Flyers celebrate 40th anniversary of Wembley win

A weekend of events to mark the 40th anniversary of Fife Flyers' British Championship win at Wembley is under way.
The highlight is a reunion of the 1985 team at a special show at Rothes Halls, Glenrothes, on Friday, May 2 for a night of memories and stories from the dressing-room.
It is the single biggest hockey event staged in Fife for many years, and the last remaining tickets are available from the box office or at https://www.onfife.com/event/fife-flyers-1985-british-championship-40th-anniversary-event-ra23/
The players who triumphed at Wembley will be reunited on stage with Canadian stars Ron Plumb, Danny Brown and Dave Stoyanovich who are in town ahead of the big show which promises to be packed with laughter and emotion.
All proceed from the events go to CHAS – Flyers' official charity partner – and Maggie's Cancer Care Centre in Kirkcaldy.
Also an exhibition celebrating one of the greatest teams in Fife Flyers' history has opened at Kirkcaldy Galleries.
It celebrates one of the greatest moments in the club's near 90-year history and the exhibition runs until June 8 and is free to view.
It is packed with memorabilia donated by players and fans that will spark recollections of great days from the past.
On display are old team jerseys and jackets, as well as the watches the players received instead of medals at that 1985 triumph at Wembley Arena in London. There are also archive videos which show clips from landmark games that season.
The exhibition has an informal opening on Saturday morning with Provost Jim Leishman attending, but fans are welcome to view it at any time.
It was curated by Alan Westwater, Flyers' former programme editor, and lifelong fan. He is part of the team at the helm of the celebrations which also includes John Ross, Iain Anderson and Joe Rowbotham, former assistant team manager of the Wembley team, and Allan Crow, editor of the Fife Free Press.

Paddy Power offer: Bet £5 on Epsom Derby and get £30 free bets

Paddy Power is offering new customers £30 in free bets when they bet on the Epsom Oaks using promo code YSKAST Paddy Power is no stranger to the big horse racing action and the Epsom Oaks will be a big part of their calendar especially with the new customer offer they on. Right now, new customers can enjoy £30 in free bets when they sign-up and bet £5 on the Epsom Oaks this week. The Oaks, a distinguished Group 1 flat race for three-year-old fillies, stands as a testament to the rich tradition of British horse racing. Held at Epsom and managed by the Jockey Club, this race spans an arduous distance of one mile, four furlongs, and six yards. Since its first run in 1779, when Bridget claimed victory, The Oaks has firmly established itself as a highlight of the racing calendar. As one of the five annual Classic races, The Oaks holds the honour of being the second oldest, with only the St Leger preceding it. Intriguingly, it predates even the renowned Derby by a year, enhancing its historical significance. The origins of The Oaks trace back to a gathering in 1778 at an estate near Epsom Downs. It was here that the idea for this iconic race was conceived, lending the race its name. Lord Derby, a pivotal figure in racing history who hosted this gathering, also owned Bridget, the filly who won the inaugural race. Throughout its storied history, The Oaks has been the stage for many unforgettable performances. One standout moment came in 2017 when Enable stormed to victory. Her win at The Oaks was just the beginning of an extraordinary career that saw her triumph in other major races such as the Irish Oaks, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Yorkshire Oaks, and the illustrious Prix De L'Arc de Triomphe. Which bookies are offering Free Bets ahead of the 2025 Epsom Derby

The bookies will be busy this weekend with two Classics in the horse racing flats season including the Epsom Derby This weekend, the spotlight will be firmly on Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey as the Derby Festival unfolds over two days, culminating in the illustrious Epsom Derby. This race, steeped in tradition and prestige, has long been a hallmark of British flat racing, shaping the careers of future champions and serving as a pivotal test for potential stallions. This year's event promises to add another fascinating chapter to its rich history. Aidan O'Brien, a seasoned master with ten Derby wins under his belt, is once again in the mix with a strong lineup. Among his contenders is The Lion In Winter, whose odds have drifted following a lacklustre run in the Dante Stakes. Nonetheless, Delacroix stands out from O'Brien's stable, having captured victories in both the Ballysax and Derby Trials, and is likely to be partnered by jockey Ryan Moore. Ruling Court is another notable contender, aiming to replicate Camelot's 2012 feat by winning both the 2000 Guineas and the Derby. Adding to the intrigue is Pride Of Arras, who has emerged as a formidable challenger after an impressive showing in the Dante. Despite these strong entries, questions linger about the stamina of several top contenders, and with no clear standout like last year's City Of Troy, this year's Derby is wide open. This unpredictability enhances the anticipation for what promises to be an exhilarating edition of this iconic race. Airdrie have point to prove after last season's relegation scare, says Frizzell

The Diamonds had a nightmare campaign last term Airdrie captain Adam Frizzell knows the spotlight will be on his team this season, and admits they have a point to prove after their play-off scrap. But the former Killie midfielder reckons with a bit of recruitment the Diamonds will be riding high in next season's Championship. ‌ Frizzell says it's an interesting league, with St Johnstone and Ross County coming down from the Premiership and Arbroath promoted from League One. ‌ But he says Airdrie finished the season strongly enough that they can look ahead with confidence. Frizzell said: 'St Johnstone and Ross County will be two teams that will be fancying themselves to win it, and it's very exciting. 'There are a few teams that it will be interesting to see how they pan out this year, and I think everyone will be looking at us as one of those teams as well, coming back off the back of a poor season, by our standards. 'But I think we finished the season strong, getting through the play-offs was massive for us, and the boys should take a good bit of confidence, going into the pre-season and tackling the Championship next season.' When asked if Airdrie have a point to prove, Frizzell said: 'Definitely. A lot of people had us written off. Whatever happened with Hamilton happened, and we can't do anything about that, but we took advantage of that and managed to stay in the division. 'We still did incredible to claw ourselves back into a position where Hamilton's deduction had any bearing on us – people forget we had five points at the turn of the year. ‌ 'We finished the season well, and you just need to look to take that into next season, it's all you can do.' Frizzell says recruitment is key for Airdrie this summer. He added: 'I think we need a wee bit, but not much. ‌ 'I think a couple of good additions, rather than loads of different ones. 'There was a big turnover last season and there will probably be similar this year, but not on as big a scale. 'With a couple of additions we'll be good, and definitely pushing in the right side of the table. 'I think this season will be very good for us, the boys will have learned a lot. 'We managed to come through it unscathed in the end, which is brilliant, and it's a very young team with a lot of learning to do. 'But with a couple of good additions, and the core we have already, I think it's an exciting year ahead for us, really.'
