Breakout star Mikey Madison wins best actress Oscar for ‘Anora' over Hollywood veteran Demi Moore
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mikey Madison won the best actress Oscar on Sunday for 'Anora,' a role that catapulted the 25-year-old into a burgeoning film career after achieving initial success on television.
The Brooklyn-set comedy-drama had received six nominations.
Madison had been best known for playing a sullen teenager in the FX comedy series 'Better Things,' which ended in 2022. She also appeared in the hit movies 'Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood' and the fifth installment of the horror franchise 'Scream.'
Those jobs attracted the attention of director-writer Sean Baker, who penned the title role in 'Anora' for Madison. She studied Russian and did her own stunts in the film, in addition to learning to pole dance to play an exotic dancer who marries the son of a Russian oligarch.
The film debuted to critical acclaim at Cannes last year, winning the Palme d'Or. It has gained momentum ever since, with its box-office success easily outearning its $6 million budget.
Hollywood veteran Demi Moore of 'The Substance' had been the Oscar front-runner, having won over Madison at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. However, Madison beat out Moore for the BAFTA two days before Oscar voting ended, as well as at last weekend's Independent Spirit Awards.
She was born Mikaela Madison Rosberg in Los Angeles, one of five children of psychologist parents. Her mother signed her up for an acting class in her mid-teens after Madison had trained in competitive horseback riding, which she found lonely compared to the collaborative nature of acting.
In addition to Moore, the other nominees were Cynthia Erivo for 'Wicked,' Karla Sofía Gascón for 'Emilia Pérez" and Fernanda Torres for 'I'm Still Here.'

Moore began leading The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1970, not long after her starring role on The Dick Van Dyke Show. The show was produced by her company, MTM Enterprises, which was behind many successful TV series. It's not easy being green. Of the nearly 1,000 celebrity caricatures on the walls of iconic theater-district institution Sardi's, the one pilfered the most, oddly, is Kermit the Frog. 'Kermit was stolen three times. And then we screwed him up to the wall,' Johnny Felidi, longtime maître d' at the 100-year-old eatery, told The Post ahead of Sunday's Tony Awards. Advertisement Another celebrity who had to be screwed at the beloved West 44th Street eatery: Barbra Streisand. After her original 1963 portrait was purloined, it took the 'Funny Girl' 55 years to agree to another caricature. 8 Kermit the Frog, who filmed a scene at Sardi's for 'The Muppets Take Manhattan,' had his caricature stolen three times. Both Brit Eady and Kenya Moore (amidst their bitter feud) did not attend the recent taping. Per People , the reunion recently filmed on Thursday, June 5, in Atlanta, and while Moore not being present is that shocking, Eady's absence definitely is, as she was a main focal point of the season. According to the outlet, Eady's decision not to attend was her own, but Moore was reportedly not invited by Bravo. Confirming the reports, the network released the RHOA reunion seating chart and neither of the ladies were present. 'RHOA' Reunion Taping Following the reports of their absence, both Eady and Moore spoke out on social media. 'As everyone is now aware, I'm not attending the reunion,' Eady wrote on Instagram Stories. 'This was my decision. The events of this season have devastated me, and while I cannot say much right now, I do want to set the record straight about one thing: the graphic sexual photo surrounding the events in Episode 5. That photo was not me.' 'Based on what I was told, assumed that it was somehow a photo of me — which is why I reacted in the way that I did,' she continued. 'I do not know who was in that photo, but upon seeing it for the first time recently, I now know it was not me,' she said. 'I look forward to seeking accountability and moving past this dark part of my life.' Meanwhile Moore took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to respond to her absence. 'I'm disappointed to not be a part of the RHOA 16 reunion taping today,' Moore wrote.
