David Beckham Is Set to Receive a Knighthood
Arise, Sir David Beckham! The former England captain, who was previously awarded an OBE back in 2003, is set to receive a knighthood as part of the King's Birthday Honors list, in recognition of his contributions to soccer and British society.
Beckham has undoubtedly had an illustrious career to date, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and one Champions League title with Manchester United, along with one Spanish league title and one French league title at Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain respectively. The sportsman is also a Unicef ambassador and played a key role bringing the 2012 Olympics to London.
Both David and Victoria Beckham—who was awarded an OBE for her services to the fashion industry in 2017 and will now become a Lady—have attended numerous royal events over the years, including a state banquet for the Emir of Qatar in December 2024 and a dinner at Highgrove House to celebrate the UK's relationship with Italy in February. They were also both in attendance at the Prince and Princess of Wales's wedding in 2011, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's wedding in 2018.
The King's honors are designed to recognize 'people from all walks of life, in public recognition of their merit, service, or bravery.' These are announced twice a year, on New Year's Day and the King's birthday on June 14. Others set to be recognised include actor Gary Oldman, who will also receive a knighthood; television presenter Claudia Winkleman, who will be made an MBE; former tennis player Virginia Wade, who will be made an OBE; and actor Adjoa Andoh, who will be made an MBE.

The plane was carrying 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese and one Canadian. One man survived. The monarch's annual birthday parade, known as Trooping the Colour, is a historic ceremony filled with pageantry and military bands in which the king reviews his troops on Horse Guards Parade adjacent to St. James' Park in central London. The military ceremony dates back to a time when flags of the battalion, known as colours, were "trooped,'' or shown, to soldiers in the ranks so they could recognize them. The ceremony of Trooping the Colour is believed to have first been performed during the reign of King Charles II. Since 1748, the Trooping of the Colour has marked the official birthday of the British Sovereign. Beckham, Goldman and the Who's frontman, Roger Daltrey, were knighted by the king, while Paige, Brooker Prize-winning novelist Pat Barker and former Conservative government minister Penny Mordaunt were given damehoods, the female equivalent of a knighthood. The honors, which aim to reward individuals for their contributions to British life, are awarded twice a year to celebrities and public figures as well as ordinary people: Once at New Year's, and then in June to mark the king's birthday. The winners are chosen by civil servants' committees based on nominations from the government and the public. The awards are usually given out by the king or a senior royal acting in his place at Buckingham Palace. Chris J. Ratcliffe -"Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honor," said Beckham, who was knighted for his services to sport and to charity for his partnerships with UNICEF and the U.N.'s children's fund. Daltrey, recognized for services to charity as well as music, has been a patron of "Teenage Cancer Trust" since 2000. He said he was humbled by the award. "It's a dream come true for me, but it's especially a dream because the charity means so much," he said. Paige said she is proud, grateful, thrilled and surprised by the honor. "I've got all these different emotions coming at me all at once," she said.

Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag set to seal first transfer after new job
Erik ten Hag is expected to complete his first piece of transfer business since his appointment at Bayer Leverkusen. The former Manchester United head coach was confirmed as Xabi Alonso's replacement over the weekend. Advertisement Ten Hag had been out of work following his exit from United last October, but he has now returned to management after a seven-month exile. The Dutchman has signed a two-year contract at the BayArena. Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Ten Hag, who will officially start his role on July 1, said: "I've come to Leverkusen to continue with the ambition shown in recent years. Advertisement Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes added: "With Erik ten Hag, we have brought in an experienced coach with impressive success on the pitch. "With three league titles and two domestic cup wins, he and Ajax dominated Dutch football from 2018 to 2022. "And Erik demonstrated his quality as a coach with the ensuing success at Manchester United under difficult circumstances at times." Now, just a matter of days since Ten Hag was unveiled as the new Leverkusen head coach, it has been reported that the German club are 'advancing to the final stages' of a deal for Brentford's Mark Flekken. Leverkusen are keen to strengthen their goalkeeping department and have set their sights on signing the Netherlands international, according to Fabrizio Romano. The 31-year-old is valued at around £8.4million and personal terms are not anticipated to be an issue, as club to club talks are underway. Advertisement Flekken has been one of Brentford's standout performers this season, having made the most saves out of any 'keeper in the Premier League (152). Despite this, he has kept just seven clean sheets in 30 matches. Ten Hag wanted Flekken at United before his £11m move to Brentford in May 2023. He has since made 70 appearances for Thomas Frank's side but is now closing in on a move to Leverkusen, with Liverpool shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher identified as a potential £20m replacement.
