KUALA TERENGGANU: A fever kept a Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student off the ill-fated chartered bus which was involved in an accident early this morning.
The student had been hospitalised the day before and could not board the bus which left Terengganu the night before, his brother revealed.
"My brother is one of the UPSI students who was supposed to be on the bus," said the student's sibling in a Facebook post.
"But he was admitted to Jerteh Hospital in Besut yesterday afternoon due to a fever."
Earlier, 14 UPSI students and a bus assistant were confirmed dead and seven others seriously injured when the bus they were travelling in overturned along Jalan Jeli-Gerik near Tasik Banding early this morning.
The chartered bus was carrying 42 UPSI students who were travelling from Terengganu back to the university's campus in Tanjung Malim.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the bus hit a Perodua Alza from behind before the driver lost control and the vehicle skidded off the road.

IPOH, June 11 — Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) has set up a special fund for public contributions following the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 15 of its students last Monday. UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff, in a statement, said donations could be channelled through the Student Representative Council Fund (RHB Bank: 25807500029702) and the UPSI Prihatin Fund (Bank Islam: 08068010003264). Transport Ministry to launch centralised database to track reckless bus drivers
KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry will set up a centralised database to monitor bus drivers with records of reckless or irresponsible driving. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the system would include all categories of bus drivers — including express, tour, and other public transport operators — to ensure that only responsible individuals were entrusted with the safety of passengers. "We aim to develop this database as a reference for bus operators and transport companies, particularly to identify drivers with prior offences," he said at Angkasapuri. Present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. Loke announced this following a fatal crash involving a bus carrying 42 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students travelling from Jerteh, Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim, Perak, on Monday. The accident, which involved a Perodua Alza on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding in Gerik, claimed the lives of 15 students. Police said the bus driver had 18 traffic summonses. Checks on the driver's record showed that 13 summonses were for speeding, one for an accident-related offence, three for not wearing a seatbelt, and one for a faulty third brake light. Meanwhile, Loke said there is no timeline for the database's completion, but the ministry will attempt to expedite the process. " We will also try to include information on bus operators and companies in the database. "It will be developed through the Road Transport Department and the Land Public Transport Agency. "We do not yet have a comprehensive database of all these drivers. What we have now is only a licensing system. "Whether they have a record, companies hiring them have no point of reference. "A driver who has shown poor conduct and was dismissed by Company A may end up being hired by Company B. That is what we want to prevent."

Teoh's family slams ex-Selangor exco's silence on NFA decision
The family of Teoh Beng Hock has condemned former Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah for his continued silence over the Attorney-General's Chambers'(AGC) decision to classify Beng Hock's case as no further action. In a scathing Facebook post, Beng Hock's sister Teoh Lee Lan expressed deep frustration that Ean Yong (above) - her brother's superior at the time of his death - has yet to speak up or take a clear stand, even 21 days after the AGC's NFA decision was made public. "Sixteen years on, and you remain...
