OnTrack to get behind French connection again

New Paper22-05-2025

BRISBANE - Reigning Doomben Cup champion Bois D'Argent boasts an obvious French name, but the team behind the big grey galloper believe he is as Queensland as it gets these days.
The now eight-year-old led all the way under Blake Shinn in the Group 1 staying event over 2,000m from Doomben this time last year to shock plenty as an outsider.
Though a four-time winner in France when trained by Marco Botti, including one at Listed level in a mile race at Longchamp in October 2021, Bois D'Argent - which means Silver Woods in French - did not quite set Australia alight with only one win in the Listed Mayors Cup (2,000m) until his Doomben Cup coup.
He has since struggled in Group 1 races, but did notch a Group 3 win in the JRA Plate (2,000m) at Randwick on April 19 before a sixth place to Antino in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1,800m) on the Gold Coast at his last start on May 10.
He is now aiming to go back-to-back in the Doomben Cup, but is again likely to be unpopular in a market skewed towards the Pride Of Jenni v Antino duel in the A$1 million (S$831,000) race this year.
But, with a big band of local owners cheering on their adopted Queenslander at the track, the price counts for little as they believe he has had a smoother preparation this time around.
Bois D'Argent is raced by top syndicator Grant Morgan and his OnTrack Thoroughbreds operation, better known for racing Brazen Beau, now a leading sire.
There are around 40 different owners in the seven-time career winner with the majority of those residing in the Sunshine State.
"We think of ourselves as Queenslanders, we're a bit like Bois D'Argent. We weren't born here, but we've become part of the furniture here in Queensland," said Morgan.
"We're very proud to have the majority of our horses in Queensland - it's our home - and we're proud to play a good part in the winter carnival each year.
"Our owners are spread out across Australia, but they're predominantly in Queensland.
"There will be a big lot of them at Doomben on Saturday, just as there was last year."
Bois D'Argent was originally secured in a private sale by Stuart Boman - who is a long-time friend of Morgan's - of Blandford Bloodstock for OnTrack Thoroughbreds from France.
Gavan Ryan, one of Bois D'Argent's new owners, travelled to Europe with an OnTrack Thoroughbreds tour in 2024, visiting where the English-bred son of Toronado was prepared before he was bought and moved to Australia.
"I said to Grant that one day I was eventually going to win a Group 1 and he has got it for me inside the first few years that I have been with him," said Ryan.
"There is nothing like it, getting a Group 1 here last year. Who knows, maybe we can go again for a second time on Saturday."
One of the persons Morgan and Ryan praised for Bois D'Argent's handling was trainers Annabel and Rob Archibald's Brisbane front man Todd Pollard.
The assistant trainer believes Bois D'Argent ran well in the recent Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1,600m) when sixth to Antino, and said he would be cherry-ripe for Saturday.
"They have been great supporters of Annabel and Rob from the early beginning," said Pollard of the OnTrack Thoroughbreds team. "They do import a few horses from Europe, which Annabel has had a lot of success with following the deeds of Zaaki.
"European imports are suited by the way she trains, getting some speed and life back into these older horses.
"Grant and his team have been fantastic and we have been lucky to have Bois D'Argent who has really gone on with it since he has been here. He has been a really nice horse for the stable."
Stablemates Fawkner Park and My Oberon will also represent the Archibalds in the Doomben Cup.
Morgan said the task is stiffer on Saturday, but his horse is a fighter.
"He'll have to go up to another level, but he doesn't know how to run a bad race this guy. He tries his heart out and I'm sure he'll do the same this year," he said.
Bois D'Argent is a 17-1 chance in pre-race market. Ryan Maloney takes the ride while Shinn is unsurprisingly sticking with his winning Hollindale ride, Antino.
The Archibald team have already had a stunning winter campaign so far in 2025, claiming last week's Group 1 Doomben 10,000 with Sunshine In Paris as well as the recent Group 2 Queensland Guineas with Depth Of Character and Group 2 Victory Stakes with Libertad.

Tudor to remain as Juventus coach, says new GM Comolli

Igor Tudor will remain in charge of Juventus next season after Damien Comolli, the club's new general manager, said on Tuesday that they had faith in the Croatian coach who was handed the reins less than three months ago. Tudor arrived in March after Juve sacked Thiago Motta, with the club having been knocked out of all the cup competitions and sitting outside the top four in Serie A. Juve lost only one more league game and finished fourth to qualify for the Champions League, but the 47-year-old warned his future must be decided before their Club World Cup campaign kicks off next week. "I want to confirm that Tudor will be our coach for next season. I have already made this clear to him and we are working together," Comolli told reporters. "We are a great club and there is a lot of speculation, but I want to reiterate that Tudor will remain our coach." Comolli, previously with French club Toulouse, is no stranger to Tudor's work. "When he was at (Olympique) Marseille he beat us twice. We even laughed about it," Comolli added. "The intensity, the physical and mental stamina that his Marseille had, impressed me. He did an exceptional job at Marseille." Comolli said he plans to hire a sporting director for transfers and a technical director to establish a clear structure at the club who have not won the Scudetto since the 2019-20 season when they lifted the trophy for the ninth year in a row. He also confirmed Randal Kolo Muani, who is on loan from Paris St Germain, would play in the Club World Cup even though his contract ends this month. "We have not reached an agreement for next season, but I am optimistic that we can reach one, because PSG has not closed the door and Kolo Muani wants to stay with us," Comolli said. Comolli also said he wants to speak to Dusan Vlahovic with the Serbian striker reportedly unsettled at Juve. Vlahovic was Juve's top scorer in each of the last three seasons. "I want to understand what he wants to do. He is a top player and something this season didn't work," he said. "He is a top player and we also have to understand his intentions from a contractual point of view. When I understand all these things, I will be able to decide". French Oaks under Italy-US raid

With horse racing becoming increasingly a big global village, Zia Agnese adds yet another international flavour to the €1,000,000 (S$1.47 million) Group 1 Prix de Diane (2,100m) at Chantilly this Sunday on June 15. The name of this daughter of Irish stallion Romanised is distinctively Italian, but she also has strong links from the other side of the Atlantic. Meaning "Auntie Agnes" in Italian, Zia Agnese pays tribute to one of the co-owners' aunt. Gina d'Amato is a Florida world-renowned oncologist who owns and breeds horses in both the US and France. She was passed down the racing bug from her father John, a long-time horse owner. John's sister is the aunt affectionately named "Zia Agnese" in the family. D'Amato shares the three-year-old filly with Italian-born Richard Marini, who is now a landscape entrepreneur based in Florida. Unsurprisingly, the duo have entrusted their pride and joy in the hands of an Italian trainer, Gianluca Bietolini, who moved from Rome to Maisons-Laffitte in Paris in 2013. The only true French connection comes through the reins - homegrown jockey Ronan Thomas. Bietolini may not have Group 1 silverware bursting from his trophy cabinet, but his best horse Grand Glory has put his name up in lights, including winning the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet (2,000m) in 2021. The daughter of Olympic Glory also ran third to Channel in the 2019 Prix de Diane, an effort the former amateur jockey is hoping to better with Zia Agnese. "She had already done a solid piece of work at the Maisons-Laffitte racecourse on May 24," said Bietolini to France Galop after Zia Agnese's final workout on June 4. "This time, she went over 1,800 metres with a pacemaker and another horse accompanying her in the home straight. "I'm very pleased with what I saw and, more importantly, her jockey Ronan Thomas was genuinely happy with her as well. "Now all we have to do is keep her in the same condition until the big day and hope for a bit of luck in the race." Referred to as the French Oaks, the 182-year-old Prix de Diane is the most prestigious French race for three-year-old fillies. Thomas became instrumental to the filly turning the corner when he got the call-up deep into her first prep. It was only after her first placed run in four starts when second in a Maiden (1,900m) at Chantilly on Oct 1, 2024 that Thomas was booked by Bietolini. The pair clicked immediately, with Zia Agnese shedding her maiden tag in a 1,900m race at Deauville on Nov 3, followed weeks later by another one in a Stakes race over the same trip at Chantilly on Dec 20. Upon resumption after a three-month layoff, Zia Agnese ran last in a small field of five in the Tourbillon Stakes (2,100m) at Saint-Cloud, but less than three lengths off the winner, the unbeaten Marchon. She had excuses as the ground was soft and she also cast a shoe. But the pair bounced straight back to the winner's enclosure at their next assignment, which came in one of the key prep races for the Prix de Diane, the Group 3 Prix Cleopatre (2,100m) at Saint-Cloud on April 18. No doubt, the Prix de Diane will be a sterner test, but Thomas, 47, who won last year's Prix du Jockey Club with the Carlos and Yann Lerner-trained Look De Vega, is an experienced pair of hands. One of the rivals to draw plenty of intrigue will be the Charlie Fellowes-trained Shes Perfect, controversially demoted from first place in the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (1,600m) or the French Guineas at ParisLongchamp on May 11. The win was awarded to the favourite Zarigana in the stewards' room, on the grounds of interference when Shes Perfect indirectly bumped her off when she could not stay on a straight line inside the concluding stages. manyan@
