Nasi kandar restaurant shut down over squalid conditions

BUTTERWORTH: A nasi kandar restaurant here has been ordered to close immediately for conducting business in an extremely unhygienic environment during an operation codenamed "Op Bersepadu", carried out by the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP).
The local council said the exercise conducted yesterday was led by the MBSP Department of Health Services, in collaboration with the MBSP Enforcement Directorate and the North Seberang Perai District Health Office (PKD).
"Among the actions taken was the immediate closure of the premises under the Food Act 1983, issued by the North Seberang Perai PKD after it was found that the cleanliness level of the premises was at a concerning level.
"In addition, four compounds amounting to RM4,000 and two notices for offences of placing obstructions in public areas and failing to produce valid work visas for foreign workers were also issued to the restaurant owner," it said in a statement on Facebook.
It said that the operation indicates the authorities' full commitment to ensuring cleanliness, safety, and legal compliance at food premises is upheld to the highest standard.
"Furthermore, all food premises operators are urged to consistently comply with relevant laws and ensure their premises remain clean, safe, and in line with established standards for the wellbeing of the community," it added.

Brunei employer fined RM115,000 for unpaid wages to a domestic helper since 2008

Image from The Star/Asia News Network BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): A local man was ordered to pay a total fine of BND35,200 (RM115,000) or face 98 weeks' imprisonment by the Magistrate's Court for failing to pay his domestic helper's salary since 2008. 59-year-old Awang Aji bin Eya pleaded guilty to 98 charges before Magistrate Syaffina Shahif on May 21. The court imposed a BND200 fine for each of the first 20 charges, in default one week's imprisonment for each, and a BND400 fine for each of the remaining 78 charges, also in default one week's imprisonment for each. The first 20 charges were framed under the now-repealed Section 108(1) of the former Labour Act, punishable under Section 120(b) of the same Act, for offences committed before September 3, 2009. The remaining 78 charges were under Section 39(1) of the Employment Order, carrying penalties under Section 148 of the same legislation. The case involved the non-payment of the domestic helper's wages from 2008, despite being employed since 2000. The court, invoking Section 130 of the Labour Act and Section 140 of the Employment Order, further ordered that BND20,433 of the fine be paid to the domestic helper, representing the total sum of unpaid wages owed. The defendant was given until February 3, 2026, to make full payment, failing which he will have to serve the default custodial sentence of 98 weeks' imprisonment. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN

Mara gives RM1,000 aid to UPSI bus crash victims

KUALA LUMPUR: The Mara Education Foundation (Yayasan Pelajaran Mara) has provided RM1,000 emergency aid to each Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student involved in this morning's bush crash. Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the aid was intended to ease the burden on the victims and their families "I handed over the aid to the families of the deceased and visited those hospitalised at Gerik Hospital." Asyraf, who represented Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, also offered prayers for the victims' and strength for their families in this difficult time. "I was moved by the victims' condition by meeting their family members at Gerik Hospital. "It was heartbreaking to learn that some had just arrived from Jerteh, only to be met with the devastating news of their loved ones' deaths." Earlier today, 15 people were killed when the bus they were in collided with a multi-purpose vehicle on Jalan Jeli-Grik near Tasik Banding, Perak. The accident involved a bus carrying UPSI students and a Perodua Alza. Thirty-three people were injured. The Civil Defence Force (APM) said the Banun Disaster Operations Control Centre received a distress call at 1.10am. APM personnel arrived at the scene at 2.11am to find the UPSI bus overturned and the Alza MPV severely damaged. Several victims were rushed to Gerik Hospital. It is understood that the bus was travelling from Jerteh at the time of the crash.
