Macron lands EU first with Singapore pact amid ‘third way' push
ISTANBUL, May 31 — France and Singapore on Friday upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership as Paris projected its 'third way' to South-east Asian nations during President Emmanuel Macron's three-nation trip.
During his last stop in Singapore, Macron and host Prime Minister Lawrence Wong agreed to expand cooperation in areas including intelligence sharing and defence, Anadolu Ajansi reported.
Elevating ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership is Singapore's first such diplomatic arrangement with an EU nation.
Since his first stop in Vietnam, Macron has projected France as a 'third way' amid US-China rivalry in the wider Asia-Pacific region.
Addressing students in Vietnamese capital Hanoi, Macron said: 'We don't want to be dependent on the great powers.'
'We want to cooperate, but be able to choose. That means in every area of the game: our education, innovation, industry, health, energy, geopolitics, and defence,' Macron told students at Hanoi's University of Science and Technology early this week when he began his trip to South-east Asia.
His trip came amid US President Donald Trump's tariff war, which hit Vietnam with at least 47 per cent levies.
According to Macron's aides, France's 'Indo-Pacific strategy' proposes a third way to the countries of the region.
'We want to be able to work with the Americans and the Chinese. We want to have the best relations in the world, but not to be dependent on them. We want our sovereignty and stability to be respected everywhere,' Macron said.
'Under the new partnership, we will enhance cooperation in other areas, including deployment of defence technology and critical and emerging technologies,' Wong said during a joint news conference with Macron.
The two countries signed 13 agreements covering nuclear energy, defense cooperation, joint research, and mutual protection of classified information, Anadolu reported.
Wong said the nations would also 'deepen our cooperation in existing sectors and expand our collaboration in new areas like decarbonisation and digitalisation.'
He also announced plans to establish more high-level dialogue between senior officials.
Macron arrived Thursday in Singapore for a two-day visit, the final stop of his South-east Asia tour after Vietnam and Indonesia. — Bernama-AA

'Our focus isn't just to sales, but more towards building a social network with readers and writers, especially from Malaysia. This is because Malaysian writers are involved in our publications, such as the Kayu Api magazine that features their works,' she said. Meanwhile, Muhammad Yusuf from Indonesian publisher Gema Insani said this year was the third time his company joined the fair, and they were sharing a booth with two other publishers from home. 'We are sharing a booth together with Pustaka Al-Kautsar and Gulalibooks and we believe that the potential of the Malaysian market is big with the positive response from chidlren, students and adults. 'The books we carry, include those by famous icon Buya Hamka, historical comics and children's books, match the interest of readers here,' he said. This year's book fair bears the theme 'Buku: Membaca, Memimpin' and ends today after starting on May 23, with over 1,000 exhibition booths by almost 300 local and foreign publishers.

(AP pic) BEIJING : China has protested to the US over 'vilifying' remarks made by defence secretary Pete Hegseth, the foreign ministry said today, while accusing it of deliberately ignoring calls for peace from regional nations. Beijing has objected to Hegseth calling it a threat in the Indo-Pacific, the ministry added, describing his comments at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore yesterday as 'deplorable' and 'intended to sow division'. 'Hegseth deliberately ignored the call for peace and development by countries in the region, and instead touted the Cold War mentality for bloc confrontation, vilified China with defamatory allegations, and falsely called China a 'threat',' the ministry said on its website. 'The US has deployed offensive weaponry in the South China Sea and kept stoking flames and creating tensions in the Asia-Pacific, which are turning the region into a powder keg,' the ministry added in the statement. Hegseth had called on allies in the Indo-Pacific region, including key security ally Australia, to spend more on defence after warning of the 'real and potentially imminent' threat from China. Asked about the call to boost defence spending, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government had pledged an extra A$10 billion to defence. 'What we'll do is we'll determine our defence policy,' he told reporters today, a transcript of his remarks showed. As part of Washington's longstanding defence ties with the Philippines, the US military this year deployed Typhon launchers that can fire missiles to hit targets in both China and Russia from the island of Luzon. China and the Philippines contest sovereignty over some islands and atolls in the South China Sea, with growing maritime run-ins between their coast guards as both vie to patrol the waters. The ministry also warned the US not to 'play with fire' on the Taiwan question. In his speech at Asia's premier forum for defence leaders, military officials and diplomats, Hegseth said any attempt by China to conquer Taiwan 'would result in devastating consequences'. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's application to the Federal Court to rule whether he has immunity from a civil suit invites direct comparison with a case concerning former prime minister Najib Razak, says Perikatan Nasional chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan. In a statement today, Takiyuddin pointed out that Najib had sought immunity from a civil suit filed against him by then DAP MP Tony Pua over allegations of abuse of power in the 1MDB controversy. Takiyuddin, a lawyer, noted that the Federal Court had decided on Nov 19, 2019 that the prime minister is a 'public officer' and can be sued for abuse of power. 'This case (involving Najib) set an important precedent that a prime minister is not immune to civil or tort action if it relates to the public abuse of power. 'In other words, no citizen, including the prime minister, should be above the law, and no position can be used as a legal shield against actions taken on a personal basis,' he said. Anwar is asking the High Court to refer eight questions of law to the Federal Court for determination, including whether he has immunity from a civil suit brought against him by a former research assistant. He said he wants the apex court to rule whether Articles 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution grant him qualified immunity from a suit filed by Yusoff Rawther four years ago. The suit relates to events which allegedly took place prior to Anwar taking office on Nov 24, 2022. In the application filed by Messrs Zain Megat & Murad, Anwar asked the court to decide whether the suit would impair the effective discharge of his executive duties and undermine the constitutional separation of powers.
