Philippine Senate to convene impeachment court for VP Duterte next month
MANILA: The Philippine Senate will convene the impeachment court that will decide the future of Vice President Sara Duterte on Jun 3, according to a document seen by AFP on Friday (May 23).
Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives in February for "high crimes" including corruption and an alleged assassination plot against former ally and running mate President Ferdinand Marcos.
Senate President Francis Escudero has said hearings would begin in late July after incoming senators take their seats.
The impeachment trial was a key talking point in this month's mid-term elections, which decided half the upper body's 24 senators who will serve as her jury.
Escudero informed House Speaker Martin Romualdez that the upper house would be ready to hear charges on Jun 2 before convening the court, according to a photo of the letter forwarded to AFP.
"As stated in our letter dated February 24, 2025, the Senate shall expect the prosecution to read the seven charges under the Articles of Impeachment in open session," Escudero said in the letter dated May 19.
"Thereafter, the Senate shall be convened as an impeachment court at 9 o'clock in the morning of June 3, 2025 for the purpose of issuing the summons and such other relevant orders," it continues.
The vice president needs nine votes from the full 24-seat Senate for an acquittal. Losing would mean her removal and a permanent ban from public office.
Analysts told AFP last week that the outcome of the May 12 election appeared positive for Duterte, who saw an ally snare an unexpected seat while the president's ticket scored one fewer than predicted.

‘Big party promotion!': Singaporeans react to Desmond Lee's appointment as PAP chair, but some look for DPM Gan
SINGAPORE: The ruling People's Action Party (PAP) announced on Thursday (May 29) changes to its Central Executive Committee (CEC). Significantly, the PAP said it appointed a new chairman, Desmond Lee, the Education Minister. Other changes include the appointment of Health Minister Ong Ye Kung as Party Treasurer, and Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat has taken over as assistant treasurer. Minister of State for National Development and Trade and Industry Alvin Tan, meanwhile, is now the head of Young PAP, and Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs Faishal, who has been appointed chairperson of the PAP Malay Affairs Bureau, will now be part of the CEC. Mr Lee had previously been the party's assistant secretary-general. He replaces former Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat, who retired before this year's General Election. A Hybe spokesperson said the company opened an outpost in Beijing last month. Recently, both Hybe and SM Entertainment have been strengthening their teams focused on the Chinese market. Just this week, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that Tencent will be acquiring close to 10% of SM Entertainment for around US$180 million (S$232.13 million) in what would be one of the few major Chinese investments in a South Korean firm in recent years. The shares will come from Hybe, which is offloading its remaining 2.2 million SM Entertainment shares at 110,000 won each, based on a regulatory filing. There's growing anticipation that China may soon lift its unofficial ban on K-pop performances, which has been in place since 2016, driving up stock prices. Hybe shares have climbed 40% this year. SM Entertainment is up around 70%, and YG Entertainment, which manages Blackpink, has gained over 75%. Unlike SM, which had artists touring China before the ban, Hybe has had limited presence there. It shifted focus to the US and Japan instead, acquiring Ithaca Holdings—the company behind Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber. /TISG
