Gautam Gambhir Faces Tough Questions Ahead Of Shubman Gill-Led India's Opening Test vs England

NDTV20 hours ago

As India-England first Test draws closer, the Asian giants are left with plenty of questions to answer as they battle demons following a string of poor showings at home/away and retirements of some of their biggest superstars. India's first Test against England at Leeds from June 20 will mark the start of a new era under newly-appointed captain Shubman Gill, as he aims to lead a new-look team to glory following the retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Tests and Ravichandran Ashwin from international cricket as a whole. There are some questions they need to answer, some problems left unaddressed:
Who takes the burden of the crown at number four?
For Team India, atleast, the number four spot is not a regular position. For long, it was occupied by legends like Sachin Tendulkar (13,492 runs in 177 Tests at an average of 54.40, with 44 centuries) and Virat Kohli (7,564 runs in 98 Tests at an average of 56.88, with 26 centuries). Rohit Sharma's top-order replacement looks clear, in the form of KL Rahul.
There have been calls so far that Gill should take the number four spot. Though he succeeded at number three spot at home with three centuries and three fifties, he has been abysmal away from home. Even Karun Nair, who has returned to the national side after eight years, young Sai Sudharsan or in a highly left-field call, Dhruv Jurel, could become India's number four, as per Wisden.
Gill and head coach stayed tight-lipped about the batting order during the pre-departure presser, saying that a call would be taken only after reaching the UK.
Five bowlers or less?
During the Kohli captaincy era, the onus was on the main batters to do the talking and no cushion was given to them in the form of all-rounders. Five specialist bowlers were played, prioritising picking up 20 wickets at any cost, home or away, even if the batting line-up looked less deep.
The captain-coach duo of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid more or less continued with this. But there was some slight shift during Gautam Gambhir's tenure, particularly in Australia, when three specialist bowlers were played with three all-rounders. The idea to provide variety and depth was great, but it led to over-reliance on Jasprit Bumrah, as India lost the series 3-1 and also lost Bumrah to an injury ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy.
Ahead of the England Tests, India do not have a perfect number eight. With Ravindra Jadeja playing at number seven, one of Shardul Thakur (331 runs in 11 Tests with four fifties and 31 wickets at an average of 28.38) or Nitish Kumar Reddy (298 runs in five Tests with a century and five wickets at an average of 38.00) could play at number eight to improve batting depth. But it would lead to some compromises with the bowling. It looks interesting where India would go.
What does the lower-order look like?
While India grapples with question of a proper top-order or their bowling attack, another question is, what would the number six, seven and eight would look like. Jadeja looks a certainty for number seven. But if India play Kuldeep Yadav as their spinner, as suggested by former Indian cricketer Sanjay Bangar, Nitish Kumar would be the one playing as an all-rounder and could bat at number seven, having batted there in Australia.
Number six is a spot left open ever since KL Rahul has moved up the top. Dhruv Jurel has been on a hot-streak as of late, with half-centuries against Australia A and England Lions away from home. Sai Sudharan has notably, batted at number six as well. Nitish could also play at number six.
At number eight, Shardul gives India a bit as a batter and is a solid pacer as well. But this spot is one too high for Kuldeep or any fourth quick. Reddy could drop down there, having some experience at this position too. Washington Sundar could also feature as a solid bat at number eight, though the quality of his spin bowling is not high as Jadeja and Kuldeep.
India played Nitish, Kumar and Sundar in Australia as all-round options, will India continue with it?
Who will be the third pacer?
Two of India's pacers, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, are more than confirmed to play, but Mohammed Shami is not in the squad and could have walked in as third.
With a Purple Cap-winning season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Prasidh Krishna looks a great option, having put in some solid contributions during tour to Australia, taking six wickets in one match at Sydney, three-fers in each innings.
Arshdeep Singh, India's leading wicket-taker in T20Is, gives India a left-arm pace variation, while Shardul gives India some batting depth. Akash Deep was solid against England at home, but unlucky against Australia away from home. He has barely had any game time in months due to injury and did not play India A games against England Lions. His game time came during the IPL for Lucknow Super Giants, taking three wickets in six games.
Harshit Rana, Anshul Kamboj and Mukesh Kumar are pacers from the India A team who are staying behind with the main squad. Kamboj is an interesting option, a canny, restrictive pacer who can bat as well, having made a fifty against England Lions in second game.
The series will be held from June to August 2025, with matches scheduled at Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester.
India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

Ex India Cricketer Feels England Tests 'Excellent Opportunity For Young Team'

Last Updated: Venkatapathy Raju feels the series against England will be a crucial test for the young Indian team. Former India left-arm spinner Venkatapathy Raju believes that the upcoming five-match Test series against England, beginning in Leeds on June 20, offers a significant opportunity for a young Indian team to establish themselves and later confidently compete against any team worldwide. With experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli moving on from Test cricket, the relatively inexperienced Indian batting line-up faces a formidable challenge in England, marking the start of their 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. In the current squad, only KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja have scored Test centuries in England. 'People always say to take advantage of home conditions, but there have been many upsets, such as India losing to New Zealand at home. This shows anything can change at any time. This is a very young Indian team with good balance. 'The England team also has a relatively new bowling attack, with James Anderson retiring and some players injured. We have a few experienced batters in the Indian team who can handle that bowling, making it an evenly matched series. 'England has never reached the finals of the World Test Championship and is keen on winning more games. Five Test matches provide an excellent opportunity for this young Indian team to settle and challenge any team globally, aiming for the next WTC edition," Raju told IANS on Sunday. With Yashasvi Jaiswal, B Sai Sudharsan, and Dhruv Jurel on their first England tour, and Karun Nair making a comeback, while captain Shubman Gill is yet to prove his consistency in overseas conditions, India faces the task of ensuring a smooth transition. 'We need to give the team enough time to settle. We were used to seeing senior players like Rohit, Virat, and Ashwin, who have served India for over 15 years. Naturally, any team will miss such experienced players, but it also gives new players a chance. 'Everyone dreams of playing for their country, and Test cricket is the ultimate goal. It's up to players like Sai Sudharsan to establish themselves if given the opportunity. People already speak highly of him. 'Karun Nair, who scored a triple century but then lost his way, has performed well in domestic cricket to make a comeback. The selection committee should be congratulated for showing faith in him. The competition within the team looks healthy, and it's up to the players to make the most of this opportunity and become good Test cricketers," Raju added. Raju also praised the balanced combination of youth and experience in the bowling line-up. 'We have Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj, and Shardul Thakur, who were successful in the last England tour. Thakur fits in as an all-rounder. 'Nitish Reddy can also become a good all-rounder, having shown his batting capabilities. However, he needs to take on more bowling workload. Arshdeep adds variety to our bowling," Raju noted. Raju highlighted that England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir could be a surprise package for the Indian batters. Bashir achieved career-best figures of 6-81 in the second innings, contributing to England's victory over Zimbabwe by an innings and 45 runs in a one-off Test at Trent Bridge. Bashir, who debuted against India in Visakhapatnam last year, has taken four five-wicket hauls in 16 matches, with a total of 58 wickets. 'India has not been tested by any England Lions spinner in recent games. Bashir's height and consistency have been impressive. 'He knows the conditions well and has been a match-winner for England in spin bowling. His field placements have been brilliant, and he gets extra bounce with a nagging line similar to Nathan Lyon. He could be a surprise for the England team, as Indian batters have struggled against quality spin recently. 'Indian batters rarely play domestic cricket on turning pitches due to restrictions, favouring green tops in India. So, England players might struggle against Kuldeep and Ravindra Jadeja, but we should not overlook Bashir's potential impact against India," Raju concluded.

Shubman Gill gets vote of confidence as captain days ahead of England series: ‘He has been in discussions with Rohit…'

The transition is here and a new-look Indian side is gearing up for the challenge of playing against England in the five-match series, beginning June 20 in Headingley, Leeds. Shubman Gill is all set to take charge of the side following the retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin. Rishabh Pant will serve as Gill's deputy and all eyes are on Gill on how he leads from the front in the series against Ben Stokes and co. Ahead of the first Test against England, Kuldeep Yadav spoke to reporters on Sunday, and it was then that he gave a glowing review of Gill, saying he could not wait to play under his leadership in the longest format. Just days before the squad announcement for the England series, Rohit and Virat announced their Test retirements. The selectors have now named Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair, and Abhimanyu Easwaran to the jumbo 18-member squad. Shubman Gill recently led the Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2025 playoffs. However, his side lost the Eliminator against the Mumbai Indians in Mullanpur. One needs to see how the right-handed batter leads in the longest format. Gill is yet to set the stage on fire with the bat in overseas Tests so the England tour is expected to challenge him in all aspects. "As you have seen, Shubman knows how to lead the team. He has worked under a lot of seniors as well. For the last couple of years, he has been in a lot of discussions with Rohit Bhai. Not only in ODI but also in Tests. I am sure he has learnt a lot," Kuldeep said. "As a leader, he is very motivated. The way he thinks is very important. He has helped the team a lot. In the last 3-4 sessions, I have seen the qualities of the leadership group. I have seen that in Shubman as well. He is ready to lead the team," he added. He is yet to score a century in the SENA countries. It needs to be seen whether he sticks to his old No.3 slot or whether he drops a slot to a position that Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli made their own. The Shubman Gill-led side are currently playing an intra-squad match against India A in Beckenham. Kuldeep Yadav spoke to reporters midway through Day 3 of the ongoing contest. Speaking about the upcoming England series which will be played across Headingley, Birmingham, Lord's, Manchester and the Oval, Kuldeep said, 'When there are no seniors, there is always a shortage. The players like Virat and Rohit, who have done so much for the team. Their importance will always be there. It is an opportunity for the youngsters to perform well. They have a chance to settle in the team.' 'That is very important. I am sure everyone feels their absence. But the youngsters look very excited. They are ready for it,' he added. Kuldeep Yadav also said that he is missing the presence of Ravichandran Ashwin after the latter retired from international cricket in December 2024 midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. 'I am spending a lot of time with Ravindra Jadeja. He is very important to me as a spinner. I have learnt a lot from him. Obviously, I am missing Ashwin Bhai. But I am lucky to have Jaddu bhai around. I am enjoying everything so far,' he added.

India women's hockey team squanders lead, suffers second consecutive loss against Australia in FIH Pro League

The Indian women's hockey team fought on equal terms against Australia but conceded a last-minute goal to lose 1-2 in its FIH Pro League match in London on Sunday. This was India's second consecutive defeat to the same opponents as they had lost 2-3 on Friday. India took the lead in the third minute through a field goal from Vaishnavi Phalke and they were 1-0 up at half-time. But Australia restored parity in the 37th minute through Amy Lawton. The match was heading towards a draw but Lexie Pickering scored the winner from a penalty-corner variation in the 60th minute to break Indian hearts. India made a bright start to the game by winning three back-to-back penalty corners in the very first minute, adding pressure on the Australian backline. India carried on its momentum and scored the opening goal as early as the third minute to take charge of the match. Navneet Kaur carried the ball forward and passed it to Sharmila Devi to the left. Devi played it to the far post for Vaishnavi to deflect the ball into the net. India continued to pile on the pressure as Navneet came close to extending the lead but narrowly missed the target. With 34 seconds left on the clock, Australia converted a penalty corner to complete their comeback in the match. Australia improved its performance in the second quarter and started creating goal-scoring chances. Both sides exchanged possession and battled it out in the midfield but they couldn't be separated in the second quarter as India headed into the second half with a goal in hand. Australia was more dominant in the third quarter and caused troubles for the Indian defence. Greta Hayes came teasingly close to scoring a goal as she struck a shot towards an empty net. However, the ball was accidentally stopped by her own teammate. In the 37th minute, Australia was on the attack again and Lawton managed to find the equaliser through a brilliant field goal. Lawton did well to win the ball from an India defender and then unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the circle, past the keeper into the bottom right corner. In the fourth and final quarter, India earned a penalty corner but the Australian keeper was up to the task to keep her side in the contest. In the 54th minute, India won four penalty corners in a row but it failed to find the net. In its third attempt, India was unlucky not to take the lead. Neha fired a shot which took a deflection and struck the post. With 34 seconds left on the clock, Australia converted a penalty corner to complete its comeback in the match. Tatum Stewart played the perfect pass to Pickering who deflected the ball into the net to hand Australia all three points. India next faces Argentina in London on Tuesday.
