Coby White discovers his leadership role with the Bulls: ‘I just keep being myself'
CHICAGO — As Coby White walked off the court after his pregame warmup before the Bulls played the Mavericks on March 29, he stopped to sign autographs for some young fans with their arms outstretched near the Bulls' tunnel. A girl stuck her sneaker — a red-and-white Jordan 1 — through the guardrail. Without hesitation, White scribbled on the toe of her shoe.

It was a little gesture, but it was symbolic in a way; though he's not 'a superstar' by typical NBA standards, White is a star in Chicago. He doesn't have any big endorsement deals, and while he's a solid player, there's no national buzz around him. White doesn't have the contract of a star player, and we still don't know what the future is for this Bulls team, but he embodies the hard-hat, blue-collar work ethic Chicagoans pride themselves on.
Since the departures of Alex Caruso, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine, White, 25, has grown into a leadership role. In his sixth year with the Bulls, he is the longest-tenured player on the team.
'DeMar was the guy that gave the group great belief that we could win. And I think Coby's done the same thing,' Bulls coach Billy Donovan said.
White saw the changes in the team as an opportunity to take his game to another level.
'A lot of opportunity opened up, just to be honest when (LaVine) left, just because of the type of player he was, so there was a lot of responsibility on all of us to take our game to another level,' White told Chicago's 670 The Score. 'I think you've seen it, not only with me but with everybody else on the team. I wouldn't say it's all been on me. I think a lot of us have all stepped up in a new role, and I think we just needed to take advantage of it, each and every one of us individually.'
White's play has been a key contributor to the Bulls becoming a dangerous team to close out the regular season, making them a group opponents can't mark as an easy out on the schedule.
In a win over Orlando on March 6, White had a career-high 44-point game with five rebounds and two steals. He also broke the Bulls' single-season 3-point record (216), a record he already held. He's the only player in Bulls history to have consecutive seasons with 200-plus 3s, and the sixth Bulls guard to record 1,500 career rebounds, joining Jerry Sloan, Michael Jordan, Kirk Hinrich and Reggie Theus.

White also became just the second Bulls player to receive back-to-back player of the week nods; the first was another guard from North Carolina, Michael Jordan. Named Eastern Conference Player of the Month for March, White averaged 27.7 points and 3.7 assists in 15 games. Five other Bulls players have won the award since the 1979-80 season: Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler and DeRozan.
Despite the Bulls not being a title contender, White has shown signs of growth as a ball-handler and an around-the-rim scorer. With 20-plus points in 18 of the Bulls' last 22 games, White is a good example of patience persevering in an era in which teams sometimes give up early on young players.

The only Bulls player to eclipse 6,000 career points, 1,500 career boards and 1,500 career assists in the first 218 games with the team, White is averaging a career-high 20.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.6 rebounds.
'I just keep being myself. … Keep on getting lost in the game. Stay in the moment. Figure out other ways to impact the game, get to the free throw line, whatever it may be,' White told The Athletic.
White credits learning under DeRozan and LaVine for maintaining a calm demeanor and trusting himself in games even when his shots aren't falling.
'You're not going to hit shots every single night, but you still got to find ways to impact the game,' White said. 'The great players, they do little stuff like get to the line when their shots are not falling, or try to get easy ones, try to get to their spots, and stuff like that. Seeing DeRozan and LaVine) just flipping that mindset when it came to the fourth quarter, the one thing with them is they never stop shooting. They always continue to stay aggressive.'

On Wednesday, the Bulls return to the Eastern Conference Play-In Tournament for the third straight season with hopes of making the playoffs. They will take on Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro and the Miami Heat in Chicago. In their two previous Play-In appearances, the Bulls fell to the Heat, losing 102-91 in 2023 and 112-91 in 2024.
'He's a dynamic guard who can obviously hurt you from 3 and getting downhill,' Herro said. 'So just trying to balance picking up and pressuring him, making things tough on him. Just really not trying to let him keep catching rhythm. He's a rhythm player, so once he sees one or two, he can get hot.'
After the trades of Caruso, DeRozan, and LaVine, Chicago was expected by many to fold in favor of draft position. Instead, a re-energized Nikola Vučević, White and a young Bulls team is looking to take down the experienced Heat in the hunt for their first playoff appearance since 2022.
On Wednesday night, White will have another opportunity to step up and show Chicago this is his team.

Jason Kidd may have to chose between the Knicks and Cooper Flagg
Jason Kidd may have to chose between the Knicks and Cooper Flagg When the New York Knicks decided to move on from Tom Thibodeau, it was not immediately clear who would replace him. One reported option is Jason Kidd. There is one significant problem, though, and it is that Kidd is currently employed by the Dallas Mavericks. He helped the Mavericks win the Western Conference and appear in the NBA Finals just last season. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Knicks plan to request permission to interview Kidd about their coaching vacancy. That isn't the only actively employed NBA head coach that the Knicks reportedly covet. The organization also has its eyes on Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka and Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch, per SNY's Ian Begley. But, as noted by Kelly Iko of The Athletic, the Rockets are not expected to grant permission to the Knicks they formally request an interview. While there is no reporting on this yet, common sense suggests that Minnesota is likely to have a similar approach with Finch after he led them to back-to-back appearances in the Western Conference Finals. More: Jason Kidd looked absolutely baffled as Nico Harrison explained the Luka Dončić trade Kidd, however, is in an entirely different situation right now considering that Kidd was hired, in many ways, to coach Luka Dončić. Meanwhile, according to Tim Cato, Kidd "resented" the front office for trading Dončić. So perhaps there is room for Kidd to leave Dallas after all, especially as 18-year-old forward Cooper Flagg looks to become the face of the franchise. More: The Mavericks reportedly plan to select Cooper Flagg, not make another controversial trade Here is more from Robby Kalland (via CBS Sports): "Given the Mavs are headed in a new direction suddenly, they might be willing to move on from Kidd. The previous Mavs regime hired Kidd specifically with coaching Luka Dončić in mind, but Dončić is now gone, a new leadership group is in charge and with the Mavs landing the No. 1 pick (and thus, Cooper Flagg) in the draft lottery, the three-year title window they proposed when they traded for Anthony Davis has now widened considerably. Kidd probably sees the Knicks as being closer to a title than Dallas, especially with Kyrie Irving missing much of next season, and the Mavs might be willing to let him go to the East." The Knicks would effectively need to trade for Kidd in order to poach him from the Mavericks, but similar situations have happened before. In fact, Kidd was traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Brooklyn Nets when he became their head coach in 2014. Kidd played his final professional NBA season for the Knicks during 2012-13 campaign. He also coached Knicks star Jalen Brunson when the guard played for the Mavericks. As of right now, the Mavericks have not even given permission for Kidd to interview with the Knicks. But if they do and New York's front office likes what they see from him, Kidd may have to choose between coaching New York's roster versus a young rising star in Cooper Flagg.

Mavericks Trade Proposal Sees Team Move on From Anthony Davis
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After a very long year, the Dallas Mavericks are entering the NBA offseason with a ton of momentum. Despite not making the playoffs, the Mavericks did win the 2025 NBA Draft lottery. More NBA news: Thunder Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Speaks Out Following NBA Finals Game 1 Collapse Dallas will now have a chance to draft Duke star Cooper Flagg, giving them an expected generational talent for years to come. But with the likelihood of them drafting Flagg, the Mavericks now have a logjam in the frontcourt. But one new trade proposal would help the Mavericks break up the frontcourt by moving on from star big man Anthony Davis. Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report put together trades for all teams and had Dallas land a strong package for the All-Star. Here is what the deal looks like: Hornets receive: Anthony Davis Mavericks receive: Miles Bridges, Jusuf Nurkić, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2029 first-round pick and a 2031 first-round pick MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE - APRIL 18: Anthony Davis #3 of the Dallas Mavericks reacts against the Memphis Grizzlies during the first half of the Play-In Tournament at FedExForum on April 18, 2025 in Memphis, Tennessee. MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE - APRIL 18: Anthony Davis #3 of the Dallas Mavericks reacts against the Memphis Grizzlies during the first half of the Play-In Tournament at FedExForum on April 18, 2025 in Memphis, Tennessee. Photo byTrading away Davis right after the team landed him for star guard Luka Doncic would certainly be an interesting decision. But the team didn't get enough value from the Doncic deal, and this could be a way to help rectify that. This trade would likely be about getting off the large contract of Davis, mostly due to his long injury history. Dallas could net some extra draft capital as well, giving them some ammo for a larger move down the line. Bridges could slot into the rotation as a solid wing player, offering athleticism and shooting. His contract is also team-friendly, with Bridges only making a little more than $20 million in each of the next two seasons. More NBA news: Shaquille O'Neal Shares Harsh Criticism for Thunder After NBA Finals Loss Nurkić could help replace Davis in the frontcourt, while giving the Mavericks a decent expiring contract. Dallas could look to move Nurkić at the trade deadline for more future assets. All in all, a deal like this could help Dallas in the future. But if the team wants to contend for a title next season, keeping Davis around helps in that regard. Davis is one of the better big men in the entire NBA, and the Mavericks targeted him for Doncic for a reason. The Mavericks aren't likely to move Davis anytime soon, unless a deal that the team can't turn down falls into their lap. Knicks' coaching search about to take serious Jason Kidd turn: NBA insider
The Knicks are considering a Hall of Fame name with organizational ties in their coaching search after the firing of Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks will 'formally ask for permission…in the coming days' to speak with current Mavericks coach Jason Kidd about their vacancy, according to a report Friday by longtime NBA writer Mark Stein on his Substack account. Kidd, who played the final season of his NBA career with the Knicks during their 54-win campaign under Mike Woodson in 2012-13, led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals one year ago. Kidd's first year at the helm with the Mavs also marked the final season for Jalen Brunson in Dallas, and they developed a strong relationship before Brunson became a two-time All-Star point guard after signing with the Knicks as a free agent in 2022. The Mavs missed the playoffs after trading superstar guard Luka Doncic to the Lakers in February, but they landed the No. 1 overall pick — expected to be Duke's Cooper Flagg — in the lottery last month. 4 Jason Kidd during a 2025 press conference. NBAE via Getty Images Kidd began his head-coaching career with the Nets upon retirement as a player in 2013-14, but the former point guard spent only one season in Brooklyn before moving to the Bucks the following year. The Nets recouped two second-round draft picks as compensation. 4 Jason Kidd and Jalen Brunson (l) during a 2021 game. Follow The Post's coverage of the Knicks' stunning firing of head coach Tom Thibodeau The now 52-year-old Kidd spent three-plus seasons coaching Giannis Antetokounmpo early in the two-time MVP's career in Milwaukee, compiling a 139-152 record before getting fired 45 games into the 2017-18 season. 4 Kidd and Brunson in 2024. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Following two years as an assistant coach with the Lakers, he was hired in Dallas in 2021 to replace Rick Carlisle, who has fronted the Pacers to the Finals this spring. Kidd's career winning percentage as a head coach is .516 (362-339) plus a 31-33 mark in postseason play. Kidd signed a two-year contract extension through 2026-27 in Dallas in May of last year during the Mavs' run to the Finals, amid reports that the Lakers wanted to interview him to replace Darvin Ham. Kidd also had been considered by the Knicks and was reported to be the runner-up when the Knicks tabbed Thibodeau as their head coach in 2020. ESPN insider Tim McMahon reported earlier this week that Kidd's 'ears would perk up' if the Knicks expressed interest in him, adding 'I would not dismiss that possibility.' Team president Leon Rose axed Thibodeau after four trips to the playoffs in five seasons after the Knicks lost to Indiana last week in the Eastern Conference finals. 4 Jason Kidd during his time with the Knicks in 2013. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post Other names linked to the Knicks' opening include former associate coach Johnnie Bryant, who spent last season on Kenny Atkinson's staff with the Cavaliers. Stein also reported that any potential overtures by the Knicks seeking permission to speak with Houston head coach Ime Udoka 'would be swiftly rebuffed' by the Rockets.
