Michigan football's 2026 recruiting class soars to top 12 with 5 commits this week
It wasn't that long ago that Michigan football fans were lamenting the fact that you almost had to click 'read more' in order to see where the Wolverines were ranked in the 2026 recruiting team rankings. Even in the month of May, there was a local outcry as the maize and blue had just a handful of commits, seemingly languishing behind a series of also-rans.
Oh, how things change. Perhaps patience was in order?
Now here we are, a month later, and fans are celebrating what's turning out to be one of the best classes in the country. The Wolverines got two commitments on Friday, about 15 minutes apart (if that), when Richmond (Va.) Huguenot three-star linebacker Markel Dabney and Honolulu (Hawaii) Kamehameha four-star offensive tackle Malakai Lee both pledged to the class.
That's adding on to commitments this week from St. Louis (Mo.) DeSmet four-star defensive tackle Titan Davis, Mansfield (Tx.) four-star wide receiver Zion Robinson, and Needham (Mass.) St. Sebastian's four-star offensive tackle Marky Walbridge.
Oh, and there are still two or three outstanding commits who have told Sherrone Moore and the program, but haven't announced yet publicly.
So, where does Michigan rank now that it's added five commitments in five days? Here's a look at the different recruiting services:
We'll have to wait about a month to see where ESPN ranks the maize and blue.
With the new rankings update, Michigan has surpassed teams such as Texas, Tennessee, Florida, and LSU (via all the rankings services). Whereas, beforehand, the Wolverines were behind all of them.
There are still several top targets that are trending toward the maize and blue who decide soon, such as Richmond (Va.) Hermitage four-star CB Andre Clarke, Frisco (Tx.) Panther Creek four-star S Donovan Webb, Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith four-star WR Travis Johnson, Fort Worth (Tx.) North Crowley four-star IOL John Turntine III, Miami (Fla.) Northwestern five-star WR Calvin Russell, and Carrollton (Ga.) four-star CB Dorian Barney -- most of whom have at least one prediction that they'll end up in a winged helmet come decision day.

According to the Associated Press, Harbaugh and Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel have been added to a class-action lawsuit targeting Weiss; who was indicted for hacking into the accounts of thousands of college athletes in search of intimate photos and other scandalous information. The complaint alleges that Harbaugh and others in the Wolverines' athletic department knew of Weiss' behavior and still allowed him to work on the staff. "The university's delay in taking meaningful protective action until after a high-stakes game sends a clear message: Student welfare was secondary," attorney Parker Stinar said. Advertisement "Had Harbaugh implemented basic oversight of his staff, plaintiffs and the class would have been protected against predators such as Weiss," the amended lawsuit stated. "Instead, Weiss was a highly compensated asset that was promoted by and within the football program, from which position he was able to, and did, target female student athletes." They went from a bottom-table team to a playoff squad in just one offseason. The Pistons are building an identity, which head coach JB Bickerstaff has helped create. Now, the organization's focus will shift. It's not purely development, though that aspect won't go away. Identifying core players and making moves to add the proper complementary players is much-needed as the Pistons aim to continue to get better and prepare to climb towards title contention. The offseason is here, too. With the NBA Draft having come and gone, the next step of the summer is free agency, which begins in just a couple of days. Detroit could look into acquiring Nickeil Alexander-Walker or Santi Aldama. After the Timberwolves paid Reid, they'll struggle financially to retain all of their free agents. If they let Alexander-Walker go, the Pistons will have the salary cap room to land the young wing. Aldama is a great shooter from the Memphis Grizzlies and would provide great floor spacing for Cunningham and the Pistons. Advertisement With the Grizzlies being aggressive early in the offseason, they could aim to find more complementary pieces to Jaren Jackson Jr. and Ja Morant, making it less likely they'll pay Aldama. Again, finances could be the reason Detroit has a chance at the two role players, and they certainly have the salary cap room to make the moves to land additional talent. The Pistons were the No. 6 seed last season and played a competitive first round against a talented New York Knicks team. In a now wide-open Eastern Conference, the Pistons are right to build around what worked last year and improve as a team, even if they have to spend some of the cash on hand.
