Civil defence authorities seek units in all districts for better coordination
The Directorate of Civil Defence (DCD), which carried out safety drills across the state last week following Indo-Pakistan tensions, has sought establishment of Civil Defence units in all districts of the state for better coordinatio.
Currently, only eight districts in the state, primarily those along the coastline, have Civil Defence units. The official said having more units would mean extra manpower, which can be diverted to any place in case of an emergency.
This, along with various other reinforcements including filling up of vacancies and advanced alarm systems, have been sought by the Directorate of Civil Defence so as to improve efficiency in the face of any emergency-like situation in the future.
An official said since the role of the Civil Defence had not been highlighted as they were during the recent drills, several of the reinforcements sought by them had been pending before the government.
'However, this time around, the government seems positive in the aftermath of what transpired. We are hoping that the reinforcements sought by us will approved,' said the official.
The official said they have also sought filling up of the vacancies at the Directorate which hardly has 150 people working for 450 posts.
The official added that they are also in talks with the government to upgrade the emergency sirens, several of which are not working, and replace them with the ones using more advanced systems.
The official said the government has also approved the inclusion of civil defence in the academic curriculum of the Mumbai University to train students from college-level.

In a major revelation in espionage cases against India involving YouTubers Jyoti Malhotra and Jasbir Singh with connections to Pakistan, the name of a Pakistani woman known as 'Madam N' has come to light. Naushaba Shahzad Masood, who was identified as 'Madam N' by intelligence services, is reportedly connected to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). She is allegedly involved in spying and attempting to create sleeper cells in India by using social media influencers and YouTubers. This revelation came after Jasbir Singh, a YouTuber with over 1.1 million subscribers on his channel 'Jaan Mahal", was arrested by the Punjab Police's State Special Operations Cell (SSOC), Mohali, for his alleged involvement in a Pakistan-backed espionage network. Who Is 'Madam N'? Naushaba Shahzad Masood runs a travel and tourism business in Lahore, which is called 'Jaiyana Travels and Tourism'. Her husband is a retired civil services officer in Pakistan, according to News18 India. However, an investigation has revealed that Masood has been trying to set up a network of 500 spies in India at the behest of ISI and the Pakistani Army, by influencing social media influencers and YouTubers. She particularly targeted people from the Hindu and Sikh communities. Masood has allegedly placed her agents in several Indian cities, including Delhi, where they promote her travel agency via social media and other channels. These agents are reportedly engaged in persuading individuals to participate in espionage activities on behalf of the Pakistani Army. How Did She Carry Out Her Plans? In the last six months, Masood has facilitated the entry of nearly 3,000 Indians and 1,500 Indians living abroad into Pakistan, the probe revealed. She was in direct contact with the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi, where she used her contacts to get visas approved immediately. She had deep relations with Visa First Secretary Suhail Qamar, Trade Counsellor Umar Sheryar and an officer named Danish associated with ISI, who had allegedly helped Jyoti Malhotra and was expelled from the country. Hence, visas were being provided to Indians at Masood's request. Using Sikh, Hindu Pilgrims The investigation further revealed that Masood single-handedly handled the tours of Sikh and Hindu pilgrims in Pakistan in collaboration with the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB). She charged more money from the passengers and used it for Pakistani propaganda and ISI activities. Her contact number was located on the phones of the arrested spies. Additionally, two Pakistani bank accounts have also been found, through which funds were transferred from India. The money trail from these accounts is currently under investigation. Two content creators – Jasbir Singh and Haryana-based Jyoti Malhotra – are currently under custody for espionage activities. The action on spy networks within the country comes in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people dead and the four-day military conflict with Pakistan that followed. Putin, Trump Discussed India-Pak Conflict During Phone Call: Kremlin Aide
Moscow: The recent conflict between India and Pakistan was among the issues discussed during a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, according to a Kremlin aide. During their conversation on Wednesday, the two leaders discussed Ukraine and also touched on some other issues, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov told a briefing. "They also touched upon the Middle East and the armed conflict between India and Pakistan, which was stopped with the personal participation of President Trump," Ushakov was quoted as saying by Russia's state-run TASS news agency. Ushakov, however, didn't share the details. Trump has repeatedly claimed that he stopped India and Pakistan from fighting. However, India has been maintaining that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two militaries. Meanwhile, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged President Putin to assist in resolving the conflict with India, his special aide Syed Tariq Fatemi said. Fatemi, who met Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Tuesday, handed over a letter from Sharif for Putin. His visit came days after a highly successful tour of a multi-party parliamentary delegation led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, who spread awareness about Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism and got solid Russian backing for India's zero-tolerance policy against terrorism. "I met with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov. I gave him a letter from our prime minister to Mr. Putin. We asked...[him] to use his influence to make sure that India and Pakistan sit down at the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution," Fatemi said on Wednesday. He also emphasised that Pakistan awaits any initiative from Russia that would help reduce the degree of tension with India, TASS reported. "We are here to see support from Russia to any initiative that would ease tensions. Pakistan and India must sit down at the negotiating table," he was quoted as saying by the Russian news agency. "We are ready to sit down with them at the negotiating table and let them solve the problem," he added. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7. Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions. The on-ground hostilities ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10.
