Nashville tree campaign working to plant 500K trees by 2050
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A group with a mission to restore Nashville's tree canopy, Root Nashville has planted more than 50,000 trees in the metro area.
You can get trees planted on your property, and it's completely free.
You can also get more than just trees from the group: they also offer free rain gardens and rain barrels.
Root Nashville's goal is to plant 500,000 trees by 2050.
Neighborhoods across Nashville each have picked captains to head up the project.
Glencliff's captain is Joey Lanier.
He's hoping to get as many people as possible involved, saying there are so many benefits to having more trees in the neighborhood, stormwater management and climate control being a couple.
He told News 2 it's pretty simple to get involved.
'The program allows for each resident to get up to three free trees,' Lanier told News 2. 'Every year we offer seven different trees to choose from. All they have to do is dig the hole, and we'll come by after orders are completed from October through March and drop the trees in the holes, cover them up, and water them in for everybody.'
Some of the types of trees Root Nashville is offering this season are the Southern Magnolia, Black Gum, Canadian Red Chokecherry, and Bald Cypress trees.

4 run from stolen vehicle after crashing into La Vergne home
LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Four juveniles were taken into custody after a stolen vehicle crashed into a home in La Vergne early Wednesday morning. Officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle on Jennifer Pierce Drive around 1:45 a.m. Springfield kidnapping determined to be a prank The stolen Kia Soul was then located near Dick Buchanan Street. The Kia fled from officers before it crashed into a home on George Buchanan Drive, according to La Vergne police. Four juvenile suspects ran from the crash scene but were located and taken into custody with coordinated efforts of patrol officers and K-9 teams, according to the department. The suspects reportedly admitted to stealing the vehicle and to their alleged involvement in multiple vehicle burglaries in the area. All juveniles were taken to the hospital for medical clearance before they were taken to the Rutherford Juvenile Center. ⏩ This incident highlights the quick response, coordination, and dedication of our team to public safety. Severe storms possible in Middle TN Thursday through Saturday
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The next three days will bring a risk of severe thunderstorms in parts of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. The main day of concern for all areas is Friday. As outdoor plans are happening, you'll want to prepare for storm chances and keep the WKRN Weather app available for alerts. Here is the severe outlook for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Thursday's Marginal Risk (level 1/5) is for northwestern counties. On Friday, a Slight Risk (level 2/5) for all our area. On Saturday, a 15% risk (equates to a Slight Risk level 2/5) for counties mostly south of Interstate 40. FORECAST: Middle Tennessee & Southern Kentucky Weather Each day has different threats, so we'll look closer at each day. Thursday Thursday's storm chances are focused northwest of Nashville thanks to an approaching cold front. Heavy rain and wind gusts are the main concerns. Storm chances will be expected with daytime heating but not everyone will see storms. However, these storms could last into the late evening and overnight in parts of Kentucky. RADAR | Track weather across TN live Friday The risk Friday is the best for our entire area as daytime heating will supply ample moisture and fuel for thunderstorm development. Also, a storm complex moving out of Oklahoma and Arkansas will help increase the damaging wind gust potential for the region. Through 7 a.m. Saturday morning, another batch of storms are possible. These should not be severe but have heavy rain and lightning with them. ALERTS | Weather advisories in Middle Tennessee Saturday On Saturday, we do not have a very clear picture of the model data. However, with a front that stalls out and moves slowly to the south, this will keep our storm chances going throughout the day. The severe risk would mostly be in the afternoon and evening as the front encounters the moist air. Wind gusts and heavy rain remain the primary threats. Rain chances lower on Sunday, but return Monday with another cold front. We'll look for drier conditions by Tuesday. Rain amounts from Thursday to Tuesday could peak in the 1-3 inch range for us. An isolated higher total possible where heavier bands of rain occur. Human trafficking suspect arrested after investigation at Nashville motels
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man was arrested Tuesday following an investigation into a human trafficking operation based out of Nashville motels. According to court documents, special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation conducted an investigation in December 2023 into a human trafficking operation at Super 8 in the 800 block of Murfreesboro Pike and Somatel Nashville Airport Hotel on Metroplex Drive. 📧 Have breaking news come to you: → During this investigation, officials spoke with two women who claimed they were recruited in Venezuela and smuggled to the United States. Once in Tennessee, the women were reportedly forced into engaging in commercial sex to pay off 'fines' of $20,000-$30,000. Arrest documents detail how the women were sex trafficked under the direction of several people, including Kleiver Daniel Mota-Rivero and Yilibeth Del Carmen Rivero-De Caldera –who were indicted in February for their roles in a Middle Tennessee-based sex trafficking operation. Tuesday, officers arrested a third person — 25-year-old Ramon de Jesus Velasquez-Martinez — for his role in a similar operation involving Mota-Rivero. According to reports, one of the women said between November 2023 and February 2025 Velasquez-Martinez sent commercial sex clients to her motel rooms, took the money earned from these interactions and frequently took her cellphone to monitor who she was in contact with. RELATED: Several Venezuelan nationals indicted for role in Middle Tennessee-based sex trafficking ring The woman told authorities that in 2024, she escaped the trafficking operation and moved to Miami to work at a restaurant. Velasquez-Martinez reportedly showed up at her workplace and threatened her with a gun to go with him while making comments about her children back in Venezuela. Court documents said after this interaction she returned to Nashville with him and was forced back in to participating in commercial sex acts. During the investigation authorities reportedly found 26 advertisements for commercial sex posted in Nashville which featured Velasquez-Martinez's phone number as the main point of contact. Authorities said thousands of text messages were recovered between Velasquez-Martinez and other suspects regarding commercial sex clients, advertisements and firearms. ⏩ Velasquez-Martinez is charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felony trafficking for a commercial sex act. According to Davidson County Sheriff's Office records, he is being held on an ICE detainer and a $150,000 bond.
