Fairgrounds construction concerns 2025 event planners
GREENSBURG – The planned revamp of the Decatur County Fairgrounds was a topic of discussion at a recent meeting of the Decatur County Board of Commissioners.
It should be noted that the Decatur County 4-H Fair in July and Power of the Past in August, as well as most events at the Decatur County Fairgrounds in 2025, will be impacted by construction of the new Headquarters Building on the grounds, as Power of the Past Coordinator Kim Carpenter learned at Monday's meeting.
Carpenter attended to seek approval for a beer garden at the 2025 POP, which is scheduled for the third weekend of August.
Carpenter said the beer garden would be located below an awning where the old Community Building sat. Commissioner Jeremy Pasel told her that would not be possible as construction would be in progress in that area during the event.
At 2024's POP, The Beach Tiki Bar and Restaurant was the vendor operating the beer 'booth' in the Community Building, which is scheduled for demolition. Because the beer booth was inside the building, Carpenter chose to make entry age-restricted. This made it difficult for families to sit together while consuming adult refreshments.
Carpenter said St. Paul Tavern is the chosen beer vendor for 2025 and an open air/barricaded beer garden selling canned beer was planned.
Pasel said the area from the Community Building to the Livestock Pavilion would be under construction and unusable for festival purposes during POP.
In reference to the area she called 'food alley,' Carpenter said there would be enough space to include the beer garden but asked about the availability of electricity there.
Pasel and Commissioners Brian Wenning both said that was still being worked out.
Pasel said that all electrical power, including internet and PA wiring, would be moved underground during construction. The remaining poles would be outfitted with electrical, but final details are not firm at this time.
County Councilors Danny Peters and Bill Metz were present in the audience and voiced their concerns about electrical and vendor placement as well.
Currently, with asbestos remediation taking place in the Community Building, the building stands without a roof waiting for demolition to begin. No date for the demolition has been set yet, and timing for the project has not been announced.

Jewelry company that started as side hustle now has pop-up shop in Boston
A woman who got her start selling charm necklaces out of her apartment is now running a full-blown jewelry brand with a pop-up shop in one of Boston's hottest summer spots. At the Caviar Bar in Boston's Seaport, there isn't drinks. Instead, customers leave with a custom charm necklace or other piece of jewelry. Turned side hustle into career WBZ-TV first met Kelly Bozigian back in 2024, when she was working full-time while shipping out thousands of orders from her living room for her jewelry brand, Coastal Caviar. She's since left the corporate world behind to chase her passion full-time. "I made the leap and I'm so glad we did because now we're at the Current in Seaport and we have our first storefront!" said Bozigian. Her new coastal-themed pop-up shop is already making waves and is full of the shiny charms and beachy vibes her clients have come to love. And it's not just necklaces - customers can make custom bag charms too. Massive reach on social media Bozigian bases her success on the massive reach she's had on social media, with many of her customers finding her through TikTok. "TikTok has been massive for us," said Bozigian. "That's how we got our start. Week two, our business took off overnight and we had close to 500 orders to fulfill." Bozigian is already dreaming up new ideas too. "We're thinking about accessories and how we can tie in that thread of personalization to stay true to the brand but also expand into other areas," said Bozigian. Caviar Bar is open through the end of the summer at the Current in the Seaport. Bozigian said she's potentially looking into permanent locations and plans to keep expanding her brand.

These toys are so hot that Chinese customs agents have seized hundreds of them in recent weeks
Unveiling their latest seizure in front of news cameras last month, two Chinese customs agents revealed not drugs or weapons – but suitcases full of plush toys. The stash on display included dozens of Pop Mart Labubus - the toothy, fluffy figurines that have sparked buying frenzies around the world, and in some cases, brawls among fans outside shops selling them. Even in China, where Pop Mart is based and most of its toys are made, people are struggling to get their hands on Labubus. When CNN recently visited a Pop Mart store at a bustling shopping mall in downtown Beijing, Labubu dolls were nowhere to be found on shelves, with only display samples remaining in glass cabinets. Labubus are typically 'sold out in seconds' when released, longtime Pop Mart fan Evelyn Lin told CNN. 'It's almost impossible to get a Labubu via the official channels,' she said. Fans are instead turning to unusual sources - including buying from smugglers. A total of 462 Pop Mart toys have been confiscated by customs authorities across China since April, according to a CNN compilation of multiple official posts. Details and footage of one seizure were posted by China's Customs Administration on social media, which stated that that the toys were intended 'for profit by resale' and seized in accordance with law. The post did not say whether any of the Labubu smugglers faced other legal consequences. Labubu is the brainchild of Hong Kong-born illustrator Kasing Lung, and it has quietly built a loyal following since its 2015 debut. But in recent months, the bunny-bodied, elf-faced creature — equal parts grotesque and adorable — has soared in popularity. Stars including Rihanna, Dua Lipa, and Lisa from K-pop group Blackpink have worn Labubus like lucky charms, and the toys were even spotted at Paris Fashion Week this year. According to Chinese state-owned media outlet Cover News, a blind box from the latest Labubu 3.0 series, originally priced at 584 yuan ($81), has been selling for between 1,000 ($139) and 2,000 yuan ($278) on the second-hand market. Pop Mart's annual results show that the company's global gross profit surged by over 125% last year, while its revenue in mainland China reached more than $1.09 billion, 34% higher than 2023. But buying from resellers carries risks. Kate Yang, a Beijing resident and Labubu enthusiast, told CNN that her two last purchases from resellers both turned out to be fakes. 'Because they are not available on official platforms, if you're in a rush to get a gift for a friend, you just can't manage to get the popular ones in time,' said Yang. 'You can only pay extra to buy from resale platforms.' CNN's Marc Stewart and Martha Zhou contributed reporting
