
‘Our people were so innovative': Māori art celebrated in landmark book
A new landmark book celebrating Māori art has clocked up a couple of impressive firsts: not only is it the most comprehensive account of creative work by Indigenous New Zealanders ever published, it is also the first wide-ranging art history written entirely by Māori scholars.
Spanning 600 pages and including more than 500 images, Toi Te Mana: An Indigenous history of Māori art was written over 12 years by University of Auckland scholars Ngarino Ellis, Deidre Brown and the late Jonathan Mane-Wheoki.
At the heart of its approach is the celebration of Māori art across a diverse range of mediums.
'Our people were so productive, so innovative … one thing we wanted to do is to challenge the whole idea that there was just one style of [Māori art],' Ellis says.
The book traverses Māori creativity across time and locations – from ancient ocean-voyaging waka (canoe) to intricately carved treasure boxes held in international museums, painting and street art, digital film, protest flags and a Venice Biennale award-winning installation. The book also highlights forgotten artists and overlooked mediums such as Māori architecture.
'Our starting point was: what are we most interested in and what do we want our people to know about our history and our art?' Ellis says.
The story of Māori art has often been ignored, or historically been told by – and appropriated by – non-Māori. Not only does the book celebrate the breadth of Māori art and unearth new discoveries in the process, it upends traditional western approaches to art history in favour of one that is Māori.
Prior to this book, there had been no Māori-led approach to writing an art history, says Brown, who in 2019 became the head of the university's architecture school in what is believed to be the first time in the world an Indigenous woman had held such a position.
The authors spent years discussing how the book would be structured to reflect Māori concepts of time – which is cyclical not linear – and how tikanga (customs), whenua (land) and whakapapa (genealogy) would be honoured within the text.
To achieve this, the book is broken into sections, based on the three baskets – or kete - of knowledge, which in Māori legend the god Tāne retrieved from the heavens to bring back for mankind.
The first, te kete-tuatea, the basket of light, might be what some would refer to as customary Māori art, Brown says.
'But we have always been clear that customary Māori art is also contemporary Māori art too – we've got makers from the deep past into the present.'
The second, te kete-tuauri, the basket of darkness or the unknown, 'looks at that time when new materials, new ideas and new people were coming in from other parts of the world and how that both changed and challenged Māori art', Brown says.
And the third, te kete-aronui, the basket of pursuit, 'deals with the contemporary field of Māori art'.
'But where most art history books globally start that conversation in modernism, we felt from an Indigenous perspective modernism isn't necessarily the starting point.'
Rather, the turning point began in the late 19th-early-20th-century social reform movements led by prominent Māori leaders Te Puea Hērangi and Sir Āpirana Ngata, Brown says.
'Māori at that point were thinking about ourselves collectively as Māori,' she says, adding that at that time Indigenous artists were also entering into tertiary education, becoming more urbanised and expanding their practice overseas.
The authors hope the book will serve as a resource for Māori and act as a starting point by which iwi (tribes) can delve into their own art traditions. Further, they hope it adds a voice to a growing number of Indigenous-led art histories around the world.
For many others it will serve as a celebration of Māori art and its makers – one that reveals the many different ways Māori artists are expressing their indigeneity, Ellis says.
'It really is a great time to be Māori and to be a Māori artist.'
Toi Te Mana: An Indigenous history of Māori art will be released by the University of Chicago Press in the US and Australia on 28 February. The University of Auckland Press published it in New Zealand last year

His arrest came after he was accused of using a bottle to cause bodily harm to music producer Abe Diaw during a night out at London's Tape nightclub in Mayfair on February 19, 2023. On May 15 this year, Brown was arrested at the Lowry Hotel in Salford. He had recently jetted into nearby Manchester Airport to rehearse for his upcoming Breezy Bowl XX 20th anniversary tour. The singer has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm. He was initially denied bail and is expected to appear in person at Southwark Crown Court next month. District Judge Joanna Hirst told the court that the charge was too serious to be dealt with at the magistrates ' court. However, the 36-year-old star was later granted bail following a court plea. He was ordered to pay a £5 million security fee to the court. The financial guarantee is to ensure a defendant returns to court and may be forfeited if they breach bail conditions. His lawyer, Grace Forbes, had argued that he was a public figure known worldwide as they pleaded for bail to be granted. As well as his Amsterdam performance, Brown is scheduled to perform in cities across the UK, including Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, London and Cardiff. Despite his arrest, Brown's bail conditions enable him to continue with his scheduled international tour this year, including in the UK later this month and July. Following his release on bail, the American singer took to Instagram to tell his 144million followers: "From the cage to the stage!!! Breezybowl." Brown's bold post was seemingly in reference to the fact his bail conditions allow him to honour his tour commitments and perform across Europe ahead of his court date next month.

No Title (An Experiment) review – Willem Dafoe's return to avant garde theatre is oddly banal
Long before Willem Dafoe became a feted figure of the Hollywood establishment, he was a disrupter, immersed in experimental theatre. On that count, no one can accuse the forces that enlisted Dafoe as Venice Biennale Teatro's artistic director of a cynically celebrity-led appointment. Dafoe's programme expressly reflects the influences and passions that shaped him, not least the Wooster Group, a New York company he co-founded which appears in his Venice lineup. But the risk with this personal nod to the past is that the once-edgy becomes dated experimentalism. That certainly seems the case with this 'experiment', a directorless two-hander in which Dafoe stars alongside Simonetta Solder. Its basis is a series of notes on index cards written by the late American playwright, Richard Foreman – an avant gardist if ever there was one. Dafoe and Solder sit around a table amid a circular mound that is bound by tape, like the cordon at a crime scene. They kick off by drinking a glass of water and smashing it across a heap of broken glass that surrounds them. The suggestion is that the glass has accumulated in an infinitely repeating show, the actors trapped on the island of glass with their index cards. They read them alternately and at quite a pace. Seemingly random thoughts repeat; they are playful, quotidian or profound, and circle around certain themes: time, sleep, shoes. It is less a game of association than a deliberately fragmentary exercise which does not build to a bigger story. Paradoxes crash against each other ('Nasty is nice', 'So tired I woke up', 'Tomorrow comes', 'Tomorrow is yesterday') while homilies turn wonky ('Better never than late', 'Hurt gently', 'Time explains it all'). Dafoe is expressive and relaxed, at least, as well as Solder. 'Language is a bitch,' she says. It sure is here. When the actors switch to speaking in Italian (translated by Matilde Vigna), language really does seem so – for English speakers at least. Is the idea that we, as the audience, begin to create a narrative out of fragments? That the creation of story is irresistible? Whose failure is it if no narrative forms? That question lingers, but in the meantime it is oddly banal. It seems ironic that the title of Dafoe's programme is 'Theatre is body. Body is Theatre'. This feels like conceptual theatre, about ideas not movement, the actors effectively reduced to their voices. In between the index card table tennis is infectiously jazzy music and mischievous polka dot lighting. You hope that Dafoe and Solder will rise and do a jazzy jig. They don't, until taking their final, shimmying bows. As experimental as it may be, it seems old-fashioned in its play with meaning and story, while also hagiographic towards Foreman – a show given over to the reading aloud of his index card scribblings. It calls itself an experiment. It feels more like a puzzle with its dramatic parts, and heart, missing. Part of the Biennale Teatro 2025, which takes place until 15 June. a stunning and powerful production... can't be missed
It's a chilly but beautiful winter's night on Cadigal land as I walk towards the Sydney Opera House. The lights of Vivid Sydney paint the harbour with mesmerising displays, creating the perfect atmosphere in the lead up to seeing Bangarra Dance Theatre 's brand new production, Illume. While Vivid lights up the exterior of the iconic Opera House, Illume sets the stage alight from the inside. An otherworldly spectacle, Illume is a collaboration between Mirning choreographer (and Bangarra's visionary artistic director) Frances Rings and Goolarrgon Bard visual artist Darrell Sibosado. Sibosado, known for his innovative contemporary light installations, lends his talents to the set and stage design in a theatrical experience that pays tribute to the creation stories of the Bard and Jawi people and the cultural hero, Galaloong. As the performance begins, audiences are immediately awestruck by a stunning display of the night sky – the dancers are enveloped by twinkling stars projected onto a sheer screen at the front of the stage and also on the back wall, with yet more lights darting around the stage providing an atmospheric glimmer. Elizabeth Gadsby 's costume design complements this, sparkly black dresses shimmer under the lights, alluding to the pristine beauty of land and sky untouched by environmental pollution. As the story progresses, and with each change in season, the costumes reflect the surroundings; shades of brown, red and beige are worn in the warmer and dry seasons. This attention to detail demonstrates a strong commitment to holistic storytelling. The symbolism woven throughout, by way of the choreography, props and stage design, transports the audience through a journey of Country and spiritualism. Vertical light blocks move up and down while the dancers navigate their bodies around them in a beautiful symbolic display of the spiritual significance of trees in Indigenous cultures. As the dancers travel across the stage, they move through a combination of dance styles, from traditional cultural dance, to contemporary dance and lyrical steps. Rings' stylistic choices expertly utilise the dancers' bodies to create beautiful patterns and shapes, and to mimic natural elements. Throughout the production we see the women dancing together as a united group, followed by the men dancing together; and while these groups remain separate in some scenes, in others they are combined. Rings' use of perspective and height is also successful in creating atmosphere and continuity of the story. As the dancers fall and roll across the stage in sync with one another, it mimics rolling water or wind. As the dancers lift each other up, creating differences in height, we can follow the story of the trees as they grow, sway and react to the elements. The music, composed by Brendon Boney, is also spectacular and, in some scenes, unexpected. While we are treated to percussive beats involving traditional instruments such as clapping sticks, there are also nods to science-fiction. As the show progresses, we start to experience more futuristic music and visuals, including some elements of hip-hop style movements accompanied by more techno-forward scores. The production's prop work also builds off the stunning light display. For example, one memorable scene involves dancers holding large illuminated ropes, twisting them and creating patterns. As a dancer myself, I want to note just how difficult that is to do – the precision required to ensure every dancer arrives at the specific spot on stage at the right moment to produce the shape is something that takes many hours of intricate planning and rehearsals. Yet, the dancers move with such ease and grace that it appears effortless. This ensemble's seamless and impressive transitions are to be highly commended. For me, the most beautiful moment of the whole show would have to be the yarning circle that occurs towards the end. A calm, quiet and seemingly 'simple' moment, this scene is able to convey deep connection with little movement. As a fire steadily burns to the right side of the stage, a group of dancers to the left are huddled together in a yarning circle, a cultural practice undertaken for close connection between mob. As the dancers sit there, under a spotlight, ash gently falls from the sky onto them. The effect is calm and serene. Overall, Illume is a stunning and powerful production. It is evident that an enormous amount of work has gone into this, and the result is a striking show that can't be missed. I highly recommend that you get out to see it.
