Warren hospital takes big step for life-saving care
WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) — A big step for life-saving care has just happened in the Valley. An expansion at St. Joseph Warren Hospital has reduced the need for patients to go somewhere else for specialized heart care.
St. Joseph Warren Hospital got an emergency patient at 4 o'clock Tuesday morning. It was not routine.
'He was having chest pain for eight hours before he came in. When we took the first picture, his artery was blocked 100%,' said Dr. Fadi Naddour, interventional cardiologist.
That's called a STEMI, and blood flow needs to be restored to the heart as quickly as possible. Lucky for the man from Texas, St. Joseph had just started around-the-clock treatment of STEMI patients.
'Time is heart, and the longer it takes you to travel somewhere, the more likely your heart is to be damaged off, permanently and irreversible,' said Jill Stefanucci-Uberti, VP of medical operations.
Previously, patients would've been transferred to Mercy Health facilities in Youngstown or Cleveland. But the new team at St. Joseph did the work.
'The entire procedure took about 15 minutes, and he became chest pain free afterwards, and his EKG became so much better,' Naddour said.
St. Joseph embarked on this journey about a year ago. It opened a cath lab and has completed 140 catheterizations. It's also broadened access to pacemaker procedures. Some members of the team came from right down the road.
'I mean, we've been doing this at Trumbull for 20 years, and after Trumbull has closed, St Joe took over completely, so we transferred the entire team, the entire process,' Naddour said.
'You have plenty of new, fresh people who are excited to learn, who want to be a part of the process, who provided the heavy lift before Trumbull actually closed,' Stefanucci-Uberti said.
The first overnight STEMI patient is doing well and was expected to be released from the hospital Thursday.

Volunteers beautify Youngstown for summer with plants and flowers
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – If you've been in downtown Youngstown any summer, you may have noticed flowers and plants around the city. There's a lot of work that goes into beautifying the area, and it's happening Saturday. Youngstown Streetscape 2025 — it's the day volunteers get together to plant, mulch, pull weeds, and everything that needs to happen to beautify the city and get ready for summer. On Friday, thousands of flowers were delivered to gear up for the big day. Everything will get started at 9 a.m. Volunteers will meet at Penguin City Brewing Company for breakfast before they scatter all across the city. Around 1,000 volunteers are expected to show up for the 28th annual planting day, working in the downtown area and neighborhoods around Youngstown. 'People in the Valley are generous, care about what our city looks and feels like, really are very supportive. I also think the reason that so many of our volunteers return year after year is they can see the fruits of their labor,' said Sharon Letson, with Youngstown Cityscape. After Saturday, Youngstown Cityscape has a crew of about ten people who maintain the plants all summer long. 'Things that are showy so that when we have visitors at the Covelli Centre, when we have someone at DeYor, when our students from YSU — their parents are coming, that as a city, we look beautiful, inviting, welcoming to our downtown,' Letson said. High schoolers pitching in to clean up Struthers
STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – There will be lots of activity on Saturday in Struthers, and the community is invited to pitch in and help. City leaders will be hosting their annual Struthers Clean-Up Day, picking up litter and trash, holding used tire and appliance recycling drives, and performing some landscaping and beautification projects. It's an idea Mayor Catherine Miller started when she first took office in 2020. 'Tomorrow, we're going to be doing a lot of litter pick-up, so we're going to be walking the streets. We have a lot of kids from the high school coming. I talked to the football coach, the basketball coach — both women's and men's — our cheerleaders from the middle school and high school will all be here. So we have a lot of volunteers for clean-up day, we're just hoping the rain holds off a little bit,' Miller said. The work will begin Saturday around 8 a.m. and continue through the noon hour.
