Why Google Bought a $100 Million Stake in Gentle Monster
Multiple sources have reported thatGooglehas invested approximately $100 million USD for a 4% stake in the fast-growing Korean eyewear labelGentle Monster. The news comes one month after the tech giant revealed partnerships with Gentle Monster andWarby Parkerto develop design-forward smart lenses for its newAndroid XRinitiative.
Google's latest move sends a strong message to competitorMeta, which has ramped up its AI-powered glasses rollout with partnersRay BanandOakley. Meta unveiled its partnership with Ray-Ban in 2023 and has since launched multiple models, including the recentOrion glasses, touted as 'the most advanced pair of augmented reality (AR) glasses ever made.' And just days ago,Oakley and Meta unveiled the HSTN, their first product from a new long-term partnership in 'a new category of Performance AI glasses.'
However, it's not the first time Google has attempted to enter the smart glasses market. In 2012, Google unveiled its now obsolete Google Glass device, equipped with a camera, a small information display, and internet connectivity.More than 10 years later, the growth of augmented reality (AR) technologies and highly advanced AI has paved the way for more user-friendly and convenient wearables. Additionally, hardware advances have allowed new designs to accommodate slimmer profiles and more attractive silhouettes.
In December, Google announced its revamped efforts withAndroid XR, 'a new operating system built for the next generation of computing,' focused on bringing heightened experiences to headsets and glasses.
Fast forward to late May, Gentle Monster took to Instagram to share the news of theirpartnership, saying the collaboration 'represents a pivotal step in the evolution of smart eyewear into essential, lifestyle fashion items.' 'Creativity and sophistication are essential design features for the integration of technology into everyday life,' the brand added.
So, what could Google x Gentle Monster smart glasses look like? Compared to Ray-Ban, Oakley, and fellow Android XR partner Warby Parker, Gentle Monster is the youngest eyewear label, and the most experimental. Founded in Seoul in 2011, the brand has garnered international appeal for its trend-driven silhouettes and collaborations with innovative designer brands likeMaison MargielaandMugler.
A pair of Gentle Monster smart specs could bring big tech's dream of merging its services with fashion's cultural appeal into reality like never before, paving the way for wearable concepts beyond eyewear altogether.
As of the time of writing, an official launch of Gentle Monster and Google's collaboration has not been confirmed. Stay tuned to Hypebeast for the latest fashion and tech industry insights.

Scale AI locked down Big Tech client documents after BI revealed security holes
Scale AI has now locked down project materials for clients like Meta and xAI following a Business Insider report that thousands of sensitive files were stored as Google Docs that were publicly accessible with links. The company — which uses human gig workers to improve Big Tech's latest AI models and is receiving a $14 billion investment from Meta — scrambled to secure its files this week, according to four Scale contractors who asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the matter. That left teams of workers temporarily unable to open training documents. Thousands of Scale AI files previously reviewed by BI that had been public are now private. "What is happening is a knee-jerk reaction to being in the headlines," Stephanie Kurtz, a regional director with cybersecurity firm Trace3, told BI. She said that locking down the documents and inviting the correct users "should have been done in the first place." By Wednesday, teams had resolved many of the document access issues, one worker said. Another said contributors were now being granted individual access to documents. BI first flagged the public Google Docs to Scale AI for a June 13 article about how they showed Google using ChatGPT to improve its AI chatbot. BI also encountered public Scale AI documents during prior reports about how xAI and Meta were training their latest AI models. At least 85 individual Google Docs containing thousands of pages remained up and fully accessible until BI published an article on Tuesday that focused on the security issue this practice created. BI reported that Scale AI had left open thousands of project documents tied to its work with clients, including Google and Meta, allowing anyone with a link to access them. Several documents also contained contact information for numerous Scale AI workers, some of whom were surprised to discover their details were accessible when BI contacted them. Scale AI has routinely used public Google Docs to track work for high-profile customers, as it's an efficient way to share information with its more than 240,000 contractors. BI found that those documents often contain sensitive information about how workers train AI models for Big Tech clients. Multiple AI training documents reviewed by BI were labeled "confidential" and accessible to anyone with the link. After Scale AI's lockdown, one contractor described a "site-wide" problem accessing project materials on Tuesday. Another said that many teams' work had ground to a halt due to the new restrictions, with one even losing access in the middle of a critical presentation. "We are basically chilling out here," the contractor said. Scale AI told BI on Monday that it was conducting a thorough investigation and had disabled any user's ability to publicly share documents from Scale's systems. It reiterated that statement for this article and did not comment further on specific changes it has made to Scale AI's document security. "We take data security seriously," a Scale AI spokesperson said. "We remain committed to robust technical and policy safeguards to protect confidential information and are always working to strengthen our practices." There's no indication that Scale AI had suffered a data breach. Cybersecurity experts told BI that the practice could leave the company vulnerable to hacking. The document lockout was another bit of whiplash for Scale AI contractors, who were affected by Meta's mega-investment and its decision to hire CEO Alexandr Wang, for its new AI superintelligence group. After the deal announcement, Google halted several of its projects with Scale AI. OpenAI and Elon Musk's xAI have also paused projects with Scale, BI previously reported, and one smaller investor said they were selling their remaining stake in the startup. Many contractors discovered that some of their projects had been paused. While Scale AI sent its contractors a memo announcing the Meta investment, many workers said they were left in the dark about clients pausing projects, mostly without prior warning. Meta declined to comment.

CarMax embraces AI to boost sales and efficiency, with focus on 'generative engine optimization'
For the quarter that ended May 31, CarMax reported $7.55 billion in revenue, up 6.1% from the same quarter a year ago. Goochland-based used car giant CarMax Inc. says it is increasingly focused on rolling out AI technology across its operations to boost sales, marketing and efficiencies. On an earnings call last week, CarMax CEO Bill Nash said his company is putting a particular emphasis on 'generative engine optimization,' or how it makes its content and listings easily understood and leveraged by AI-powered search engines. Companies have long focused on search engine optimization, which determines how high up web content appears in search results on sites like Google. 'I think the big new buzzword is GEO instead of SEO,' Nash said. 'That's what it's all about. It's like how do you show up well. It's critical. I think if you're only focused on SEO, you're going to miss the boat.' He said GEO will play a big role in CarMax's future marketing campaigns — including one launching this summer — and he said when it comes to marketing in general, he sees a lot of potential with generative AI. CarMax recently parted ways with Richmond's Martin Agency as its advertising agency of record, opting instead for L.A.-based 72andSunny. CarMax execs also said the company is seeing gains in efficiency and user experience through its deployment of AI technology across its operations. The company said it has recently seen a 30% improvement in its containment rate — or how much of a total task is successfully managed without needing to escalate to a higher level or require further intervention — through the use of Skye, its AI-power virtual assistant. AI tools have also improved the productivity of its customer experience teams and its phone and web response times, the execs said. 'We see tremendous opportunity to continue expanding AI applications across our business to drive both the top line growth and operational excellence,' CFO Enrique Mayor-Mora said on the earnings call. For the quarter that ended May 31, CarMax reported $7.55 billion in revenue, up 6.1% from the same quarter a year ago. It posted $210.4 million in net income, up 38% year over year.

Why Won't Walmart Let Me Use Apple Pay or Google Pay? I'm Not Surprised by the Answer
You can't use Apple Pay or Google Pay if you're shopping in-store at Walmart. Kativ/Getty Images When I stop by Walmart on my way home from the gym, I don't always have my wallet on me. At most stores, it's not a big deal because I have my phone with me, so I can use my digital wallet to make a purchase. But Walmart doesn't accept Apple Pay or Google Pay. If I want to use a digital payment in store, I'd have to use Walmart Pay on the Walmart App or a digital wallet offered by OnePay, a Walmart majority-owned fintech. You can still use most major credit and debit cards when buying something in-store or online. Digital wallets offer the convenience of paying without having to carry a credit card, and they can also keep your transactions more secure than using a physical card. Growing in popularity over the past few years, Apple Wallet and Google Wallet let you store payment options as well as your digital hotel key, boarding passes and concert tickets. The OnePay Wallet can store up to 20 credit or debit cards, but it can only be used at Walmart and on and cannot hold other digital documents or passes. You can also set up a digital wallet within the Walmart app, which lets you store additional payment methods. But that means downloading yet another app to your phone. We'll break down all your payment options when shopping at Walmart. Why doesn't Walmart accept Apple Pay or Google Pay? Walmart, with more than 4,600 locations across the country, is one of the last major retailers to refuse to accept popular third-party contactless payment options like Google Pay and Apple Pay. (However, you can use your Apple Card, just not through Apple Pay.) By sticking to its own mobile payment apps, Walmart avoids paying fees for third-party options and can more easily track your purchase history. However, that exclusivity also makes purchases less convenient for customers who use digital apps and wallets as their primary means of payment. How to use OnePay Here's how to use the OnePay wallet to make a contactless payment for your Walmart purchases: Download the OnePay app and sign up for an account Add any debit or credit card to your OnePay Wallet -- If you already have a OnePay debit card, it will automatically be added to your wallet When checking out, scan the QR code that appears on the payment terminal or self-checkout screen You can also sign up for OnePay Wallet during checkout. You'll just need a credit or debit card to add to the OnePay Wallet the first time. After that, the OnePay Wallet will become your default payment method at checkout. If you're a regular Walmart shopper, the OnePay option could potentially help you save because it lets you earn reward points for every purchase, which can then be redeemed for cash back if you have a OnePay Cash account. New customers who sign up directly with OnePay Wallet can earn $15 cash back when they spend $15 or more in-store at Walmart or on How to use Walmart Pay If you download the Walmart app, you can add payment methods in a wallet within Account Settings, then use them with Walmart Pay. The app allows you to store a variety of payment methods: Credit and debit cards from most of the major issuers, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover Bank account Walmart gift cards Electronic Benefits Transfer Health care benefits cards, like HSA and FSA PayPal If you're in a store, you can use Walmart Pay within the app and then scan the QR code at checkout to pay for your purchase. When the payment is complete, you'll receive a digital receipt in the app. Alternative payment options to Walmart Pay If you don't want to use the Walmart app or the OnePay wallet, you can still make purchases at Walmart. If you're making a purchase in store, you can use cash, credit and debit cards, Walmart gift cards, Electronic Benefits Transfer, HSA and FSA cards, or PayPal (in some locations). To use PayPal at the register, you'll need the PayPal app. From the menu, select In-person & QR code to set up in-person payments. Choose "Show to pay" and a QR code will be generated, which can be scanned by the cashier to process your payment. Walmart also accepts PayPal for online purchases. If your Walmart doesn't offer PayPal at the register and you want an extra layer of security protecting your bank account or card number, you can order the item online and pay using your PayPal account. You can also still technically use your other digital wallets to shop online at Walmart online. You'll just need to enter your credit card number when checking out. In a digital wallet, you can find your card number by clicking on the payment method in the wallet, then going to the menu in the top left corner and clicking on Card Number. You'll see your card number (or virtual card number, if available), expiration date and security code, which you'll need to enter in as payment info on the
