Busy commuter rail line re-opens after four months

Yahoo18-05-2025

A busy Glasgow railway re-opens on Sunday after being closed for four months due to work on electrification of the line.
Services between East Kilbride and Glasgow Central will resume with the 08:26 service leaving the South Lanarkshire town.
Since January, £140m of work has been carried out to the track affecting signalling systems, bridges and overhead line equipment along the route.
However, electric trains will not be introduced on the route until later in the year, once full electrification of the line is complete.

Mark Ilderton, ScotRail service delivery director, said the work would help make the line more reliable.
He added: "The modernisation works completed by Network Rail Scotland are a crucial part of building a better, more reliable railway for the future, and we thank our customers and the local communities for their patience while the improvements were delivered."
ScotRail previously said December 2025 was the target for electrification work on the line to be complete, with improvements to the line including a new station at East Kilbride, a new station with two platforms and an accessible footbridge at Hairmyres, and a new footbridge at Busby station.
The overall improvements will also include improved access at Giffnock, with a new accessible footbridge and a new station entrance at Clarkston.
A replacement bus service ran for the four months the line was not in operation.

This Is the World's Most 'Vibrant' Garden, According to Science

Spring has sprung, and as we move into the summer, we'll see more grass turn green, flowers blossom, and trees bloom into stunning displays celebrating Earth's beauty. The best way to experience all this magic is by visiting one of the world's most beautiful gardens, and thanks to a new study by hotel group Premier Inn, we know exactly where they are. The hotel chain, which recently released a study identifying the world's most "vibrant" gardens, named Kensington Palace Garden in the United Kingdom the world's best, with a vibrancy score of 254. "The garden, which surrounds the historic Kensington Palace, is known for its manicured flower beds, bright floral displays, and structured landscapes, all of which contribute to its high saturation levels,' Premier Inn said in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure . To calculate each vibrancy score, the company analyzed more than 150 gardens sourced via Google Earth. It extracted the HSB (hue, saturation, and brightness) values from each image, and then combined the saturation and brightness levels for each spot. Kensington wasn't the only UK garden to make the list. In fact, UK gardens swept the top three spots. Following Kensington Palace Garden was Kew Gardens, which nabbed a vibrancy score of 250, thanks to its "variety of plant species and coloured floral displays." The study added there are more than 50,000 living plants there, which add to the garden's color intensity. Rounding out the top three was Inveraray Castle in Scotland, the home of the Duke of Argyll. "The formal gardens are beautifully arranged with winding paths running between the flowerbeds, making the ideal setting for a relaxing stroll, while the castle is also famous for its vibrant rhododendron and azalea collection, which is best viewed during the spring months from late April to early June," the study noted. Beyond the UK, Argentina's Rosedal de Palermo came in fourth on the list, followed by the Nymphenburg Palace Gardens in Germany at No. 6, the Powerscourt Gardens in Ireland at No. 7, the Herrenhausen Gardens in Germany at No. 9, and the Dubai Miracle Garden in Dubai at No. 10. Bus drivers continue strike action over pay

Hundreds of bus drivers across the west of Scotland are continuing their strike action over pay. The Unite union said Stagecoach had failed to improve on a 4% "strings attached" offer tabled last November. It said 98% of its members had voted in favour of the industrial action - involving drivers at depots in Ayr, Arran, Ardrossan, and Kilmarnock. Stagecoach has said it wants a "fair and sustainable" pay deal for drivers that preserves the viability of bus services. The industrial action began last month and is planned to continue with six weeks of continuous action between 9 June and 21 July. Pickets were expected all day at the company's Ayr and Kilmarnock bus stations. Stagecoach said its services would be disrupted due to the industrial action. It said it planned to operate a "limited service with the drivers available". "We're working hard to minimise the impact of this disruption, but unfortunately, the limited services we're running will affect customers travelling in and around Ayrshire," it said on its website. "We're very sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding." It said it would share any updates of the impact on its services via its website.
