Portugal defeat Germany to advance to UEFA Nations League Final
Portugal secured a 2-1 comeback victory over Germany in the
UEFA Nations League semifinals
on Wednesday, June 4, advancing to the final for the second time in tournament history. Cristiano Ronaldo and Francisco Conceicao scored in the second half to overturn Germany's early lead, earned through a Florian Wirtz header.
Germany went ahead in the 48th minute after Florian Wirtz capitalized on a turnover by Trincao. The midfielder initiated a passing sequence with Joshua Kimmich, who delivered a return ball into open space. Wirtz headed the ball past Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa to give Germany the lead.
VAR was used to confirm Wirtz was onside before the goal was awarded. The decision prompted visible frustration from Portugal's manager Roberto Martinez, who was shown a yellow card for dissent.

Francisco Conceicao scores equalizer, shifts momentum
Portugal responded in the 63rd minute through substitute Francisco Conceicao. Shortly after Cristiano Ronaldo's free-kick attempt was blocked, Conceicao found space on the right wing. Cutting inside, the winger struck a curling shot from outside the box into the far-left corner, past Germany's goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.
The goal immediately shifted momentum in favor of Portugal. Conceicao, who had only recently entered the match, provided a critical attacking spark that changed the complexion of the game. His contribution also marked a significant moment in his growing international profile, delivering in a high-pressure semifinal.
Cristiano Ronaldo secures victory with decisive goal
Just three minutes after the equalizer, Portugal took the lead through Cristiano Ronaldo. The move started with Nuno Mendes combining with Bruno Fernandes on the left flank. Mendes advanced into the penalty area and passed across to Ronaldo, who finished with a simple tap-in to make it 2-1.
Live Events
The goal was Ronaldo's 137th for Portugal and ensured their place in the Nations League final. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa also made several key saves late in the match to preserve the lead and secure the victory.
Portugal will now prepare for the Nations League final scheduled for June 8, where they will face the winner of the second semifinal between France and Spain. With this victory, Portugal have a chance to become the first team to win the UEFA Nations League twice, following their 2019 title.
Germany, meanwhile, will play in the third-place match against the loser of the France-Spain semifinal.

Cristiano Ronaldo by the numbers as he auditions for the Club World Cup

Evergreen and still setting records at 40 years of age. Cristiano Ronaldo continues to deliver at the highest levels of international soccer after guiding Portugal to the final of the Nations League. Ronaldo captained the team and scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Germany in their semifinal on Wednesday to set up a showdown Sunday with Spain. The goal – Ronaldo's 137th for Portugal – extended his record as the leading scorer in men's international soccer. He broke the record as a 36-year-old by scoring twice in a European qualifier against Ireland in September 2021. That took his tally to 111 goals in 180 games for Portugal, surpassing the previous mark by Iran's Ali Daei. Before tucking away Nuno Mendes' cross for a tap-in against Germany, Ronaldo had gone close with a header, while he was also just inches from breaking the deadlock after the halftime break. His performance was a timely reminder for any teams playing at the Club World Cup that he's potentially available to join them for the tournament starting in the United States on June 14. FIFA president Gianni Infantino previously suggested Ronaldo could switch to one of the 32 participating clubs because of a unique transfer window created for the tournament. Ronaldo, who's still contracted to Saudi team Al-Nassr until the end of June, has been linked with several of the particpating clubs, including Brazil's Palmeiras and Wydad of Morocco, even though that club is banned by FIFA from registering new signings. A switch to Al-Nassr's bitter Riyadh rival Al-Hilal – the one Saudi club that qualified – has been mooted as a short-term solution to having Ronaldo play at the Club World Cup, where his great rival Lionel Messi will be playing with Inter Miami. FIFA would welcome the boost Ronaldo's presence can provide for ticket sales at the tournament, but such a switch to a bitter local rival for a short period would be unthinkable for players in Europe's leagues. Both Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal are among the four big Saudi clubs backed by the country's Public Investment Fund, which has a 75% stake in each. The PIF may put the national interest above that of Al-Nassr and strive to keep Ronaldo representing Saudi interests at the Club World Cup. On Thursday, FIFA announced PIF as an ' official partner ' of the Club World Cup. Saudi state money is also effectively funding the tournament's broadcasting deal that has largely backed its $1 billion prize fund being shared among the participants. Ronaldo didn't just add to his record goals-tally against Germany. Just by playing on Thursday he made his record-extending 220th international appearance. 137 – International goals scored 220 – International games played 6 – European Championship tournaments played 5 – European Championship tournaments scored 30 – European Championship match appearances 74 – European Championship appearances including qualifying 14 – European Championship goals 55 – European Championship goals including qualifying 5 – World Cup tournaments scored 52 – European Championship and World Cup appearances combined 22 – European Championship and World Cup goals combined 197 – UEFA club competition appearances 145 – UEFA club competition goals 140 – Champions League goals 67 – Most goals in Champions League knockout games 17 – Most goals in a Champions League season 183 – Champions League appearances 11 – Consecutive Champions League games scored 3 – Champions League finals scored soccer: /hub/soccer

Footwear strewn near one of the gates to Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. 'This incident occurred because appropriate arrangements were not made for the fans to enter the stadium. The announcement by the RCB on their official website that free passes would be distributed at the gates for the public is the reason for the gathering of lakhs of people. It was difficult to avert the incident. The police had deputed sufficient officers and cops, initiated all required security measures, and thereby averted a much larger tragedy,' the FIR stated. The FIR clarified that the officers of the Cubbon Park Sub-Division were deputed to duty until 5.30 am on June 4 (the morning after RCB's title win). The FIR states: 'At 6 p.m. on June 3, Shubendu Ghosh, the Chief Executive Officer of the KSCA, submitted a memorandum to the Police Inspector seeking arrangements for security measures for the victory celebrations at the stadium on June 4. The inspector told him clearly that if RCB wins, the fans will celebrate all night, and security arrangements will have to be made for that. If the KSCA organises another programme the next day, there will be disruption. ' The FIR further stated that RCB, KSCA, and DNA managements, by not providing correct information on passes and free entry to people and fans, created confusion among lakhs of fans that reached the stadium, resulting in pushing and chaos. Following this, a stampede occurred at gate numbers 2, 2A, 6, 7, 15, 17, 18, and 21. Child faints outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium as a massive crowd gathers to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2025 victory 'The Police Inspector told him that time was needed to arrange security measures, and permission was therefore denied for victory celebrations. Despite the denial of permission, RCB, DNA, and KSCA exerted pressure for the victory celebrations event to be held on June 4. "Afterwards, senior officers prepared security measures and sought permission from the Bengaluru Police Commissioner. Police personnel were immediately brought in from all police stations of Bengaluru city, and security was also arranged at the Vidhana Soudha programme to felicitate players,' the FIR mentions. To manage the crowd, additional staff was brought in from the Police Training Centre and Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP). Traffic police were deputed to manage vehicle movements, and a traffic advisory was issued. Security was arranged at the HAL airport where the RCB players arrived, at the star hotel where they checked in, and separate pilot escorts were arranged for the RCB players, says the FIR. Karnataka HC seeks report from govt. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addresses a press conference, in Bengaluru. Arrests made, top cop suspended Nikhil Sosale Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the suspension of five senior police officers, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner and DCP (Central Division) in connection with the to stampede.
