Burglary creates panic at Bengaluru pub; masked man disables CCTV
BENGALURU: A burglary at a pub in Rajajinagar has sparked concern amongst locals and police officials after the pub's security guard reported that the intruder was carrying what appeared to be a pistol during the theft.
Police officials await a formal complaint from the restaurant management before proceeding with their investigation, though they have not confirmed the presence of a firearm.

The security guard spotted an intruder inside the premises around 4 am and promptly contacted the emergency helpline 112, reporting an armed individual within the restaurant.

Noida Police Tuesday said they arrested two journalists for allegedly blackmailing a news channel's owner and extorting money from him. A senior police officer told The Indian Express, 'The accused had extorted Rs 2.26 crore from the owner of the news channel by blackmailing and threatening to implicate him in a false case if he did not pay the remaining amount (Rs 62.74 crore). Three separate cases have been registered against them (based on complaints) by the channel's officials.' Police produced the duo before the Gautam Buddha Nagar District Court in the afternoon. They were sent to 15-day judicial custody. The complainant, Jagdish Chandra (75), owner of Bharat24 in Noida's Sector 62, alleged that the woman, Shazia Nisar, had been 'threatening to implicate' him in a 'false rape case' unless he paid her Rs 65 crore. Adarsh Jha — who used to work for a digital portal till a few days ago — has been 'helping' her, he claimed. The FIR reads: 'Shazia Nisar, 30, has been working as an anchor in my channel since 2022. She has been blackmailing me by threatening to implicate me in a false rape case and commit suicide. She has been illegally demanding Rs 60 crore from me. In the last year, she has taken Rs 2 crore 26 lakh through cheques several times. I have evidence of this (transaction). Adarsh Jha… is helping her blackmail me.' When contacted, Chandra said, 'She (Nisar) is a blackmailer. The law of the land will take its course. Her services have been terminated.' The officer quoted above said, 'Apart from the complaint filed by the channel owner, two more complaints were filed by the channel's consulting editor Anita Hada and HR head Anushri Dhar.' Officers from Noida's Sector 58 police station raided Nisar's home — she lives in Delhi — on Monday and arrested her. Police claimed that Rs 34.50 lakh in cash, three mobile phones, two laptops, and a Scorpio car were seized from her home. Police, simultaneously, raided Jha's home at Indirapuram, Ghaziabad, and arrested him. Chandra approached the police on June 8. His channel executives — Hada and Dhar — filed their complaints against Nisar on June 9. Hada said allegations of harassment made by Nisar were incorrect. 'Had that been the case, she would have filed a complaint against him… I would have supported her,'' she emphasised. Asked why they didn't approach the police earlier instead of paying her, she said, 'We were worried that this would harm the reputation of the company. According to police, Chandra, who is also Chief Editor and Chief Executive Officer of Bharat24, also filed a complaint against Nisar's mother. She has not been arrested, police said. Discoms: Power theft by e-rickshaws leads to losses of Rs 120 cr a yr
E-rickshaws in Delhi cause power losses of up to Rs 120 crore each year, officials from the city's power distribution companies said. According to sources, there are around 1.6 lakh e-rickshaws plying in Delhi but only about 50,000 are registered. 'In Delhi, it is estimated that over 60% of e-rickshaws are involved in power theft, resulting in a loss of 15-20 MW across the city, translating to an annual loss of around Rs 120 crore… This not only causes revenue loss but also leads to safety hazards,' said a senior official. On Sunday, two men were killed in a fire that broke out at a house in East Delhi's Dilshad Garden while two e-rickshaws were being charged. Last week, fire had erupted at an e-rickshaw charging station in the Ghonda in Northeast Delhi. Discom officials said the rickshaws were charged in batches 'as part of an organised illegal network controlled by local strongmen'. 'E-rickshaw owners/drivers pay a fixed fee of Rs 200-300 per day per e-rickshaw to the parking and charging mafia… The operators use illegal wiretapping from low-voltage mains to steal electricity. Some strongmen own several e-rickshaws and rent them to drivers,' said a senior discom official. Some of the areas where frequent power thefts by e-rickshaws have been witnessed across the city are Mandawali, Minto Road,Karol Bagh, Jama Masjid. Sangam Vihar, Batla House, Sarai Kale Khan, Tagore Garden, Paschim Vihar, Civil Lines, Mukherjee Nagar, and Narela. 'E-rickshaws are not dangerous; however, their illegal charging through direct theft and the use of sub-standard batteries are significant safety hazards. Exposed electricity wires left open during illegal charging and non-adherence to safety standards often cause sparks and short circuits. These exposed live wires also pose a danger to the public, especially children playing in these areas during the daytime. Such open wires have led to electrocutions in the past,' said officials. Officials said that this also leads to stress on the existing network causing possible breakdowns and voltage issues, inconveniencing other consumers in the area. The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has a special tariff category for e-rickshaw charging at Rs 4.50 per unit to encourage legal connections.

'15 hotel fire: HC orders BMC to pay 50L each to kin of 8 victims
Mumbai: Nearly a decade after a fire at Hotel City Kinara, Kurla West, claimed 8 lives, Bombay HC Tuesday ordered BMC to pay 50 lakh each compensation to their families, nailing it for gross negligence in discharge of its duties. Justices Burgess Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla said Kinara was granted an eating housing license without it obtaining any fire NOC from the fire brigade. "This, in our view, was one of the most egregious breaches committed not only by the owner... but also by BMC," they said, adding it was even more shocking that even after BMC became aware of the lack of fire NOC, did not take any action in that regard. They said BMC officials' deliberate inaction and negligence in fulfilling their duties led to loss of lives at Kinara. On Oct 16, 2015 the fire broke out around 1.20pm in the mezzanine. Among the dead were seven students, between 18 and 20years, of Don Bosco Institute of Technology and the eighth, a civil engineer (32). The court heard a 2018 petition by the victims' parents and wife to quash the Lokayukta's Feb 27, 2017 order which dismissed their complaint seeking investigation noting that Rs 1 lakh each compensation is disbursed. HC said by initially granting eating house license to Kinara without a FIR NOC and thereafter not taking action when it was discovered that Kinara was operating without a fire NOC, BMC committed gross negligence and acted totally in breach of its statutory duties. Justices Burgess Colabawala and Firdosh Pooniwalla said had BMC "promptly discharged its statutory duties by acting upon the fire safety violations and cancelled Kinara's licence, seized the LPG cylinders and prohibited the use of loft area/mezzanine floor for serving patrons, "the fire would definitely not have occurred. " "The loss of life of the petitioners' children/husband, has resulted in violation of their fundamental right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution of India. Further, as far as the petitioners are concerned, the loss of life of their children/husband has caused immense trauma and agony to the petitioners," said the judges in the verdict. The judges noted in three routine inspections—in Sept 2012, March 2013 and Sept 2015 —BMC found that Kinara was infringing various conditions of its licence. There was no letter from the chief fire officer granting permission to run it. It was using space outside the licensed premises to prepare Chinese food. The mezzanine floor was used for service instead of storage. One Martin Mathews' complaint to Vinoba Bhave police regarding storage of illegal LPG cylinders was forwarded to BMC but assistant commissioner of L ward "did not take the complaint seriously". In response to an RTI query, the fire brigade informed activist Nicholas Almeida that Kinara had no fire NOC. Advocate Godfrey Pimenta learnt from HPCL Kinara was not a registered customer of Laxmi Gas Agency. The judges agreed with senior advocate Naushad Engineer and advocate Jayesh Mistry for the petitioners that a higher standard of care was imposed on BMC to ensure public safety. They disagreed with advocate Anil Sakhare for BMC that there was no proximate cause link to acts of omission and/or commission of municipal officers and the fire and fatalities. The judges set aside the Lokayukta's order saying it failed to consider the Rs 1 lakh compensation each paid by the state govt to the families was only ad-hoc compensation. The judges said all victims "had a full working life ahead of them". Since the students were studying engineering (IT) or mass media and Arvind Kanaujia was employed at Sterling Engineering Consultants, "it would be safe to presume that, during their whole working life, they would earn a good salary". The judges said compensation of at least Rs 30 lakh each would be payable. Considering inflation and interest over 10 years, the compensation payable, in 2025, would be Rs 50 lakh. They directed BMC to pay each petitioner within 12 weeks failing which it "shall carry interest at rate of 9 % per annum...".
