MUNICH, June 4 — Bayer Leverkusen have signed Netherlands goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Premier League side Brentford, the Bundesliga club announced on Tuesday.
German media reported Leverkusen paid €10 million (RM48 million) to secure the 31-year-old's services.
Flekken, who signed a deal running to 2028, will likely take over from current Leverkusen goalie Lukas Hradecky, who captained the side to their historic unbeaten league and cup double in 2023-24.
In a statement, Flekken said he was taking 'another special step in my career', adding that Leverkusen are 'a top German club with high national and European goals'.
Leverkusen are expected to undergo a rebuild this off-season, with former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag having already replaced the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso as coach.
Centre-back Jonathan Tah signed on a free transfer with German champions Bayern Munich, while midfielder Florian Wirtz is in talks to join wing-back Jeremie Frimpong in moving to Premier League winners Liverpool.
The Dutch 'keeper has Bundesliga experience, having spent five years at Freiburg before making the switch to Brentford in 2023. — AFP

Musk ‘very welcome' in Europe after Trump bust-up, says official

Elon Musk's row with Donald Trump saw the president threaten to strip him of government contracts estimated at US$18 billion. (EPA Images pic) BRUSSELS : Elon Musk is 'very welcome' in Europe, a spokesman for the European Commission quipped today, following the tech billionaire's spectacular public falling-out with US President Donald Trump. The Trump-Musk political marriage blew up yesterday as the president declared himself 'very disappointed' in criticisms from his former aide and top donor, before the pair hurled insults at each other on social media. At the commission's daily briefing, spokeswoman Paula Pinho was asked whether Musk had reached out to the EU with a view to relocating his businesses, or setting up new ones. 'He's very welcome,' she replied with a smile. The commission's spokesman for tech matters, Thomas Regnier, followed up by stressing – straight-faced – that 'everyone is very welcome indeed to start and to scale in the EU'. 'That is precisely the objective of Choose Europe,' he said, referencing an EU initiative in favour of start-ups and expanding businesses. Musk has been a frequent critic of the 27-nation EU – attacking its digital laws as censorship and berating its leaders, while cheering on the ascendant far-right in Germany and elsewhere. The tycoon's row with Trump saw the president threaten to strip him of government contracts estimated at US$18 billion – with Musk vowing in response to end a critical US spaceship programme. Explaining the rift, Trump said Musk had gone 'crazy' about a plan to end electric vehicle subsidies in the new US spending bill – as the bust-up sent shares in Musk's Tesla car company plunging.

Adidas investor AllianzGI to vote against chair's reelection at AGM

Allianz Global Investors has been identified as the 13th biggest investor in Adidas, according to LSEG data. (AP pic) LONDON : A leading investor in German sportswear company Adidas said today that it planned to vote against the reelection of chair Thomas Rabe at the company's annual shareholders' meeting on Thursday because he holds too many roles at other companies. Despite being concerned about the so-called 'overboarding' last year, Allianz Global Investors (AllianzGI)- the 13th biggest investor in Adidas, according to LSEG data – said it had supported Rabe's reelection last year on the basis that the company would find a replacement. 'Since then, the company has not presented a successor or laid out a 'convincing' succession plan,' Allianz said in a statement. 'We want to understand the key competencies required for the incoming chair to effectively lead the board, as well as how the search process is managed,' said Matt Christensen, global head of sustainable and impact investing at AllianzGI. 'The incoming chair should possess strong leadership skills, industry experience, unquestionable independence, and enough time to lead the board, especially in times of crisis,' Christensen said. Last year, leading proxy advisor ISS had recommended investors vote against Rabe's reappointment due to an 'excessive' number of roles at other companies, which include being chief executive at both RTL Group and Bertelsmann Management SE.

Amazon agrees to tackle fake reviews in UK, says regulator

In 2024, Amazon blocked more than 275 million fake reviews worldwide. (AFP pic) LONDON : Amazon has agreed to clamp down on fake online reviews of products advertised on its UK site, Britain's competition regulator said today. Google agreed a similar UK commitment in January after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched an investigation into the matter five years ago. Amazon 'has signed undertakings committing to enhance its existing systems for tackling fake reviews and catalogue abuse', the CMA said in a statement today. 'Catalogue abuse involves sellers hijacking the reviews of well-performing products and adding them to an entirely separate and different product to falsely boost its star rating', the regulator noted. The CMA said 'Amazon has committed to tough sanctions for businesses that boost their star ratings,' which could see them banned from its UK site. An Amazon spokesman told AFP that the company already invests 'significant resources to proactively stop fake reviews ever appearing… including on expert human investigators and machine learning models that analyse thousands of data points to detect risk'. They added that last year, Amazon 'blocked more than 275 million fake reviews (worldwide), with more than 99% of all products… containing only authentic reviews'. The UK regulator said that around 90% of UK consumers use online reviews when deciding on a purchase. It added that 'as much as £23 billion (US$31 billion) of UK consumer spending is potentially influenced by online reviews annually'. 'So many people use Amazon, from buying a new bike lock to finding the best coffee machine – and what's clear is that star ratings and reviews have a huge impact on their choices,' CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell said in today's statement. 'That's why these new commitments matter and help set the standard. 'They mean people can make decisions with greater confidence -knowing that those who seek to pull the wool over their eyes will be swiftly dealt with'. The CMA in May 2020 opened an investigation into 'several major websites' that display online reviews, which led to the opening of a formal probe into Amazon and Google 13 months later. 'The undertakings from Amazon and Google, alongside our recently published advice to review platforms, paint a clear picture of what the law requires from businesses,' Cardell said. 'Following this, we're now launching the next phase of our work. 'This will scrutinise whether review platforms, businesses who list products on them, and reviewers themselves, are complying with the strengthened laws around fake reviews,' she said.
