Govt. to notify GBG Act on May 15, paving the way for restructuring BBMP
The stage is set for the restructuring of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), with the State government scheduled to issue a notification enforcing the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act (GBGA), 2024, on May 15.
With the implementation of this Act, the BBMP — currently governed under the BBMP Act, 2021 — will cease to exist in its present legal form. However, a civic body under the same nomenclature will continue to govern the city. A new administrator will be appointed to oversee the further splitting of the BBMP, likely into three or five corporations.
'The GBG Act will be notified on May 15. The notification will contain details as to how the Act will be implemented further,' Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil told presspersons. When asked how many corporations would be notified, he refused to specify a number. The Act provides for creation of up to seven corporations.
A senior official from the Urban Development Department (UDD) confirmed that the new BBMP will function under the provisions of the new Act, and the current commissioner will remain at the helm of the civic body.
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot gave his assent to the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, 2024, in April. In March, the Governor had returned the Bill, passed by the legislature during the Budget session, seeking clarification. The government sent back the Bill providing clarifications following which it was cleared.
An official said the Greater Bengaluru Authority under the new Act will not exceed the current BBMP area which is 709 sq. km. After the notification, the government will begin the process to split the BBMP. The official said the State is planning to establish between three and five corporations.
Meanwhile, Bengaluru Town Hall, a civic society collective, has decided to challenge the Act in the Supreme Court. The citizen activists argue that the Act violates the 74th amendment of the Constitution.

TTD issues legal notice to vendors for Tirupati Laddu GI tag misuse
VIJAYAWADA: In a decisive move to safeguard the sanctity and intellectual property of the sacred Tirupati Laddu, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has initiated legal action against multiple unauthorised entities found selling or promoting products under the 'Tirupati Laddu' name in violation of its registered Geographical Indication (GI). Legal notices were issued through Sahadeva Law Chambers to several online platforms and vendors, including PushMyCart (Mahita LLC) and Transact Foods Limited, for unauthorised commercial exploitation of the Tirupati Laddu name, and falsely associating their offerings with the temple. Tirupati Laddu is a protected GI under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The laddu is exclusively prepared within the Tirumala temple under the supervision of TTD, following a time-honoured and sanctified process. Unauthorised use and sale of the name not only infringe legal rights but also undermine the spiritual sanctity of the offering. In response, PushMyCart acknowledged receipt of the legal notice, and showing goodwill, suspended the infringing product listings pending legal review. Several other vendors have also taken down their listings following the TTD's proactive outreach. TTD Executive Officer J Syamala Rao said, 'The Tirupati Laddu is not just a product, but a sacred prasadam with deep spiritual and cultural value. We are committed to taking all necessary legal steps to prevent its misuse, and protect the trust of crores of devotees worldwide.' According to BBMP's Deputy Conservator of Forest (DCF), RLDA has also been asked to furnish a detailed response for every question and query raised by citizens during themeeting held on May 20.'We have asked higher officials of RLDA to reconsider the project, looking at objections raised by the public. Public sentiment is clearly against the proposed project. BBMP has also recorded the proceedings on May 20 and handed it over to RLDA for a detailed response. A general reply to public concerns will not be admissible,' said BLG Swamy, DCF, got to know about the project when BBMP put out a public notice on April 25, stating RLDA's intention to remove 368 trees for commercial development at the Bangalore Cantonment Railway Colony campus. Following the notice, BBMP was flooded with objections against the RLDA officials informed that the project is to ensure a source of revenue for Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company Limited (K-RIDE). The agency stated that the Bengaluru suburban rail project was approved by the Railway Board with a total cost of Rs 15,767 crore, with a completion period of 6 years. While 20% of this cost is borne by the State government and 20% by the Centre, the remaining 60% is through per RLDA, out of the Railway share of Rs 2,479 crore (20%), Rs 500 crore is through budgetary support and the remaining through the returns of monetisation of land parcels identified in the project tree activists say, after the stormy public consultation held on May 20, RLDA should withdraw the proposal and consider establishing the project at an alternate site.'The railway should respect people's opinions and look for an alternative location.
