Community gathers at Brooklyn Park church in wake of Minnesota lawmaker shootings
Inside Grace Fellowship church in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, community members stricken with tragedy look for comfort and an answer to why.
"I was scared to go out of the house," said Judy Sprague from Brooklyn Park.
"I'm just thinking of the children that are left behind now," said Jan Cady.
Friends, family and supporters represented by Team Hoffman and Team Hortman T-shirts were at a Monday night community prayer as church leaders prayed for their families for guidance through an unspeakable trauma.
Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed early Saturday in their Brooklyn Park home, and state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot and injured at their house in Champlin.
"We're not here with all the answers, but we are here together to be part of the solution," said Joe Boyd, lead pastor at Grace Fellowship.
No one was prepared for this moment, Boyd said, and we may never know why it happened, but when things are uncertain, Boyd said to rely on faith.
"The message that I have is that we don't really know why bad things like this happen, but we know that there is a God who can help us and guide us and we need to put our faith and trust in him," said Boyd.

What Motivated Murray Kempton's Pacifism?
I'm grateful to Charles Lane for reviewing 'Going Around,' the collection of Murray Kempton's journalism that I edited (Bookshelf, June 3). I think it would please Kempton to be remembered so fondly in the Journal, 'whose editorials shine the shoes and press the trousers of American enterprise,' he once wrote, 'and whose news staff undresses American business down to the follies and frauds blotching its naked skin.' That was a compliment. He was a loyal reader. Yet I have to risk discourtesy to Mr. Lane, who praised my 'intellectual honesty,' by hazarding a word in defense of Kempton's youthful noninterventionism. As Mr. Lane points out, Kempton's pacifism in the 1930s and early '40s reflected a dreadful misapprehension—genuine myopia—of what it would take to stop Hitler. But the left-wing version of noninterventionism that he and his radical cohort espoused was rooted in what was essentially a humane drive to avoid the calamity of another world war and the permanent elision of the New Deal's welfare state into a national-security 'warfare state.'

New York City comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander arrested by immigration officers inside Manhattan court
New York City comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested by federal officers inside a Manhattan immigration court on Tuesday, according to a spokesperson for his office. Multiple videos on social media show Lander being put in handcuffs after officers surrounded him in a hallway at the court building as he's standing up against a wall next to another man. One of the videos shows Lander appearing to stand in the way of officers who were trying to arrest a man. As he blocks officers, the officers move in and arrest him following a brief scuffle in which Lander appears to be placed in a chokehold and is then pushed up against a wall, the video shows. 'You don't have a judicial warrant,' Lander says to the officers as he held on to the man's arm. 'I will let go when you show me the judicial warrant. Where is it?' Lander says. Lander, a Democrat was scheduled to hold a noon press conference Tuesday calling for more legal funding for immigrants facing arrest by ICE officers following their court appearances – a practice that has increased significantly across courtrooms in the country in recent weeks. As he was placed in handcuffs, Lander could be heard telling federal officers 'you don't have the authority to arrest US citizens.' CNN has reached out to ICE for more information. Lander's campaign released a statement following his arrest. 'While escorting a defendant out of immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, Brad was taken by masked agents and detained by ICE. This is still developing and we are monitoring the situation closely,' said Dora Pekec, Lander's campaign spokesperson. This story is developing and will be updated.
