear it because it's quality control,' Chief Burdette said. 'But, more often than not, people are calling in to commend my officers because they do the right thing at the right time always and that's critical. And that's what makes them as successful as they are.'
Chief Burdette also said when it comes to the Beaufort Police Department, his officers are well-trained and proud to serve the town.
'It's protecting the future and preserving the past. We have a rich heritage here in Beaufort and we have the quality of service delivery that's expected,' Chief Burdette said. 'And my staff are well-trained and they know how to treat people. I try not to overcomplicate it, but it's really not hard to treat people the right way with dignity and respect. You're going to get the compliance that you need. You're going to get the effort that you need, and you're going to get the results that you're looking for.'
