DBS, UOB, OCBC return surplus capital with over S$700 million of buybacks

[SINGAPORE] In the first five months of 2025, 63 primary-listed Singapore companies conducted share buybacks through open market acquisitions, spending a total of S$930 million – an 84% jump from S$505 million in the same period last year.
This was the highest buyback level for the first five months of a year since 2020, based on an SGX (Singapore Exchange) market report on Monday (Jun 2).
The local bourse said this was largely due to market volatility in April, which saw S$425 million of primary-listed shares purchased by issuers.
'The month of April 2025 produced the fourth highest monthly tally in buyback consideration for the past 10 years,' they added.
The surge in buybacks does not include activity from secondary-listed companies or Singapore-listed Real Estate Investment Trusts (S-Reits).
May alone accounted for S$176 million in share buybacks from primary-listed companies. UOB led the charge with S$144 million worth of shares at an average price of S$35.33. This brought UOB's total buybacks to S$253 million for the year so far.

DBS followed with S$18 million in buybacks at an average price of S$44.07, while Olam Group repurchased S$6 million worth of shares at an average price of S$0.93.
For the first five months of 2025, the trio of local banks accounted for 77 per cent of the total S$930 million in filed buybacks.
In the first five months of 2025, DBS led the local banking trio in share buybacks, repurchasing S$277 million worth of shares at an average price of S$42.13. UOB followed closely with S$253 million in buybacks at an average price of S$34.84 per share, while OCBC repurchased S$182 million worth of shares at an average price of S$16.69.
'The trio are actively returning surplus capital through share buybacks over the next two to three years,' the report noted.
Beyond the primary list, secondary-listed Hongkong Land has also been actively buying back its shares, spending US$55 million at an average price of US$5.05 under a US$200 million programme announced on April 24. The deals, funded by recent transactions and capital recycling, are part of the company's strategy to cancel repurchased shares by Dec 31, 2025.
This aligns with Hongkong Land's broader shift, launched in 2024, to focus capital away from build-to-sell projects and towards developing ultra-premium commercial properties in key Asian cities for long-term growth.
Meanwhile, managers of ESR Reit and Stoneweg European Reit have also continued to buy back units as part of their capital management strategies.
ESR Reit repurchased 838,700 units in May at an average price of S$2.21, following the buyback of 50.3 million units in the first four months of 2025 ahead of its 1-for-10 reverse stock split.
The Reit manager views buybacks as a flexible, cost-effective tool to boost return on equity (ROE) and net asset value (NAV), while also helping to reduce market volatility and support investor confidence, SGX said.
Stoneweg European Reit acquired 37,000 units at 1.47 euros each on May 15, following earlier buybacks in March and April. In FY2024, the Reit repurchased 1.5 million units as part of its capital management strategy to enhance ROE and NAV.

(CDL) agreed to sell its majority stake in one of Singapore's largest mixed-use developments, according to a person familiar with the matter, as the developer seeks to reduce debt and regain investor confidence after a family feud rocked the firm. CDL will sell its 50.1 per cent stake in South Beach to minority owner IOI Properties Group, the person said, requesting not to be identified because the information is private. Malaysian developer IOI will have full ownership following the deal. The deal will value the complex at about $2.75 billion, the person said. An IOI spokesperson declined to comment. CDL called for a trading halt at 9.20am on June 4 pending release of an announcement. Its shares jumped 1.6 per cent, or eight cents, to $4.95 before the trading halt. CDL has been under pressure to sell assets after a feud divided the Kwek family, the wealthiest clan in Singapore. Despite mending relations with his father and chairman Kwek Leng Beng, the firm's chief executive officer Sherman Kwek acknowledged in April that the dispute had hurt shareholders' confidence, and said that reducing the growing debt load is a priority. The deal will help CDL to meet a pledge to exceed the roughly $600 million in divestments it made in 2024, which fell short of a $1 billion target. The complex in Singapore's central business district includes retail space, a 34-story office tower, and a 45-story building housing a JW Marriott Hotel. The purchase adds to IOI's growing presence in Singapore, with residential developments as well as assets like IOI Central Boulevard Towers, a newly opened city center office project. The Malaysia-listed firm is controlled by the Lee family, which made its fortunes from palm oil. The South Beach development, designed by Norman Foster's architectural firm, has seen ownership changes before. CDL bought the site for nearly $1.69 billion in 2007 along with two foreign partners, a unit of state-owned Dubai World Corp., and El-Ad Group. The global financial crisis led to a yearslong delay in construction and the two partners exited the project, with IOI eventually taking a minority stake in 2011. The elder Kwek resisted allowing IOI to take an equal stake in order to maintain control, according to a biography published in 2023. Major tenant Meta Platforms gave up its seven floors of space at the office tower in 2024, and occupancy dropped to 92.4 per cent as of the end of March, compared with 94.4 per cent at the end of 2024. Singapore's soaring ambitions: Changi Airport and SIA prepare for the next takeoff

'Build and they will come' may be the idea behind the construction of Changi Airport's Terminal 5, which will be able to handle another 50 million passengers annually when the first phase is completed in the mid-2030s. The airport already seems to have excess capacity. With a capacity to handle 90 million passengers annually, Changi recorded 68.4 million passenger movements in the financial year 2024/25 ended March 31, according to a Changi Airport Group (CAG) press release dated May 24. That was more than any recent year. Passenger movements totalled 62.5 million in 2023/24 and 42.6 million in 2022/23 after dropping during COVID to 5.2 million in 2021/22 and 1.1 million in 2020/21 from 62.9 million in 2019/20, according to the CAG 2024 annual report. Changi Airport's soaring profit However, despite operating below capacity, the airport is a goldmine. Net profit jumped from S$431 million in 2023/24 to S$841 million in 2024/25. Revenue grew from S$2.7 billion to S$3 billion in tandem with the rise in passenger traffic. One of the world's busiest airports, Changi now links Singapore directly to about 170 cities globally, with close to 100 airlines operating more than 7,200 flights weekly. Passenger movements were much lower – 53.7 million a year – when the Terminal 5 construction project was announced by the then Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in 2013. He said then that the new terminal would double the airport's passenger capacity. Changi didn't have to be so big at the time, but the planners were building for the future. 'Airlines delivered a combined net profit of $32.4 billion in 2024 when passenger numbers reached a new high of 4.8 billion,' says the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in its 2025 Annual Review. SIA Group profit and revenue The SIA Group rode this wave of growth with resounding success. It posted a record net profit of S$2.8 billion in 2024/25, bolstered by a one-off non-cash gain of S$1.1 billion from the Air India–Vistara merger. Together, SIA and its low-cost subsidiary Scoot carried a record 39.4 million passengers while group revenue reached a new high of S$19.54 billion. As of March 31, 2025, the SIA Group operated a fleet of 205 aircraft with an average age of seven years and eight months. This included 145 passenger planes and seven freighters under SIA, and 53 passenger aircraft under Scoot. In April 2025, the group added one Airbus A321neo and one Boeing 787-8 — and, as of May 1, the group had another 78 aircraft on order. Its combined passenger network spanned 128 destinations across 36 countries and territories, with SIA serving 79 destinations and Scoot flying to 71. Changi was named Skytrax World's Best Airport in 2025, while Singapore Airlines ranked second in Skytrax's 2024 list of the world's best airlines, just behind Qatar Airways. Fierce competition Yet, the competition is fierce. In Northeast Asia, Hong Kong International Airport and Incheon International Airport (Seoul) are major contenders, supported by carriers like Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, and Asiana Airlines. Within Southeast Asia, Changi faces regional rivals in Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Kuala Lumpur International, and Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta airports. Airlines such as Thai Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, and fast-growing low-cost carriers like AirAsia and Lion Air offer aggressive pricing and expansive networks. Further afield, Middle Eastern giants like Dubai International and Doha's Hamad International, along with their flagship carriers Emirates and Qatar Airways, also compete heavily in the long-haul and transit passenger segments. Despite this, Singapore's aviation ecosystem enjoys key competitive advantages. Changi is widely praised for its efficiency, passenger experience, and seamless connectivity. SIA's reputation for exceptional service, a modern fleet, and strategic global partnerships enhances its appeal to international travellers. Looking ahead, growth prospects remain strong. The rise of the Asian middle class, increasing disposable incomes, and an appetite for international travel are likely to fuel sustained demand. For Singapore, a well-connected aviation hub is vital—not just for tourism, but for trade, investment, and its standing as a global business centre. 'The aviation ecosystem now contributes 5% of our GDP, and creates and sustains many good jobs for Singaporeans,' as Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said at the Terminal 5 groundbreaking ceremony on May 14. Nonetheless, challenges persist. Geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, and the aviation industry's urgent need to adopt sustainable practices demand vigilance and adaptability. Environmental pressures are rising: airlines are under scrutiny to reduce emissions. In response, SIA is exploring sustainable aviation fuels and acquiring more fuel-efficient aircraft, while Changi is rolling out energy-saving measures and tapping renewable energy sources. The airline and the airport's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and save energy stem from the same vision that underpins Terminal 5. This is more than just infrastructure expansion—it is a statement of intent. Singapore is building for the future. PHOTO: AFP US-backed Gaza aid group to halt distribution on June 4, UN to vote on ceasefire demand CAIRO/JERUSALEM/NEW YORK - The US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) will not give out any aid on June 4 as it presses Israel to boost civilian safety beyond the perimeter of its distribution sites, a day after dozens of Palestinians seeking aid were killed. The GHF said it has asked the Israeli military to "guide foot traffic in a way that minimises confusion or escalation risks" near military perimeters; develop clearer guidance for civilians; and enhance training to support civilian safety. "Our top priority remains ensuring the safety and dignity of civilians receiving aid," said a GHF spokesperson. An Israeli military spokesperson warned civilians against moving in areas leading to GHF sites on June 4, deeming them "combat zones". The Israeli military said on June 3 that it opened fire on a group of people it viewed as a threat near a GHF food aid distribution site. The International Committee of the Red Cross said at least 27 people were killed and dozens injured. The GHF said the incident was "well beyond" its site. Palestinians who collected food GHF boxes on June 3 described scenes of pandemonium, with no-one overseeing the handover of supplies or checking IDs, as crowds jostled for aid. The UN Security Council is also set to vote on June 4 on a demand for a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas and humanitarian access across Gaza, where aid has trickled amid chaos and bloodshed after Israel lifted an 11-week blockade on the enclave where famine looms. "It is unacceptable. Civilians are risking – and in several instances losing – their lives just trying to get food," UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on June 3, adding that the aid distribution model backed by the US and Israel was "all a recipe for disaster, which is exactly what is going on." That model is run by the newly created GHF, which started operations in the enclave a week ago and said on June 3 that it has given out more than seven million meals from three so-called secure distribution sites. GHF interim executive director John Acree urged humanitarians in Gaza: "Work with us and we will get your aid delivered to those who are depending on it." US veto? The UN and other aid groups have refused to work with the GHF because they say it is not neutral and the distribution model militarises aid. GHF uses private US security and logistics companies to get aid to the distribution sites. It is the latest in a string of efforts to get more aid into the enclave, where experts say the entire population of some 2.1 million people is at risk of famine. Jordan in 2024 spearheaded humanitarian air drops, while the US briefly installed a floating aid pier, but it was beset by challenges. The UN has long-blamed Israel and lawlessness in the enclave for hindering the delivery of aid into Gaza and its distribution throughout the war zone. Israel accuses Hamas of stealing aid, which the group denies. Israel said on June 3 that three of its soldiers had been killed in fighting in northern Gaza. Gaza health officials said at least 18 more Palestinians were killed in other military strikes in the territory on June 3. Reuters could not independently verify the reports in northern and southern Gaza. The 10 elected members of the UN Security Council have asked for the 15-member body to vote on June 4 on a draft resolution that demands "an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties." The draft text, seen by Reuters, also demands the release of all hostages held by Hamas and others, and the immediate lifting of all restrictions on the entry of aid and its safe and unhindered distribution, including by the UN, throughout Gaza. "The time to act has already passed," Slovenia's UN Ambassador Samuel Zbogar told Reuters. "It is our historical responsibility not to remain silent." As US President Donald Trump's administration tries to broker a ceasefire in Gaza, it was not immediately clear if Washington would veto the draft text. A spokesperson for the US mission to the UN said: 'We cannot preview our actions currently under consideration.' A resolution needs nine votes in favour and no vetoes by the permanent members - the United States, Russia, China, Britain or France - to pass. The war in Gaza has raged since 2023 after Hamas militants killed 1,200 people in Israel in an October 7 attack and took some 250 hostages back to the enclave, according to Israeli tallies. Israel responded with a military campaign that has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities, which do not distinguish between fighters and non-combatants.
