GE2025 sample count: PAP's Ng Chee Meng leads in Jalan Kayu SMC with 52% against WP

Business Times03-05-2025

[SINGAPORE] Labour chief Ng Chee Meng is leading with 52 per cent of votes in the sample count for the closely-watched seat of Jalan Kayu SMC, ahead of Workers' Party (WP) rival Andre Low.
Jalan Kayu SMC, which has 29,628 voters, was newly carved out from PAP stronghold Ang Mo Kio GRC this election. It includes parts of the former Sengkang West SMC, which the WP contested in the 2011 and 2015 elections.
The northeastern constituency drew attention after the aborted S$2.2 billion sale of NTUC's Income Insurance to Germany's Allianz emerged as a flashpoint.
Ng faced fresh questions over his role in the deal, which the government later blocked over concerns about a capital extraction plan. On Apr 27, saying that the deal was done in 'good faith', Ng apologised and vowed to 'do better'.
Days later, Low faced scrutiny over leaked Telegram messages in which he used vulgarities and complained about a variety of issues. He apologised for the remarks, calling them 'completely inappropriate'.
Low, 34, is a staff product manager at a fintech company and former disputes lawyer. He joined the WP in 2020 and served as secretarial assistant to the party's Sengkang MP Louis Chua.

Ng, 56, became a minister soon after entering politics in GE2015 as part of the PAP's team for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC. A former defence chief, he was appointed Minister for Education (Schools) and Second Transport Minister from 2016 to 2018. Over the next two years, he served as Minister in the Prime Minister's Office.
But in GE2020, Ng's PAP team for Sengkang GRC lost to the WP, which secured its second GRC with 52.12 per cent of the vote.
Note: As this is a sample count, the election result could be different. Counting is still in progress. The public should wait for the announcement of the election result by the returning officer, Han Kok Juan, which will be broadcast live on television.

US troops make first detentions in Trump border military zones

FILE PHOTO: A Texas National Guard soldier stands near the wall on the border between Mexico and U.S. during a sandstorm, as seen from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico March 6, 2025. REUTERS/Jose Luis Gonzalez/File Photo U.S. troops have made their first detentions inside military areas set up on the U.S.-Mexico border as part of the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration, the U.S. Army said. The unprecedented military areas along 260 miles (418 km) of border in New Mexico and Texas were declared extensions of U.S. Army bases by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, allowing troops to temporarily detain migrants and other civilian trespassers. Three 'illegal aliens' were detained by troops in the New Mexico area near Santa Teresa on June 3, before being handed to U.S. Border Patrol, Army spokesperson Major Geoffrey Carmichael said in an email. "This marks the first time Department of Defense personnel have recorded a temporary detainment within either National Defense Area," Carmichael said. U.S. presidents have long used active-duty and reservist troops on the international boundary in support roles to U.S. Border Patrol such as surveillance and construction. President Donald Trump took military use a step further by giving troops the right to hold trespassers they catch in the zones until civilian law enforcement assumes custody. Federal troops can also search people and conduct crowd control measures within the areas, according to the Army. Designation of the zones as military bases allowed troops to detain migrants without the need for Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act. The 1807 law lets a U.S. president deploy federal troops domestically to suppress events like civil disorder. Prosecution of dozens of migrants caught in the zones has faced setbacks in court after judges in New Mexico and Texas dismissed trespassing charges, and acquitted a Peruvian woman, ruling they did not know they were entering restricted areas. The primary role of troops in the zones is to detect and track illegal border crossers, with around 390 such detections so far, the Army said. News of the detentions inside military areas came as Trump deployed state-based National Guard troops to Los Angeles during protests over immigration raids. Freedom Flotilla Coalition says aid vessel approaching Gaza-bound ship left

The British-flagged Madleen boat is currently off the Egyptian coast, heading slowly towards the Gaza Strip. PHOTO: REUTERS CAIRO - A vessel that was approaching Freedom Flotilla Coalition's Gaza-bound charity ship the Madleen has left, the coalition said early on June 9, after an alarm was sounded on the ship warning of a possible interception. Hours earlier, the Israeli Defence Minister Israeli Katz said he told the military to stop the boat carrying activists including Sweden's Greta Thunberg and a symbolic quantity of aid, including rice and baby formula, to Gaza in defiance of an Israeli blockade. The coalition posted on its Telegram account a voice memo of Mr Thiago Avila, one of the activists onboard, saying "we have been surrounded by many lights all at once; they were circling our boat but in the end they kept going their own way." Operated by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the British-flagged Madleen boat is currently off the Egyptian coast, heading slowly towards the Gaza Strip, which is besieged by Israel. Ukraine boxer Oleksandr Usyk wants Trump to ‘live in his house' to witness war

PHOTO: REUTERS Ukraine boxer Oleksandr Usyk wants Trump to 'live in his house' to witness war LONDON - World heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has offered Donald Trump the chance to live in his house in a bid to help the US president understand the war in Ukraine. Mr Trump had vowed to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine 'in 24 hours' if he was elected president. But there has been no end to Russia's invasion since Mr Trump returned to the White House in 2024. Ukrainian boxer Usyk, who has been a tireless campaigner for peace in his homeland, believes Mr Trump needs to have a clearer view of the dire situation if he is to find a solution to the crisis. The 38-year-old has urged the president to join him at his house in Ukraine to see for himself the damage done by the war. 'I advise American President Donald Trump to come to Ukraine and live in my house for one week,' Usyk told BBC Sport on June 8. 'Only one week. I will give him my house. Live please in Ukraine and watch what is going on every night. 'Every night there are bombs and flights above my house. Bombs, rocket. Every night. It's enough.' Mr Trump clashed with Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelensky during a contentious summit meeting in the Oval Office in February. Mr Trump warned Mr Zelensky to show more gratitude for America's help in peace talks before telling him to leave the White House. Asked if Mr Trump could be convinced to change his opinion, Usyk said: 'I don't know. Maybe he'll understand, maybe he won't.' Usyk, who has won all 23 of his professional bouts, is currently in a training camp to prepare for a rematch with IBF champion Daniel Dubois on July 19 at Wembley. But the WBC, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion said the war is never far from his mind. 'I worry about what happens in my country. It's very bad because Ukrainian people have died,' he said. 'It's not just military people, children, women, grandmothers and grandfathers, too.' AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
