Help wanted: Experienced garbologists
R Edwin Sudhir, a Bengaluru-based journalist and writer, has the interesting privilege of living in a once-sleepy town which has morphed into a city fast-forwarding into a connected world but sadly disconnected with the ground realities of more people competing for shrinking space. The experience is oddly exhilarating yet often mildly alarming for long-time residents who see how technology has transformed a sleepy beantown into a bustling boomtown. And swept its residents too in the headlong rush to keep pace. LESS ... MORE
Bengaluru generates humongous tonnes of garbage every day. The city's civic body may give you an official figure but the actual figure could be higher, as it usually is with government data. A lot of it ends up on pavements and street corners and some piles up on overflowing vans parked by the roads. Much of it is carted away by smelly vehicles which do the rounds every morning. Men from them dart across to pick up (mostly) black, (often) biodegradable bags from bungalows or tip the contents of blue, plastic drums from apartments into their trucks.
Off they go to one landfill or the other on the outskirts of the city. This exercise is repeated every morning with some regularity, marred by festival days or flash strikes.
Some of this garbage is segregated and some is mixed.
That's why Greater Bengaluru Authority desperately needs garbologists. Its precursor, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, tried bravely to deal with the refuse but GBA needs men and women trained in garbology. Sadly, no university in India seems to offer this course and that's where the three Bengaluru universities can be pioneers. There are several models, like the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Our varsities can use the American models to design course content and customise material to local conditions. Students can intern with GBA and once they graduate, they can be absorbed into its solid waste department.
It's not rocket science, after all. Collect waste from residents, segregrate it and dispose it as per protocol. Waste-to-energy management is a huge opportunity for entrepreneurs willing to get their hands dirty. Anu Aga's Thermax Ltd in Pune has shown it's eminently possible.
Of course, residents need to do their bit, without leaving everything to the SWD. For starters, segregate waste, ensure black spots don't form, don't dump plastic water bottles and empty chips packets into drains, among others. Every bit helps.
To circle back a bit, garbologists are not only waste disposers. They analyse a city's waste to look for patterns of how it's generated and look for better ways to clear it. Bengaluru will be going to the root cause of the garbage problem and hopefully find solutions quickly. Lest we are forced to suffer an olfactory assault of rotting waste and suffer the ignominy of going from Garden City Garbage City in the span of just a few decades.

National Donut Day 2025: Offers, deals, and freebies if you have a sweet tooth
Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme and a lot many other outlets that have donuts as a sweet tooth donut offering in the menu, are gearing up for National Donut Day 2025 celebrations. National Donut Day 2025 is a great day to sharpen your dessert consumption skills, and if you are based in the US, you will receive some amazing offers in the form of deals and freebies. National Donut Day happens every year on the first Friday of June. This year it falls on June 6. It's way more than just an excuse for a sugar rush! Here's the sweet backstory: It started way back in 1938. The Salvation Army created it. Their goal was twofold. First, they wanted to honor some amazing women. These volunteers were called the "Donut Lassies". During World War I (around 1917), these brave women traveled to France. They supported American soldiers fighting near the front lines. Conditions were incredibly tough. Supplies were super limited. But the Lassies wanted to lift spirits. They got clever! Using basic ingredients (flour, sugar, lard, baking powder) and soldier helmets as makeshift pans, they started frying donuts. Imagine that! These simple, fresh donuts became a huge hit. They provided more than calories. So, National Donut Day primarily honors these women's courage and compassion. It also remembers their simple act of kindness under fire, and the Salvation Army also uses the day to raise funds for their ongoing charitable work. Today, it's become a fun food holiday too, obviously! Many doughnut shops give away freebies. But the real heart of the day remains that tribute to the Donut Lassies and their WWI service. According to USA Today, there is a free donut deal at Dunkin' for National Donut Day 2025. You can get a free donut with any beverage purchase at participating Dunkin' locations nationwide in the US. However, there are certain terms and conditions applicable for availing the deal. Then comes Krispy Kreme, offering one free donut to all customers with no purchase necessary on June 6. Moreover, if you want to have a mega donut treat, avail a dozen Original Glazed Doughnuts for just $2 when you buy any other dozen at the usual price here. At Duck Donuts, you can get a free cinnamon sugar donut, with no purchase required at all on this occasion. However, the purchase needs to be made in-store only. Other outlets offering some sweet deals this June 6 is Casey's, Fry the Coop, Graeter's, Honey Dew, Lidl, and more.

Tuljapur temple to resume distribution of prasad with Chitale Bandhu laddoos
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: After a temporary halt, devotees visiting the revered Tulja Bhavani temple in Dharashiv district will soon receive laddoos as prasad, with Pune-based Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale roped in for preparation and supply. The decision comes as part of a renewed focus on ensuring purity and quality in religious offerings. Confirming the development, Dharashiv collector Keerthi Kiran Pujar told TOI, "The prasad in the form of laddoos will be prepared by Pune's famous Chitale Bandhu." He clarified that the sweet-maker is charging close to Rs 29 for 50g of laddoos, while the temple trust will be charging devotees Rs 30 only. The Tulja Bhavani temple trust stopped distributing prasad some time ago after receiving several complaints regarding its quality. In a significant policy shift, the trust floated tenders in Sept 2024, inviting reputed firms to take over prasad preparation. This move was prompted by heightened concerns nationwide, particularly after allegations of the use of animal fat and fish oil in the prasad served at the Tirupati Balaji temple created a stir among devotees. Chitale Bandhu, known for its high standards in sweet preparation, was selected through a transparent bidding process. The Tulja Bhavani temple is one of Maharashtra's most important religious destinations. It is counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas in India and draws lakhs of pilgrims every year. The temple also holds a special place in Maratha history, with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj known to be a devout follower of the goddess. Officials said prasad distribution is likely to resume once the necessary logistics and packaging arrangements are finalised. The prasad will be made using pure ghee and traditional ingredients, aligning with the temple's cultural and spiritual heritage.
