Smoke cannons and 'ginga' - the World Sevens kicks off

BBC News22-05-2025

Smoke cannons blasting off behind the goal, live music bursting out from a DJ set during corners and free shirts being thrown to fans at half-time - this was not the usual experience Europe's top female footballers are accustomed to."Carnage. Just chaos," said Manchester United manager Marc Skinner, fresh from his side's 3-2 win over Roma in Portugal. The Women's World Sevens kicked off in Estoril on Wednesday with Manchester United and Manchester City among the eight clubs involved. The new seven-a-side competition has a prize money pool of $5m (£3.76m) - more than what the Women's Champions League winners will earn three days later in Lisbon. With rolling substitutes, no offsides and 15-minute halves, it's a format that brings out flair and creativity, as well as attacking intent.England international Jess Park began lighting things up when she nutmegged a player to earn a corner, prompting the DJ as she prepared the set-piece in Manchester City's opening 4-0 win over Rosengard.United duo Celin Bizet and Grace Clinton took the fun to another level shortly afterwards, chest bumping in celebration after England midfielder Clinton's clever chip drew gasps from the 200-odd fans watching on in the stands.By the time Bayern Munich came on, beating Ajax 4-2, players were full of fun and energy - Norwegian defender Tuva Hansen even whipping off her shirt to celebrate in Chloe Kelly style after scoring a rare goal."I really enjoyed it. I think the Roma players took it a bit more seriously than us! We had loads of fun," said United's Clinton."We've all come here as a team. We didn't really know what to expect. This is what we want to do in training every day. We really embraced it."It's a lot more high-intensity but also free. It's very unpredictable because you don't know where the ball will go. It's more enjoyable I would say."
'I like the ginga - we like these vibes'
Games are being played at the Estadio Antonio Coimbra da Mota - a 5,000-capacity ground in Estoril - but it was transformed for the World Sevens. From 20:30 BST on Saturday, following Estoril men's 4-0 win over Estrela, stands were built, TV cameras put in place and large screens put up.The match schedule was shuffled after United's men reached the Europa League final - which they lost 1-0 to Tottenham on Wednesday - so Skinner's side played earlier at the World Sevens to avoid a clash.Fans initially came in slowly, with little more than 100 watching City's win over Rosengard, but alcoholic drinks were flowing as more came throughout the night, filling a stand on the far side before Paris St-Germain's 2-1 win over Benfica."It is interesting. It is something different. The stadium looks nice," said City fan Leanne Woodall, who travelled out to Estoril.Fan Charlotte Wilkins added: "I play seven-a-side football so I was really excited to see how the professional players did it and the tactics they used."We couldn't find where we needed to go when we first got here, but now we're in, it's really good and there's good vibes so far. It's exciting."Organisers hope to fill the arena on Friday when the semi-finals and final will be played and more fans fly out to Portugal in anticipation of Saturday's Champions League final between Barcelona and Arsenal (17:00 BST).But first impressions from the players were certainly positive."It was so nice, I was really sad it was only one game today, I could play all day like this," said Roma's Hawa Cissoko."I think we took the game a bit more seriously at the beginning than Manchester United, they arrived on the pitch really [relaxed]. "Them doing this made me think 'we are here to have fun'. We were doing this when we were kids. It makes me feel a bit like [I did] 10 years ago. That's so nice."Manchester City interim manager Nick Cushing said the style of football was how they "believe the game should be played".Brazil forward Kerolin added: "I liked a lot the music. In Portugal the weather is really nice so everyone is like 'OK, we like these vibes'. "Of course we want to win and get some money! But it's a little bit Brazilian I think. I like the ginga [an informal Brazilian term for expression of creativity with agility and trickery]."I want to get back those things and be a little bit brave. Today I was a little bit unsure - but it will come."
'Good opportunity to show Swedish football'
Clubs' participation in the tournament has been controversial, with some questioning the timing and the risk of injury with Euro 2025 starting on 2 July.Rosengard face BK Hacken in the Swedish league on Saturday (14:00 BST) but travelled to Estoril to take part."We had some reactions in Sweden, that we came here, because we have a game," said Rosengard midfielder Emelia Larsson."For us, it's like taking a break from all of it. You miss a training week, but if you put that aside, I think it's just really fun to be here. "It's a good opportunity to show ourselves and show Swedish football."Manager Joel Kjetselberg said it was good practise to prepare for Champions League football, for which they would travel midweek, in between weekend matches.City held around five training sessions to prepare for the World Sevens, while United had one. "We would only be doing this in training all week anyway," said United's Clinton."If we were going into the next England camp, we would all have just been doing small-sided games anyway. "This is probably a better outcome and gives us more fitness."

Shocking moment Love Island star Shakira brands new bombshell Yasmin a 't***' as tensions flare while they secretly watch the boys flirt with THREE new girls

The Love Island girls were thrown into a frenzy on Friday night as tensions flared while they watched the boys meet the series' three latest bombshells. After Blu Chegini became the second islander to be dumped from the Majorca villa, the newly-coupled-up boys and single man Shea Mannings were afforded a boys' night away. But after the six lads started discussing their new romances, they were interrupted by three new girls - teaching assistant Malisha, 24, commercial banking executive Yasmin, 24, and insurance development executive Emily, 24. In another major shock, the girls back in the villa were watching exactly what the boys were getting up to on a secret camera for the first time in Love Island history. Unaware the girls were watching on, the bombshells didn't shy away from flirting with the boys, and Yasmin even had some choice words about some of the existing couples - prompting a fuming reaction back in the villa. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Making her opinions clear, Yasmin insisted it was 'bulls***' that American Islander Toni would consider a move to the UK, before saying Ben 'crawled back' to Shakira and criticising Tommy for being 'too comfortable' with Meg. And the girls were unimpressed with her brazen remarks as Shakira shockingly branded her a 't***' while Meg also referred to one of the bombshells as a 'b***h' as tensions flared before they even met the newbies. Making their bombshell arrival, 'serial flirter' Emily sat down herself next to Conor, while Malisha was next to Dejon and Yasmin sat by Tommy as they wasted no time getting to know the boys. 'Tell us what your situation is in the villa at the moment,' Yasmin said. With the lads blissfully ignorant of the fact they are being watched, they didn't hold back with their answers, leaving the ladies back in the villa in shock. As the conversation moved on to Conor, he answered: 'I'm talking to Toni, she's American, I know that's a bit of a thing but she said she'd be happy to come (to Ireland).' Holding nothing back, Yasmin responded: 'Bull****,' much to the dismay of the girls back in the villa. Things went from bad to worse for Toni as Conor later admitted that Emily is exactly his type. The conversation then moved on to Ben, who explained that after a couple of days away from Shakira, they had coupled up once again - with Yasmin cheekily quipping: 'Oh so you went crawling back to her did you?' Moments later, Yasmin turned her attention to Tommy, who is currently coupled up with Irish girl Meg. 'I'm not singling you out when I say this, but do you think you're too comfortable with Meg at the moment?' the 24-year-old asked. The question prompted an angry response from Shakira watching on poolside, who cried: 'You know what, I was all for being nice to the bombshells but she seems like a bit of a t***!' The bombshells' flirty exchange with the lads also saw Dejon and Tommy - who seem happily coupled up - admit the new girls have 'made things interesting' before the three new girls picked a boy each to have a 'private chat' with. Yasmin chose Harry, who has ruffled feathers since entering the villa on day one, with Emily taking Irishman Conor and Malisha choosing Dejon as the episode reached its climax. Before series 12 began on Monday, ITV producers promised the most dramatic series yet. After Sophie Lee became the first islander to be dumped from the villa, new lads Remell and Shea became this series' first male bombshells. Newbie Shea Mannings and Blu Chegini were left single and a shock text revealed that they would have to pick which of them would go home in a show first Remell, who quickly found a spark with Scottish girl Alima, raised eyebrows moments after his arrival as he shockingly admitted to bedding five girls in one night. It came before Blu Chegini became the first boy to be dumped after brutally being voted off by his castmates. He and Shea had been left single after the latest recoupling, with a shock text revealing they would have to pick which of them would go home in a show first. With the pair left fuming, Blu was quick to state, 'I ain't f***ing leaving', with Shea also making it clear he wasn't willing to leave, before they forced their co-stars to make the call. However after giving the vote up to their fellow islanders, Blu ultimately received the fewest votes and left the villa. Love Island next airs on Sunday June 16 at 9pm on ITVX and ITV2. David Beckham ‘immensely proud' of knighthood in King's Birthday Honours

Former England captain David Beckham said he is 'immensely proud' to have been given a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours. The sports star, who celebrated his 50th birthday last month, is being honoured for services to sport and charity. Sir David said in a statement to the PA news agency: 'Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour. 'To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true. 'Off the pitch I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation. 'I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment. It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I'm immensely proud and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.' Sir David married his wife Victoria in 1999 and the couple share four children together – Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper. He had been set on becoming a professional footballer as a child and as a teenager he joined Manchester United as a trainee, forming part of the class of '92 that won the FA Youth Cup, along with Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville. The sports star from north east London made his Premier League debut for United in 1995 and was part of the team that earned a dramatic Champions League final victory in 1999 when they beat Bayern Munich with two late goals. In total he scored 85 goals and collected honours including six Premier League titles and two FA Cups as a footballer, before retiring from the sport in 2013. Alongside his football career Sir David has supported a number of charity causes and launched a fundraising appeal for Unicef in April ahead of his milestone 50th birthday. He has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for humanitarian aid organisation Unicef since 2005 and is a founding member of the charity Malaria No More UK's leadership council. Philip Goodwin, Unicef UK chief executive said: 'We're so thrilled that our Unicef Goodwill Ambassador, David Beckham, has been awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours. 'David Beckham has done an incredible amount to advocate for children's rights over the last 20 years. 'He became a Goodwill Ambassador in 2005 and launched 7: The David Beckham Unicef Fund in 2015 – with the goal of helping children around the world, especially girls, break down barriers including bullying, violence, child marriage and missed education. 'He's travelled extensively to see Unicef's work and used his profile to raise awareness, as well as support our flagship fundraising campaign Soccer Aid for Unicef and launch global fundraising appeals.' Last year the former sports star, who has described himself as a 'huge Royalist', was named an ambassador for the King's Foundation, an educational charity established by the King in 1990. In February Sir David appeared in a video helping to launch the hunt for '35 under 35', a network of influencers who can fly the flag for the charity which reflects Charles' vision. He is also known for his stylish clothing choices, and in 1998 was named most stylish man of the year by GQ magazine and he has modelled for the likes of H&M, Armani and Boss. In 2018 he was appointed Ambassadorial President of the British Fashion Council where he assisted the BFC in its search for young British talent from all backgrounds. His wife, Victoria, turned her hand to fashion designing after her time in the Spice Girls and Sir David and their four children are often spotted at her shows. Sir David is currently a part-owner of MLS side Inter Miami, and is also the co-founder of Studio 99, the production company behind the hit Netflix series Beckham.
