Jasprit Bumrah's 12th five-wicket haul equals Kapil Dev record; first Indian to take 10 five-wicket hauls in SENA nations
His critics expected him to go from 'boom' to bust within eight to ten months due to his unconventional, injury-prone bowling action, but it is Jasprit Bumrah's self-belief that has enabled the Indian pace spearhead to complete nearly a decade in international cricket.
Having taken his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests on Sunday, Bumrah spoke about his secret recipe for success.
Asked if he feels bad when people write his epitaph after every big injury, Bumrah replied: "People had said in all these years (I will play only) eight months, some said 10 months but now I have played 10 years of international cricket, 12-13 years of IPL.
"Even now people say (after every injury), he will be finished, he is gone. Let them say, I will do my own work. Every four months these things will crop up, but as long as almighty wants, I will play.
"I prepare my best, and then will leave it on God as to how much more blessings he will bestow upon me." Bumrah, who took 5 for 83 in England's first innings in the opening Test, said that he is not here to change people's perceptions.
"What people write is beyond my control and I can't advise people on what to write about me. My name in headline gets viewership but I don't get bothered by that." He said that wicket is good for batting although it might crack up a bit towards the end of the match.
"At this moment pretty good wicket to bat on. It is a little bit two paced, no big demons in wicket. Due to weather, new ball will swing but that is what you expect in Test cricket. We would like to get a big total and get that cushion." India were guilty of spilling several catches, but Bumrah chose not to dwell on the lapses, preferring instead to focus on what lies ahead.
"Yeah, just for a second. But you understand that you can't really sit down and cry, isn't it? You have to move forward with the game. So, what I look to do is not to take it too far in my head and try and quickly forget it because all of them are also new to the game.
"Sometimes the ball is difficult to sight and nobody is dropping the catch purposely. Everybody is trying really hard. It does happen. So, I don't want to create a scene or put more pressure on the fielder that I'm angry, I'm kicking the box or I'm doing something. It's okay.
"It's part and parcel of the game. Obviously, if it (catches) would have been taken earlier, that's good, but people will learn from this experience," he added.
Bumrah's impressive 5/83 in 24.4 overs came despite three dropped catches, including that of Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and Harry Brook, all put down by Yashasvi Jaiswal. He had also dismissed Brook for a duck, but that delivery was later deemed a no-ball.
While speaking in the post-match press conference, Jasprit Bumrah said, 'Just for a second (disappointment on dropped catches), you just cannot sit and cry about it. You have to move forward with the game. I try not to take it too far in my head and forget it. A lot of them are new to the game, and for the first time, it is hard to see the ball here. Nobody is dropping catches intentionally, and it is a part and parcel of the game. They will learn from it. I do not want to create a scene and put more pressure on them, like I am kicking the ball or something.'
In an almost lone-warrior effort, Bumrah took 5/83 in 24.4 overs at an economy rate of 3.36. This is Bumrah's 10th five-wicket haul in SENA nations, becoming the first-ever Indian to touch this figure.
Two more five-wicket hauls will take him above Pakistan legend Wasim Akram (11 SENA fifers). This is also Bumrah's 12th five-wicket haul in away Tests, equalling that of former Indian skipper Kapil Dev.

Indian Shooters Celebrate Olympic Day; Aim For More Glory After Historic Run
Last Updated: The Indian shooting team celebrated Olympic Day with confidence. Manu Bhaker and Swapnil Kusale made history at the Paris Games and aim for more medals at the 2028 LA Olympics. The Indian shooting team celebrated Olympic Day on Monday with a sense of confidence about their continued success in upcoming Olympic events. At the Paris Games last year, India sent a 21-member team to compete in all 15 shooting events. Manu Bhaker made history by winning two medals in the women's 10m air pistol event and the 10m air pistol mixed team event alongside Sarabjot Singh. She became the only Indian athlete to win two medals in a single Olympic edition. Swapnil Kusale also made history by securing India's only Olympic medal in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions. With three out of six medals at the 2024 Olympics being won by shooters, the sport gained immense popularity in India, and the athletes received global recognition. Following their success at the recently concluded ISSF World Cup 2025 in Munich, where Indian shooters clinched four medals—two gold and two bronze—they expressed hopes of maintaining their winning streak in the future. They aim for greater success at the next Olympic edition in Los Angeles, USA, in 2028. Speaking on the significance of Olympic Day, Paris Games bronze medallist Sarabjot stated, 'This day is an important one for all of us and it reminds us of the efforts we all put in to earn the opportunity to compete in the biggest sporting event. For an athlete, a chance to represent the nation on the Olympic stage is the highest achievement. For me, to win a medal and stand on the podium is a memory that I will cherish forever." He further added, 'Our success at the Paris Olympics and the recent shooting events this year has truly sparked a fire within all the athletes to do our best. We are confident that the Indian shooters will win even more medals in LA and continue to make the nation proud." Paris Olympics medal-winning shooter Kusale echoed Sarabjot's sentiments, stating, 'Because of our success last year at the Games, all of us feel excited to celebrate the Olympic Day this year. We feel the eyes of the nation are upon us now and the entire country is praying and wishing for our success in each and every competition." 'While it is an additional responsibility to repay their faith, it also motivates us to continue to do better and make the nation proud. I am confident that India's Olympic success story in shooting will see a new chapter at the LA Games in 2028," he concluded. (With IANS Inputs). First Published: June 23, 2025, 13:37 IST

Jasprit Bumrah Gifts Special Leeds Fifer Ball To Son Angad, Wins Hearts
Last Updated: Jasprit Bumrah gifted his son the special ball with which he recorded his 14th fifer in Test cricket during the first innings in Headingley. Jasprit Bumrah marked his spectacular fifer in the first innings of the Headingley Test against England by gifting his son Angad the ball with which he delivered his spell of 5 for 83. TV presenter Sanjana Ganesan, the Indian speedster's wife, revealed via an Instagram story post that Bumrah gave the ball to his little one on Sunday, June 22. The picture of the junior Bumrah holding the red ball inked with the father's first-innings figures versus the hosts touched the hearts of cricket fans. Angad Jasprit Bumrah with Father's fifer balls 😍. — Nadeem (@cricupdatesonX) June 23, 2025 After months of layoff from Test cricket due to a back stress injury, Bumrah was back to the grind in England. He kept India in the game despite an inexperienced support cast allowing England regular opportunities to score. When Mohammed Siraj (2/122) and Prasidh Krishna (3/128) were smashed off their lengths and lines by the Bazball brigade, Bumrah kept them under the wood and provided critical blows to ensure India took a slender six-run lead after posting 471 all out in the first essay. With only T20 cricket for Mumbai Indians under his belt in recent months, Bumrah took time readjusting to Test match workload and spells, erring on his line a little bit. But the great bowler soon got into his true elements and added the wickets of Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, and Josh Tongue to his bag of scalps after having dismissed opener Zak Crawley earlier in England's innings. It was Bumrah's 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket in just 46 appearances for India. He now has a tally of 210 scalps in the traditional format at an astonishing average of 19.33. Arguably the greatest cricketer of the era, Bumrah equalled the record of the legendary Indian allrounder Kapil Dev with this being the 12th instance of him taking a fifer away from home. Notably, the 31-year-old reached the mark in only 34 foreign Tests, as opposed to Kapil's 66. Bumrah also became the first Indian to record 10 five-wicket hauls in the SENA countries. Two more will take him past Sultan of Swing Wasim Akram among Asian bowlers on the list. Bumrah now has four five-wicket hauls in Australia and three apiece in England and South Africa. He also has a pair of fifers in the West Indies and India. First Published:
