Capitol Modern exhibits fashion from inaugural MOD Gala

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaiʻi had its own version of the Met Gala following Capital Modern's first-ever MOD Gala.
The signature fundraiser captured everything fashion, from looking at pictures, sharing stories and experiencing the art exhibit, which will live on through the middle of June.

To find out more about that, we are here with the President of the Friends of Capitol Modern, Jonathan Johnson.
What was so significant about this MOD Gala and how successful to you was it?
'MOD Gala was the inaugural fundraiser for the Friends of Capitol Modern so we celebrated fashion and food, actually indigenous food and artists, and gave them the them of Botanical Rhapsody: A Floral Odyssey,' said Johnson.
And does that mean, Botanical Rhapsody?
'That is what we look to all of the artists to tell us and to show through their work what that meant, so we kind of left it wide open,' says Johnson.
There were 8 that were part of the fashion part, but again, there were also music and food and other expressions of art.
We are here with Amos Kotomori who has created some amazing pieces.
'Thank you very much for being here and helping promote the arts. I can't imagine Hawaiʻi without any of the arts and it was an opportunity for eight artists and designers to express themselves and each of us had our own story,' said Kotomori.

'So, like this outfit here is really, I entitled it 'Paradise Chained.' It is made out of chains and rhinestones and the flowers were made in Bali and it was traditionally used for weddings, for uniting. And so what happened was that the question I asked was 'what did we do to sell paradise? What have we done?' So, this was the hula skirt,' said Kotomori.
For you as an artist, I am really interested in hearing each artist's opinion and answer to where do you get your inspiration and how do you even come up with these types of concepts?
'Inspiration comes in so many forms,' said Kotomori.
'For me, sometimes it's food, it's the people. I am looking at a puddle and there is an oil spill on it. But this one is about kanzashi and it's about the flowers that fall to the ground and how the petals have their moment of beauty and they fall. But they still survive and the feathers is about taking flight. The piece under, I actually hand-sew it all and so it was fun to do.'
This will be taking us through the middle of June, but Jonathan, you have a nice surprise to share?
'We do. If you missed this MOD Gala, mark your calendar for May 2, 2026, and we will be announcing the next theme in July,' said Johnson.

HONOLULU (KHON2) — This upcoming week is 'Maui Week,' which KHON2 and Nexstar television partners across the country are celebrating to showcase the beauty of they Valley Isle. '[Maui Week] represents an opportunity for us to share our culture, to share the beautiful ʻāina, but to let people see us in all of our glory,' Gov. Josh Green said. Kaiser purchases Maui News building, newspaper to move out A total of 15 stations across the country are participating in highlighting the island, supported by Maui hotels and Hawaiian Airlines. Maui has plenty of aloha spirit to go around, with lots of lively culture and food, but the true centerpiece of the island is the people who work to preserve the island and its identity.'This collaboration is a chance to share what makes Maui truly unique—through the warmth of our people and the richness of our culture,' said Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen in an interview with Living808. Maui Week will feature cultural showcases such as hula, a sacred performance art, and a passion of Maui County First Lady Kaʻihi Bissen. 'Hula is more than movement—it's a living story passed down through generations,' she said. 'It's powerful to see our hotels celebrating and sharing that story with authenticity.' Dakota Johnson Proves a Little Black Dress Can Still Be the Most Fabulous Choice

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Dakota Johnson looked electric las night as she made her entrance at an event celebrating Italian jewelry brand Roberto Coin in New York City. The actor was spotted walking into Cipriani, looking ultra-glamorous in a strapless black draped gown that was pulled up at the center and flowed down to the sides. The slinky maxi dress was both easy and so elevated for a night out in the city. Johnson styled the piece with Ferragamo's pointy black Eva pumps with slanted stiletto heels, and a magnificent diamond necklace from Roberto Coin. The necklace adorned her decolletage like a floral lace collar, but with white diamonds instead. It was dotted with blue heart-shaped sapphires. To go with the necklace, the Am I OK? star also slipped on some blue cocktail rings from the jeweler. She completed her effortlessly sophisticated look with a dark smoky eye and a bronze lip. Johnson also wore a little black dress earlier this month, to walk the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. Then, she accessorized even more minimally, styling it only with strappy heels and tiny diamond earrings—plus a pretty side braid. Johnson served as the face of Roberto Coin's latest campaign, 'The Art of Dreaming.' In a video, she is seen standing before stunning views around Venice in several of the jewelry label's gleaming new creations. 'Today a vision comes true with the new 'The Art of Dreaming' advertising campaign by Roberto Coin featuring a stellar @dakotajohnson. Venice has never been so enchanting,' the brand wrote on Instagram alongside the clip.
