‘My Mom Jayne' Review: Mariska Hargitay's Personal Production on HBO
It might be argued that Hollywood sex symbol Jayne Mansfield is more famous now for being the mother of Mariska Hargitay than for her own status as a prototypical '50s bombshell and star of such films as 'The Girl Can't Help It.' Ms. Hargitay's tenure as Olivia Benson on 'Law and Order: SVU,' after all, has lasted twice as long as her mother's entire film career.
But Mansfield, who died in a violent car crash in 1967, does occupy a singular if amorphous place in the pop-culture pantheon, and Ms. Hargitay's mission as director and producer of 'My Mom Jayne' is multifold: rehabilitate her mother's reputation as one of the 'dumb blondes' who rode the wake of Marilyn Monroe (Diana Dors and Mamie Van Doren were others); examine Mansfield as an example of manufactured Hollywood product; and come to grips with her own trauma concerning parentage and inheritance. It is a very personal documentary, a designation that can connote the good, the not-so-bad and the distinctly uncomfortable. 'My Mom Jayne' has it all, including a puzzle that Ms. Hargitay pursues throughout.

Riverside County boy riding e-bike seriously injured in collision with car on busy road
A Menifee boy was seriously injured when he collided with a vehicle while riding an e-bike on Monday evening, police say. It happened at around 5:30 p.m. at the busy intersection of Scott Road and Bellamy Lane, according to the Menifee Police Department. They say that the bike rider, only identified as a teenage boy, was riding southbound on Bellamy at the same time that a red Jeep Cherokee being driven by a 28-year-old woman was heading eastbound on Scott. "The male juvenile continued riding southbound across Scott Road," said a post on MPD's Facebook. "The vehicle veered to the right to avoid the collision; however, was unable to do so and collided with the E-bike. The vehicle then collided into a fence." The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital after suffering severe, but non-life-threatening injuries, police said. He was in stable condition on Tuesday. Investigators say that the driver stayed at the scene after the crash and was uninjured. She was not arrested after undergoing questioning. Chicago man, 19, charged in April shooting at Illinois State University
A 19-year-old Chicago man was arrested and charged Tuesday in a shooting that left another person wounded at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois. The Illinois State University Police Department said Emir Thomas was arrested in Chicago with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals, and charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery involving the discharge of a firearm, and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon in the April 27 incident. The shooting took place near the Bone Student Center, at 200 N. University St. in Normal, during a registered student event around 7:40 p.m. that Sunday night in April. The shooting appears to have taken place during a fight in the entryway outside of the event. After the shooting, university police said they reviewed hours of public safety footage, examined evidence, interviewed witnesses, and worked with the McLean County State's Attorney's office ahead of the arrest. University police said Thomas was not affiliated with Illinois State University.

Teen indicted in fatal stabbing of another student at a high school track meet in Texas
A teen accused of fatally stabbing another student at a high school track meet in suburban Dallas was indicted Tuesday on a murder charge, a prosecutor said. A grand jury indicted Karmelo Anthony in the death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said. Willis said the April 2 stabbing at the school stadium in Frisco 'struck a deep nerve — here in Collin County and beyond.' Anthony was 17 at the time of the stabbing and has since turned 18. 'When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core,' Willis said. Students from several high schools in the Frisco Independent School District were competing when the stabbing occurred. According to an arrest report, a witness said that when Anthony sat under the tent belonging to Metcalf's team, Metcalf told Anthony to move, and Anthony replied: 'Touch me and see what happens.' Metcalf then touched Anthony, and Anthony said to punch him and see what happens, the arrest report said. A short time later, Metcalf grabbed Anthony and Anthony stabbed him with a knife, the report said. Afterward, Anthony told an officer that he was protecting himself and that Metcalf had 'put his hands on me,' according to the report. Anthony's attorney, Mike Howard, said Anthony was looking forward to his day in court. 'We expect that when the full story is heard, the prosecution will not be able to rule out the reasonable doubt that Karmelo Anthony may have acted in self-defense,' Howard said. If convicted, Anthony faces up to life in prison. He was released from jail and placed on house arrest after his bond was reduced.
