Turkish high school students protest at teacher changes
ISTANBUL, April 14 (Reuters) - Several hundred Turkish high school students staged protests at more than a dozen high-performing schools on Monday against the replacement of their teachers by what they called political appointments.
The government denied claims that teachers who supported the political opposition had been suspended, while opposition parties and unions backed the students.

The ministry said the removals were routine administrative decisions, not linked to political views or activism.
Opposition parties and unions say the changes are political and damage the culture of top schools.
The protests echo earlier youth-led demonstrations following the jailing of opposition figure and Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
THE RESPONSE
The Education Ministry denied that teachers were reassigned due to political affiliations, calling the decisions part of a scheduled rotation policy.
Tekin urged opposition figures not to politicize schools or incite protests.
CHP Deputy Chair Suat Ozcagdas said the teacher removals 'destroyed the educational culture' of top schools and were part of a broader effort to raise "obedient generations."

UK warns British travellers to Israel: Situation could escalate quickly
LONDON, June 13 (Reuters) - Britain on Friday updated its travel guidance to Israel, saying the situation could escalate quickly following Israeli strikes against nuclear and military facilities in Iran. "The situation could escalate quickly and could pose significant risks, including missile fire," an update, opens new tab on the government's website said. The same warning was added to its advice for the occupied Palestinian territories. Britain also re-issued its travel advice for other countries including Iran, Iraq, Saudia Arabia, Egypt and Syria to include a warning on the risk of wider escalation.

South African assets sink on risk aversion after Israel's strike on Iran
JOHANNESBURG, June 13 (Reuters) - South Africa's rand and government bonds fell steeply in early trade on Friday, after Israeli military strikes on Iran drove investors toward safe havens. At 0657 GMT, the risk-sensitive rand traded at 18.04 against the dollar , 1.6% weaker than Thursday's close. The rand had been on a strong run for weeks, helped by local coalition partners resolving a budget dispute, talk of a lower inflation target and strong precious metal prices. The escalation in hostilities in the Middle East - a major oil-producing region - adds a fresh layer of uncertainty for financial markets at a time of pressure on the global economy from U.S. President Donald Trump's erratic trade policies. No major domestic data releases are due on Friday, but next week local consumer inflation (ZACPIY=ECI), opens new tab and retail sales (ZARET=ECI), opens new tab figures will be published. The yield on South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond was up 16.5 basis points to 10.25%.
