Ohio residents are the No.4 most loyal in the country, with an overwhelming majority uninterested in buying homes outside the state.
With Ohio becoming a top state for business, residents are content to stay put rather than seek a new life across the country. In two states, Ohio was also listed as a top destination for those looking to move.
A recent LendingTree report analyzed mortgage purchase inquiries made on the platform in all 50 states in 2024 to find out which states people are most loyal to, interested in moving to and staying away from.
The study found 90.5% of Ohioans seeking to purchase a home are looking in-state - making it the No.4 state for most loyal residents. Only 9.5% are looking to buy out of state with the top destination being Florida.

For every 100 Ohioans looking to buy out of state, Ohio attracted 88 out-of-state buyers.
Holding its own in retaining its current residents, Ohio was also listed as the 'top destination' state for residents in:

Generally, the study found of those inquiring about out-of-state homes 86% were most likely to do so for personal occupancy. Another 10% were interested in purchasing a second home and 4% for investment purposes.

In generational trends, 24.4% of baby boomer shoppers searched for homes in other states. Gen Xers (15.0%), millennials (11.9%) and Gen Zers (10.3%) followed.

Getty Images What To Know Between 2019 and 2024, property taxes rose in nearly every U.S. metropolitan area, according to a Redfin study, including in Ohio, which is normally considered to have a relatively affordable housing market. From 2019 to 2023, the median property tax in Ohio rose by 23 percent, above the national average of 21.6 percent, Axios reported. As of 2023, according to the Tax Foundation, Ohio had the eighth-highest effective property tax rate in the country at 1.3 percent, despite being 16th on list of the most affordable markets in the country. Some Ohioans appeared to have had enough. The campaign to eliminate property taxes in the Buckeye State is being led by Citizens for Property Tax Reform, a grassroots movement spearheaded by homeowner Beth Blackmarr. Blackmarr, a resident of Lakewood, told that her home's assessed value jumped by 51.9 percent last year, leading her to receive a much higher property tax bill as the property she originally bought for $76,000 now is considered worth $299,000. Together with Keith Davey, founder of the grassroots group Save Our Seniors, Blackmarr launched Citizens for Property Tax Reform to spur property tax reform in the state. According to Blackmarr, Ohio lawmakers have had plenty of opportunities to offer relief to homeowners struggling with rising property taxes but have been unwilling or unable to address the issue, which is hitting seniors the hardest. "I suspect it's because they built a wobbly tower of property tax law over these decades and they're afraid to pull one of the blocks out, because they're afraid the whole thing's gonna come tumbling down," she told CleveScene. That's why Blackmarr decided that Ohio homeowners had to take the situation into their own hands, promoting the changes they want to see. The group's campaign was initially focused on seniors but has extended to a full-scale campaign for all homeowners. The initiative, however, has its critics, who fear that abolishing property taxes would leave local governments without sufficient funds to support crucial public services. According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, $18.5 billion was collected in the state in 2023, which would be hard to replace with other sources of revenue. The measure, though, is moving forward. Last month, the Ohio Ballot Board signed offon the proposal to amend the Ohio constitution to abolish property taxes, giving official permission to Citizens for Property Tax Reform to start gathering signatures supporting the measure's appearance on the November ballot. The measure is among nearly 20 other bills that Ohio lawmakers will consider to reduce property taxes. Newsweek contacted Blackmarr and Save Our Seniors for comment by email on Tuesday morning. What People Are Saying House Minority Leader Allison Russo, in a statement after the Ohio Ballot Board's meeting: "I think the effort to put this forward as a constitutional ballot amendment clearly demonstrates frustration by Ohioans on this issue. When the Legislature doesn't respond, the people usually step up—often through ballot initiatives. "However, this particular initiative concerns me because while it eliminates the property tax, it doesn't explain how we'll replace the funds that support police, fire departments, public education and other critical services. Democrats have been introducing bipartisan legislation for the last couple of General Assemblies to provide direct relief, but none have been prioritized by the Republican majority. It's beyond time to provide direct property tax relief for Ohioans." Ohio state Senator Bill DeMora, in a statement shared by ABC6: "It's frustration of citizens that the Legislature won't take action on common-sense issues. "Ending property taxes would be a disaster for the state of Ohio and local governments. I think it's a stupid idea, but again, I understand the frustration of people because their property taxes are too high, and the Legislature hasn't acted." What Happens Next Citizens for Property Tax Reform's campaign needs to collect at least 413,000 valid signatures from registered voters in half of the state's 88 counties by July 1. If they do, the measure will appear on the November ballot, and it will be up to voters to decide whether they want to keep or eliminate property taxes.

PG&E and California Fire Foundation Open Applications for Wildfire Safety and Preparedness Grants
More than $1 million in grants, public education, and outreach funded in 2025; Applications Accepted May 30 through June 30 OAKLAND, Calif., June 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Ahead of California's peak fire season, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and the California Fire Foundation (CFF) are encouraging California-based fire departments and community-based organizations to apply for grants for wildfire safety and preparedness programs and projects. Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on June 30, 2025, through the CFF website. Award notification will begin July 31, 2025. The grant program continues an eight-year partnership between PG&E and CFF. PG&E and The PG&E Corporation Foundation (PG&E Foundation) are providing a total of $1.65 million to CFF's Wildfire Safety and Preparedness Program (WSPP). The program continues to raise public awareness about wildfire safety and deliver resources to underserved communities in high fire-risk areas. The program includes a competitive grant program that last year awarded 55 local fire departments and community groups $750,000 in funding. This year's program includes increased funding for $950,000 in grant awards. Funding for these charitable donations comes from PG&E shareholders, not customers. In 2024, funding supported: Purchasing approximately 7,560 pieces of personal protection equipment including helmets, boots, gloves, goggles and fire shelters Removing over 21 acres of hazardous tree and brush Chipping and hauling of 1.5 million pounds of tree limbs, branches and other combustibles Conducting 22 prescribed fires or pile burns for forest management "Now in its eighth year, the Wildfire Safety and Preparedness Program serves as a constant reminder to Californians of the recurring and deadly nature of wildfires," said Angie Carmignani, Executive Director of the California Fire Foundation. "Whether during historic wildfire seasons or quieter periods, the program has remains steadfast – reaching communities year after year to ensure they're prepared for wildfire. Our partnership with PG&E has been instrumental in making this life-saving work possible and directly supports CFF's mission to strengthen disaster preparedness across our state." Since 2018, CFF, which administers and manages the program, has awarded 368 grants to fire departments and community organizations statewide, focusing its efforts in Northern and Central California. Funding targets communities identified as having extreme or elevated fire risk as identified by the California Public Utilities Commission. "PG&E is grateful for our ongoing partnership with the California Fire Foundation as we share the goal of helping our hometowns do everything possible to prevent wildfires. Altogether, the number of working adults living with their parents fell 8.3 percent across the 50 metros from 2018 to 2023. Only 13 metros saw an increase, led by Las Vegas at 22.1 percent. Salary and cost of living may factor into why some working adults continue to stay with their parents, as the report found those living at home make 43.5 percent less on average than their independent peers. "Wages don't keep up with the cost of living," Kevin Thompson, the CEO of 9i Capital Group and the host of the 9innings podcast, told Newsweek. "In theory, economics would suggest that employers need to pay more to offset rising housing costs. But that's just not happening. Wages are sticky, they don't move as fast as housing prices. And when prices eventually drop, no one is lining up to take a pay cut." In many of these places, people are spending over 40 percent of their income just on rent. That's not viable for most individuals, especially if they're living alone." Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, told Newsweek: "The common trait of cities where working adults living with their parents is common—like Los Angeles and Miami—and where rates of this demographic are rising—like Atlanta and Las Vegas—is the cost of living is either already high or has been rising dramatically. The price of housing, in particular, is much higher in these cities, and with both home ownership and rent prices still hovering at or near all-time highs, financially it makes more sense for these adults to live with family than to move out on their own." What Happens Next While getting your first place has historically been seen as a rite of passage as you gain financial independence, the younger generations are likely to stay at home if they feel the benefits outweigh the cons in today's economy. "While obviously most working adults would rather live on their own, this move could be the most fiscally responsible one," Beene said. "Being able to keep your head above financial water while also saving some of your income is the right move to make if you have the option, even if you'd prefer to be on your own."
