Real Madrid great Raúl ending his academy role to coach elsewhere
MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid great Raúl González is leaving his role as a coach in the club's youth academy.
The 47-year-old Raúl spent seven years in the academy and coached several youth teams in the 2018-19 season. He helped the under-19s win the Youth League in 2020.
'Raúl has informed the club of his decision to end his time as a coach at our youth academy,' Madrid said on Tuesday.
'Real Madrid is proud to have had one of the greatest legends in our history and world football as a coach and trainer at our youth academy. Raúl also exemplifies all the values of Real Madrid. Values that he has also passed on as a coach.'
Raúl said he enjoyed the job, which made him 'grow as a professional and as a person.'
'I want to thank the club of my life for the opportunity it has given me,' Raúl said. 'A new phase begins in my life as a coach outside of this club, with the certainty that I'll eventually return to this place that will always be my home.'
Raúl starred for Madrid as a player from the late 1990s until 2010, and with Spain until 2006.
'Raúl will always be in the hearts of all madridistas, and Real Madrid will always be his home,' the club added.

Oregon State blasts four home runs in support of freshman Dax Whitney and the Beavers defeat TCU 7-2
Associated Press CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Wilson Weber started Oregon State's four-homer attack with a three-run home run in the first inning, Dax Whitney struck out 12 batters and Oregon State went on to defeat TCU 7-2 on Saturday to stay alive in the Corvallis Regional. After Weber's home run, the Beavers got a solo shot from Trent Caraway leading off the second inning. In the third inning, AJ Singer led off with a home run and Tyce Peterson added a two-out, two-run blast. Whitney (6-3) pitched six innings, allowing four hits and two runs. The freshman's 12 strikeouts were a season high and the fourth time he reached double digits. Nelson Keljo pitched the final three innings for his second save this season for the Beavers. Both of TCU's runs scored on a home run by Isaac Cadena in the fifth inning. There were 13 hits and five home runs in the game. Oregon State had seven hits — a double and two singles in addition to the four home runs. TCU had two doubles and three singles in addition to Cadena's home run. On Sunday, top regional seed Oregon State (42-13-1), a three-time national champion, will play the loser of Saturday's semifinal between third-seeded USC and No. 4 Saint Mary's. TCU (39-20) was making its 20th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. ___ AP college sports: recommended in this topic

Stark avoids mistakes to take 1-shot lead into final round of U.S. Women's Open
ERIN, Wis. (AP) — Maja Stark shot a 2-under 70 and avoided the mistakes that befell other contenders Saturday to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the U.S. Women's Open at Erin Hills. The 25-year-old from Sweden had a 7-under 209 total. Julia Lopez Ramirez of Spain was second after a 68, the best score of the day. The Japanese trio of Rio Takeda (70), Hinako Shinobu (72) and second-round leader Mao Saigo (75) followed at 5 under. Top-ranked Nelly Korda was 4 under after a 73. Saigo took a three-shot lead into the day but slumped as Erin Hills proved much tougher for the entire field than it had seemed the last couple of days. Saigo made three straight bogeys at Nos. 4- 6 to drop into a tie for first. She made an 8 1/2-foot birdie putt on No. 12 to move back into sole possession of the lead, but Stark tied her with a 21 1/2-foot birdie on the par-3 16th. Saigo then bogeyed the last two to fall two back. Speedier greens and tricker pin placements wreaked havoc with just about everyone on the course, leading to plenty of double bogeys and triple bogeys. The most notable example of this came on the par-4 15th, when Esther Henseleit's eagle putt from 55 feet away rolled 90 feet beyond the hole and went into the rough. Henseleit ended up with a double bogey. Plenty of other contenders faced similar misfortune. A Lim Kim, who entered Saturday in a six-way tie for second place, birdied No. 1 to get to 6 under, then went 7 over for the next four holes. Kim bogeyed No. 2, double-bogeyed No. 3, triple-bogeyed No. 4 and bogeyed No. 5. She ended up with a 77. Jinhee Im and Yealimi Noh also had been part of that six-way tie for second at the start of the day. Im birdied two of her first three holes to get to 6 under before she triple-bogeyed the par-4 fourth. Noh also was at 6 under before a double bogey on No. 3. Im ended up with a 79, and Noh shot 75. Korda also struggled early before coming on strong late. Korda had a 40 on the front nine with four bogeys and no birdies, but rallied with three birdies on her last five holes. This U.S. Women's Open won't have a repeat champion. Yuka Saso, who won this event in 2021 and 2024, missed the cut. No Canadians made the cut. ___ AP golf:

Here's dirt in your eye. Freak pitch strikes airborne clod, and Oregon softball catcher pays price
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — As Oregon's catcher, Emma Cox knows All-American Lyndsey Grein throws lots of filthy pitches. Grein outdid herself Friday night at the Women's College World Series when she kicked up a clod of dirt with her cleats during her pitching motion against Mississippi. The clod was in the air when it was struck by the ball, breaking it into pieces. The 67-mph pitch ended up in Cox's glove and one of those dirt chunks in her eyes. She immediately came out of her crouch and went to her knees, reaching for her eyes through her mask. She was able to stay in the game. 'I thought it was dirt from my glove that must have hit me,' Cox said in an interview with an Oregon in-house reporter Saturday. 'And I was like, 'OK, whatever.' And then the umpire was like, 'No, it was a bug that flew into it and then the ball hit you, or the bug hit you in the face.' ' The dirt-in-the-eye pitch was one of those freak moments that probably couldn't be repeated, akin to Randy Johnson hitting a bird with a pitch in 2001. 'I didn't believe it until I saw the video,' Cox said in the interview. The Ducks won 6-5 in 10 innings and will play Oklahoma on Sunday in an elimination game. ___ AP college sports: Error!
