Dozens of birds and fish die in 400m abandoned net
Volunteers have spent five hours removing a 1,300ft-long (400m) abandoned fishing net from Plymouth Sound National Marine Park.
The net, which had trapped and killed dozens of fish, seabirds, crabs, and lobsters, was found at Drake's Island.
Birds are thought to have drowned after getting entangled as they dived for fish trapped in the net, which was retrieved on Monday.
"It was honestly one of the worst ones we've done in quite a long time," said Luke Bullus of Cornwall-based charity Fathoms Free.
The so-called ghost fishing gear - nets or other fishing gear lost, discarded or abandoned in the sea - was reported to Fathoms Free by concerned members of the public and the Devon and Severn Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority.
The team discovered the net was much larger than anticipated, stretching hundreds of metres underwater and entangling various marine life, including shags and an oystercatcher.
There were dozens of lobsters, dozens of edible and spider crabs of all sizes, wrasse, cat sharks, bull huss, and countless decomposing fish that were unidentifiable due to the condition they were in, acting as bait to the other marine life in the area.
No larger marine mammals such as seals or dolphins were found in the net.
The net's extensive length and entanglement with rocks and kelp made the task particularly challenging, said Mr Bullus.
He also admitted it was an emotional as well as physical task for all involved.
"The birds are quite hard-hitting because they would have drowned as they dived down to fish that they saw tangled in the net," he said.

More than 500,000 tonnes of fishing gear is estimated to be lost or abandoned every year in the world's seas and oceans, according to a report by conservationists Global Ghost Gear Initiative in 2020.
Plymouth Sound is the UK's first national marine park, a project which aims to engage the city's residents and businesses with the marine environment.

Pawsitive Beginnings expands its animal-assisted therapy network with new partner and fox addition

Isla was born to a vixen who was surrendered to another fox rescue group in Minnesota. Isla's mother was part of a large group of animals who had survived the exotic pet trade. Navarro said Penny, a longtime Pawsitive Beginnings fox resident, has "adopted" Isla as one of her own since the kit's arrival. "These animals cannot be returned to the wild for a variety of reasons that include their inability to blend into the wild and the fact that it is illegal to introduce non-native farmed foxes back into the environment," she said. "Because we believe that rehabilitation is possible for everyone, regardless of species, we feel partnering these foxes with other survivors of trauma is a win-win situation for everyone." In addition to Christina's Courage, Pawsitive Beginnings also partners with Kinder in the Keys, the Florida Keys Children's Shelter, Key Bridge, Inc. and Project Lighthouse to provide the free animal-assisted therapy program. 22 crew members rescued from lifeboat in North Pacific after ship carrying 3,000 cars catches fire
The crew of a cargo ship carrying 3,000 vehicles to Mexico, including 800 electric vehicles, abandoned ship after they could not control a fire aboard the vessel in waters off Alaska's Aleutian island chain. A large plume of smoke was initially seen at the ship's stern coming from the deck loaded with electric vehicles Tuesday, according to US Coast Guard photos and a Wednesday statement from the ship's management company, London-based Zodiac Maritime. There were no reported injuries among the 22 crew members of the Morning Midas. Crew members abandoned ship, were evacuated onto a lifeboat and rescued by the crew of a nearby merchant vessel called the Cosco Hellas in the North Pacific, roughly 300 miles (490 kilometers) southwest of Adak Island. Adak is about 1,200 miles (1,930 kilometers) west of Anchorage, the state's largest city. The crew initiated emergency firefighting procedures with the ship's onboard fire suppression system. But they were unable bring the flames under control. 'The relevant authorities have been notified, and we are working closely with emergency responders with a tug being deployed to support salvage and firefighting operations,' Zodiac Maritime said in a statement. 'Our priorities are to ensure the continued safety of the crew and protect the marine environment.' The US Coast Guard said it sent aircrews to Adak and a ship to the area. The status of the fire onboard the ship was unknown as of Wednesday afternoon, but smoke was still emanating from it, according to the Coast Guard. Rear Admiral Megan Dean, commander of the Coast Guard's Seventeenth District, said in a statement that as the search and rescue part of the response concluded, the Coast Guard was working with Zodiac Maritime to determine how to recover the ship and what will be done with it. 'We are grateful for the selfless actions of the three nearby vessels who assisted in the response and the crew of motor vessel Cosco Hellas, who helped save 22 lives,' Dean said. The 600-foot (183-meter) Morning Midas, a car and truck carrier, was built in 2006 and sails under a Liberian flag. Earlier this month, a Dutch safety board called for improving emergency response on North Sea shipping routes after a deadly 2023 fire on a freighter that was carrying 3,000 automobiles, including nearly 500 electric vehicles, from Germany to Singapore. That fire killed one person, injured others and burned out of control for a week, and the ship was eventually towed to a port in the northern Netherlands for salvage. They said she fled to the United States for safety. The law group said she was processed into Tacoma on Monday night. However, they haven't been granted access to her since her transfer. The Innovation Law Lab argued ICE used 'deceptive and unethical practices' to detain OJM and strip her of her due process rights. They said a federal judge has approved their petition to find out why ICE arrested her and they hope to learn those details soon. A small group of protesters gathered in downtown Vancouver to show their support, chanting, 'Immigrants are welcome here.' 'It's so appalling because when we heard about the ICE detention of the young trans woman from Mexico who was just following the rules,' said Rebecca Ketih, who helped organize the rally. The Department of Homeland Security told KOIN 6 News in a statement on Tuesday that they're doing what they've been told to do. DHS said in part, 'ICE is now following the law and placing these illegal aliens in expedited removal, as they always should have been.' 'It's anyone with brown skin. And this young lady was innocent,' said Carolyn Fu, another rallygoer at the Vancouver demonstration. Fu said she is originally from Hawaii and knows what it's like for her people to be discriminated against. Even still, she said the arrest has sent shockwaves through the community and that people are ready to fight. 'Today's rally is going to wrap up, but it's not going to stop. We're continuing. We're going to continue to fight and, and make sure that our representatives are going to look for her and stand up for her, no matter what it takes,' Fu said.
