Air India flight to Vietnam returns to Delhi; ‘precautionary measure,' says airline

Indian Express5 days ago

An Air India flight from Delhi to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam returned mid-air on Thursday due to a precautionary technical concern, the airline said. Flight AI388 landed safely in Delhi, and all passengers disembarked, following which a replacement flight departed later the same day.
'Air India flight AI388 from Delhi to Ho Chi Minh City has returned to Delhi as a precautionary measure. The flight landed safely back in Delhi and all passengers have been disembarked and served refreshments while an alternative aircraft with fresh crew has been arranged to fly the passengers to Ho Chi Minh City,' an Air India spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added, 'We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers. At Air India, the safety of our customers and crew remains our top priority.'
According to Flightradar24 data, the flight departed at around 1.45 pm before returning to Delhi shortly after. A source in the airline said the replacement aircraft took off for Ho Chi Minh City at around 7 pm.
The development comes amid a slew of cancellations and disruptions experienced by the airlines.
On Monday, an Air India flight headed to Delhi had to return to Hong Kong because of a technical issue. The flight, AI315, was a Boeing 788. On the same day, an Air India Express flight bound for Ranchi returned to Delhi airport owing to a suspected technical issue. On June 13, an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi returned to Phuket and made a precautionary landing after receiving a bomb threat.
The cancellations and disruptions follow the deadly crash of Air India's London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner near Ahmedabad airport.

Qantas jet takes 15-hour flight to nowhere due to West Asian crisis

Passengers aboard a Paris-bound Qantas Airways Ltd. flight spent more than 15 hours in the air only to find themselves back where they started from in Australia after an Iranian missile attack shut down swathes of Middle East airspace. The Boeing Co. 787 jet departed Perth for the usual 17-hour haul to Paris at 7.35 p.m. local time Monday. It made it as far as the south-west fringes of Indian airspace when the airline was told about the missile attack, forcing it to turn around. The plane landed safely back in the Western Australian capital around 11 a.m. Tuesday. Another Qantas flight from Perth bound for London Heathrow was also affected and diverted to Singapore, Qantas said in a statement. Passengers on both flights will be accommodated overnight. The diversions will also affect the return flights from London and Paris, and Qantas said it is working through options for affected passengers. The airline said it would continue to monitor airspace availability and utilize a number of flight paths for flights to Europe factoring in weather and the security situation. Qantas's non-stop European flights from Perth routinely fly over the Middle East region, and at times have been forced to take longer detours to skirt airspace restrictions or stop in Singapore to refuel.

Airport urges NMC to keep areas with meat shops in flight path clean

Nagpur: As airports are reviewing their safety measures following the Ahmedabad crash, Mihan India Limited (MIL) has once again written to Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to keep the areas in the flight path of Nagpur airport clear of garbage to prevent bird hits. The meat shops in Sonegaon and Jaitala, areas close to the airport, remain a cause of concern. Large birds like eagles and kites are attracted to the chunks of discarded meat thrown around the shops, threatening bird strikes. In 2018, a Delhi-bound Air India flight carrying 180 passengers was grounded after a bird struck the right wing of the aircraft. NMC has been requested to ensure that shops keep the meat covered so that birds are not attracted to it. MIL, the state govt agency which currently operates the airport, has been sending such letters to NMC from time to time. Things have improved over time. Last week, yet another communication was sent, said the senior airport director, Abid Ruhi. An NMC official confirmed receiving the letter. "This is part of a regular process, and the civic body has been keeping the area clean despite challenges," the official said. Not just birds of prey looking for meat pieces, even kabutarbazi (pigeon flying competitions) poses a threat to the aircraft, said a source in the airport. "Pigeons reared by the locals for the sport hover above the airport. As the pigeons constantly fly in a fixed circuit, there is a likelihood of bird strikes. Repeated measures have helped control kabutarbazi too," said the source. In winter, the airport has to keep an eye on the migratory birds, especially the Siberian crane, that fly over the Ambazari Lake, which comes in the flight path. A designated bird watcher with binoculars tracks the movement and reports to the air traffic control tower if necessary, said a source. The white-colour cranes can be easily spotted, a source.
