IT can be difficult to know what to do with dark corners of the garden.
But one couple came up with the brilliant idea of using the otherwise dead space to put a pond.

Not only that, but they managed to do it all themselves - for just £50.
Sophie took to TikTok to share a video of the process, which began by collecting rocks for the pond from a skip and removing the lawn in the area where the pond would be.
They then started to dig - the most arduous part of the whole job.
"We dug different levels and a slope for wildlife to get in and out," Sophie explained.
The next step was to add a pond liner they bought online, before popping in some oxygenating pond plants.
Once it was finished and good to go, Sophie showed her three boys eagerly waiting by the pond's edge, as she said: "The boys were so excited for frogs and newts to arrive!"
She further explained the project in the video caption, as she said it was their "lucky day" when they spotted a skip full of rocks where someone had just removed a pond.
But if you're not quite as lucky, Sophie suggested checking Facebook Marketplace for similar freebies.
While they had added the slope in the pond for wildlife to be able to easily get in and out, the area has since become a favourite for birds to have their daily bath.
They also added a pump because they wanted "to hear the sound of running water".
The Range launch HUGE summer sale for the bank holiday weekend with a playhouse, inflatable pool with slide & table sets all slashed by up to half price
And within weeks, frogs and newts had made their way to the pond, making it "all worth it".
"Definitely consider adding a pond to your garden," she concluded.
"It wasn't something we ever would have done when the boys were younger as water and drowning is a huge fear of mine so always be careful."
"It's fabulous!" one person wrote in the comments section.
"My wildlife pond is 4 years old, I have 2 large clumps of frogspawn and newts hibernating under the rocks.
"Your kids will learn so much about life!"
Top gardening trends of 2025
Gardening experts at Barnsdale Gardens has shared the top gardening trends of 2025.
Matrix planting
It seems that a top planting trend for this year is going to be Matrix Planting.
In essence, planting in groups or blocks to give an effect of being wild whilst actually being carefully managed.
Selection of the plants is essential, to give year-round interest either with flowers, seed heads or frosted/snowy spent flower heads. Some recommend using plants that seed around, but this could make managing your matrix planting harder to keep under control.
Chrysanthemum comeback
I hope that the humble Chrysanthemum makes as much of a comeback this year as Dahlias have over recent years, because the simple single flowered types, such as 'Innocence' and 'Cottage Apricot' would be spectacular within a matrix scheme.
The hardy varieties are so easy to grow in a sunny spot and give such a valuable burst of late summer and autumn colour that would lift any dull- looking border.
Blended borders
For some time now we have been promoting the growing of veg within ornamental borders and I think this could really take off this year.
The choice of ornamental-looking varieties available in seed catalogues is phenomenal and, if managed correctly, visitors to your garden will not even realise that you have veg growing!
Must-have tool
My secret is out. I discovered the Hori Hori a couple of years ago and now it seems so is everyone else.
It is such a well-made, adaptable tool that can be used as a trowel or weeding tool in the garden that and everyone I speak to who have used it absolutely would not now be without it. Enough said!
"Really nice to see someone creating habitats for wildlife when half of TikTok is full of garden builds with Astro turf and patios," another commented.
"It looks amazing!! Well done, lovely job!!" a third praised.
And for everyone saying the pond should have been built in the sun, there were just as many arguing that the shade is better.
"Our last pond was in full sun and had SO much algae overgrowth we couldn't keep on top of," one wrote.
"Now ours is half shaded and it's perfect!"
"A shady corner is ace," another agreed.
"We bought a house with a pond but it was in direct sunlight all day, the algae growth was crazy.
"We could never get it right!"
"In the summer our pond is sheltered by huge gunnera leaves and various plants," a third added.

Rolling Stones have 'recorded huge new album' after scrapping upcoming tour

The Rolling Stones, which consists of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, are said to have been working on a new album after deciding to scrap plans for a European tour The Rolling Stones are said to be working on a new album after reportedly deciding to scrap plans for a comeback tour in Europe. It's claimed that the group have more than a dozen songs ready to go after spending time in the studio. Bandmates Mick Jagger, 81, Keith Richards, 81, and Ronnie Wood, 78, are said to have been working in Metropolis Studios in London since April. It's reported that they are now in discussions over the release of their 25th studio album. ‌ It's been suggested that the trio have collaborated again with producer Andrew Watt. He worked with the Rolling Stones on their last album Hackney Diamonds, which topped the UK Albums Chart following its release back in 2023. ‌ According to the Sun, Mick, Keith, and Ronnie are working on the new album after scrapping plans for a summer tour in the UK and other countries. The band's potential European tour had been rumoured earlier this year. A source told the outlet: "Mick, Keith and Ronnie have been secretly recording their new record with their drummer Steve Jordan." It's claimed that the band are "happy" with 13 songs and are discussing when to release it. The source went on to discuss the rumoured tour, saying that it didn't work out. They said: "Originally, the plan was for them to bring their huge US tour to the UK and Europe this summer, but promoters couldn't get the dates to work." They continued: "Instead the Stones decided to get back into the studio and put down their next album." The source suggested that it's "massive" news for fans who didn't get a chance to see the acclaimed band perform live this year. ‌ There was speculation over a possible tour in January. It was suggested at the time that the band could return to the UK with their Hackney Diamonds tour to play four dates at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the capital city. A source told the Daily Mail that Mick, Keith and Ronnie couldn't wait to bring the tour to the UK. They said: "They've been planning it for months and are itching to get back out on the road and do what they do best, which is perform." Prior to subsequent reports that the tour plans had been shelved, it was initially suggested that they would also visit other locations in Europe. There was speculation that the other shows would be in Barcelona, Rome, Amsterdam and Paris. ‌ The speculation came following the Rolling Stones' Hackney Diamonds in the US and Canada last year. The trio performed at a host of venues, including SoFi Stadium in Inglewood and BC Place in Vancouver, whilst on the tour. The tour was in support of their album Hackney Diamonds, which was released the previous year. It was their eighth studio album to top the charts in the UK, following in the footsteps of albums like Aftermath and Emotional Rescue. The Mirror has approached the Stones spokesperson for comment.

Sophie Habboo says husband Jamie Laing threatened to leave her over her pregnancy hormones

Sophie Habboo and Jamie Laing are expecting their first child together but it seems the pair have had a few rows after the Made In Chelsea star told his wife she was being 'unbearable' while dealing with her pregnancy symptoms. Sophie Habboo has candidly opened up about her extreme pregnancy hormones in her recent podcast, confessing her husband Jamie Laing threatened to leave after she became intensely 'grumpy' as a result of them. Jamie Laing, 36, and his wife Sophie, 30, are getting ready to welcome their first child, having announced the happy news with fans at the beginning of the month. The couple have been flooded with support from fans as they share heartwarming updates about their pregnancy, including some adorable snaps of Sophie's growing baby bump. On their podcast, NewlyParents, the couple discussed Sophie's hormones, revealing that Jamie told her she was being 'unbearable' when she was feeling nauseated all day. ‌ She recalled: "We are leaving and I feel really sick this day, unless I have a piece of bread in my mouth, I feel I'm going to vomit. And Jamie gets his camera out and goes, 'I'm going to vlog today'. I'm like, 'What on my Sunday that I'm about to vomit all day long? He's told me he's going to take me to Borough Market so I can eat the world, but it's for the vlog. ‌ "And what happened was Jamie sits down and he goes 'I'm going to call my friends and ask them what I should do about this. Because I'm going to have to leave you. "I'm going to leave you because you're just so unbearable right now. And I'm going to ask my friends how to do that." She recounted how she cried and wailed and said: "And I went 'You're going to leave me and I'm pregnant'.' ‌ Sophie and Jamie laughed as they retold the story but Jamie was quick to defend himself, saying he was totally unaware of the hormonal changes she was going through and is now completely supportive, the Metro reports. Jamie said: "The amount of people who are going to call me an a*****e. Just a caveat very quickly, I had no idea the emotional journey that you go on, how your body changes. "I just didn't understand the extreme things that go on and since having read stuff and by the way Sophie sends me stuff every day on Instagram, I am awe of what you go through. The hormone change is wild." ‌ Sophie then added: "The bowel change is wild, it's really upsetting and no one tells you that." In the podcast, they discussed their conception journey as Jamie admitted to not really understanding the the ins and outs of conceiving a child. ‌ He said: "Turns out I had no idea about this. I honestly thought for the whole of my life right? That I was walking around with a loaded gun.". Sophie immediately said his phrase was a 'rank description' as he continued to say he thought his penis was a 'loaded gun full of semen'. He said: "I thought it was easy to get anyone pregnant, like so easy". ‌ Sophie added that he was 'thick' when it came to speaking about fertility and explained that he had been wanting to try for a baby even when she was on her period. ‌ Jamie revealed he also had no idea that women could only get pregnant on just one day of the month. This podcast episode comes as the couple have rebranded their podcast from NewlyWeds to NearlyParents. ‌ In a press release about the change, Sophie said: "I'm so excited for this next chapter of our podcast, and of our lives! I feel like NewlyWeds has always been about sharing the real, messy, and wonderful parts of our relationship, and now we get to do the same as we start our family. It feels so special to bring our listeners along for the ride." Jamie added: "I can't wait to share this chapter of our lives with you – and to have a whole new bunch of hilarious stories to share! "NearlyParents is going to be all about the ups, the downs, and the in-betweens of not only becoming parents, but how we also navigate everything life throws at us in between!" ‌ Announcing the news that they are expecting their first baby together, the pair shared a touching video of their scan on Instagram. The footage shows Sophie lying on a hospital bed and smiling at Jamie, who asked how she was feeling and said, 'Oh my god.' The pair then saw the scan, and Jamie could be heard saying, 'Are you kidding me?' The video then panned to an ecstatic Sophie listening to their baby's heartbeat.

'Prankster' storms stage at Katy Perry concert in Sydney

SYDNEY — Pop star Katy Perry was surprised at her concert in Sydney on Monday when an attendee briefly ran up to her on stage and grabbed her before being escorted away by security. Perry was midway through her show at the the 21,000-seat Qudos Bank Arena, the second of three sold-out dates in the Australian city on her 'Lifetimes Tour.' Video footage posted by a concertgoer and verified by NBC News showed a man run down the circular stage, throw an arm around Perry's shoulder and start bouncing and dancing wildly. Perry, who appeared surprised, quickly moved away as she continued singing her 2008 hit 'Hot N Cold.' 'There's never going to be another show like this, so just enjoy it, Sydney,' she said, as the fan appeared to struggle with security guards. 'What the hell is going on?' Perry said to the crowd, as the man was dragged off stage. A representative for Perry could not immediately be reached for comment. The incident highlights growing concerns about poor etiquette at concerts, with audience members throwing items at artists such as Harry Styles and Lady Gaga. Police in the state of New South Wales, which includes Sydney, told NBC News that a man had been arrested and charged with two offenses: entering enclosed land and obstructing a person in performance of work or duties. They said he had been detained by security after jumping on stage during a concert around 9:20 p.m. local time. The man has been granted conditional bail and is due to appear in court on June 23, the police said, declining to name him in the meantime. He has also been banned for six months from Sydney Olympic Park, where the arena is located. The man has been identified in Australian media as Johnson Wen, who describes himself as a 'prankster' on his TikTok account, where he goes by the username pyjamamann and has a little over 1,100 followers. 'I was like, 'Let me get on stage with you,' and then she freaked out because I think she realized I wasn't a performer,' Wen told Australia's 9 News about the incident, adding that he was 'about to do the extra Fortnite move, but security got there too quick.' Previous videos posted on Wen's account show him running on stage at a concert by The Weeknd in Melbourne last year, and onto the field at the FIFA Women's World Cup final in 2023. 'I'm planning to quit forever, because you get in way too much trouble for it,' he said. Wen did not immediately respond to a request for comment. By Tuesday, he had posted four different videos of him rushing the stage. "Katy Perry your songs are my Childhood Memmory since 2008," he wrote in a caption for one of the videos. Another caption read,"Me Hugging Katy Perry on Stage. I said to Her 'let me dance for you'"
