United Airlines Announces New Offering for First Class Travelers
Earlier this month United Airlines quietly made a big move by placing an order for Airbus A321neo aircraft amid the airline's slight departure from its Boeing relationship.
'It's the first time in a really long time that we took an Airbus, and this airplane right here [A321neo] is our highest-scoring customer service satisfaction airplane that we have in our system," United Airlines' Chief Global Operations Officer, Toby Enqvist, said in a statement, revealing the new product is testing well with customers.
As United Airlines prepares for its future the company announced an expanded partnership that will benefit its first class passengers on domestic flight. The Cookie Department revealed it expanded its partnership with the airline while "elevating its mission to combine delicious snacking with meaningful philanthropy."
Previously the cookie company's Crispy Double Chocolate Chip flavor was available for purchase as a snack onboard. Now United Airlines is offering The Cookie Company's Buy a Bar, Give a Bar as a complimentary treat for First Class passengers on domestic flights.
"With every bar provided to travelers, The Cookie Department donates bars to support food equity and combat food insecurity. This initiative reflects the company's dedication to promoting nutritious options while making a tangible difference in communities nationwide," the company said in a statement.
The charitable offering comes in four flavors Comforting Apple Cinnamon, Wholesome Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, Zesty Blueberry Pomegranate, and Off-the-Vine Strawberry.
"United Airlines was the perfect partner to introduce the world to our cookies and bars, as well as our mission," Andy Sheldon, co-founder, president, and CEO of The Cookie Department said. "We are dedicated to creating exceptional products like Buy a Bar, Give a Bar, which aligns perfectly with United Airlines' mission to provide the finest passenger experience."

Aircraft startup JetZero to invest $4.7 billion over a decade in North Carolina HQ
By Allison Lampert (Reuters) -U.S. aircraft startup JetZero, which has secured investments from United Airlines and Alaska Airlines, will invest $4.7 billion over a decade on a production facility and headquarters in North Carolina, the state said on Thursday. The deal contains more than $1.1 billion in state performance incentives that would be paid over nearly 40 years and are contingent on JetZero creating over 14,000 jobs between 2027 and 2036, a state representative said. The company will manufacture its 250-seater Z4 blended wing bodied aircraft at an airport site in Greensboro, the state and company said in statements. JetZero would also benefit from an additional $450 million in infrastructure improvements to the airport facilities, along with city and county incentives, the representative said. JetZero, which has a conditional order for up to 100 fuel efficient airplanes from United, and options for another 100, is the latest startup to reach a deal for a factory at Piedmont Triad International Airport, with supersonic jet maker Boom recently opening a facility at the site. Aerospace companies are growing their footprint in the U.S. south, fueled by strong demand for aircraft and parts and comparatively lower costs than traditional U.S manufacturing hubs, although recruiting experienced labor remains a challenge. Several startup aviation firms are seeking to revolutionize travel by developing planes that emit fewer emissions to help airlines meet industry net zero targets, along with battery-powered aircraft that can take off and land vertically. Budget airline axes all flights to US as airspace restrictions bite
An Icelandic-based airline has announced it plans to axe all its flights to the US, stopping trips to major cities like Washington D.C. and New York by the autumn. Low-cost airline Play operates flights between Iceland and destinations in the US and Europe, offering budget tickets on Airbus aircraft to and from its main hub, Keflavík International Airport. Play flies in and out of Iceland to European countries such as Denmark, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. As well as Europe, the airline also directly links Iceland to Baltimore, Boston, and New York City. The airline operates on a hub-and-spoke model, meaning it uses one central airport, Keflavík, to connect to other airports around the world. Play launched its transatlantic flights in the spring of 2022, and has been flying to the US for just over three years. Play's hub-and-spoke routes have since financially underperformed, and an over-saturation in the transatlantic market has meant a growth in competition between airlines. Play will suspend its flights to New York Stewart on 1 September, followed by Boston Logan on 15 September, then finally Baltimore/Washington on 24 October. Its routes in Northern Europe are also expected to be scaled back due to Play dropping the hub-and-spoke strategy it has used since launching four years ago. The strategy has seen a loss of $20 million (£14.7 million) in 2024 in comparison to profits made in point-to-point European leisure markets. The restructuring will come as part of a proposed executive takeover by Play's CEO Einar Örn Ólafsson and Vice Chairman Elías Skúli Skúlason. In a notification to the Central Bank of Iceland, the executives said they plan to submit a voluntary offer for all outstanding shares in the airline via a new holding entity, Aviation Week reported. 'Due to airspace restrictions, several European airlines have redeployed capacity across the Atlantic, leading to overcapacity in the transatlantic market,' the offer document seen by Aviation Week says. 'Many carriers have suspended or terminated East Asia routes, facing a competitive disadvantage against Asian airlines still able to overfly Russia. 'This has increased pressure on transatlantic yields.' If the proposal is approved, Play's revised strategy hopes to target the leisure and VFR (visiting friends and relatives) market. The airline wants to target 'underserved sun destinations' and has recently announced new flights to Antalya, Faro and Agadir. 'We're focusing on the profitable aspects of the business—sun destination flights—and discontinuing those that have not yielded results,' Mr Ólafsson said. The airline will also offer wet-lease services, which provide short-term aircraft and crew to help other airlines fill gaps in schedules. The Independent has contacted Play for comment.

Boeing Gains 11% in a Year: Is This the Right Time to Buy the Stock?
Shares of The Boeing Company BA surged a solid 10.8% over the past year. However, the aerospace giant lagged the S&P 500's return of 11.9%. The stock has also underperformed the Zacks aerospace-defense industry's rise of 21.7% and the broader Zacks Aerospace sector's growth of 21.3% in the said time frame. Notably, shares of Embraer and Airbus have gained 59.5% and 10.5%, respectively. Boeing has been making notable strides in the stock market lately, supported by multiple contract wins, solid financial position and improved revenue performance in its commercial airplane business, which has been struggling in recent years. This, in turn, must have boosted investors' confidence in BA and thereby led to its aforementioned share price hike. Evidently, Boeing's revenues from the commercial aerospace segment surged 75% year over year to $8.15 billion in the first quarter of 2025, driven by higher jet deliveries. Meanwhile, the company's defense unit won key contract awards worth $4 billion in the first quarter, which resulted in a solid backlog amount of $61.57 billion for this segment as of March 31, 2025. Such solid contract wins and subsequent backlog count are indicative of the solid demand that Boeing's products enjoy in the defense market. Moreover, Boeing's cash and cash equivalents (along with short-term and other investments) at the end of the first quarter of 2025 totaled $23.67 billion. Its long-term debt was $45.69 billion, while current debt, as of March 31, 2025, was $7.93 billion. After a comparative analysis of the aforementioned figure, one may safely conclude that the American jet giant holds a strong solvency position, at least in the near term. Rising air travel and an aging global fleet are driving demand for new jets and aftermarket services, which, in turn, bodes well for the Boeing Global Services ('BGS') unit. To this end, Boeing forecasts a $4.4-trillion market opportunity for commercial aviation support and services during 2024-2043. With a strong $22.04 billion backlog, as of March 31, 2025, the BGS unit is thus well-positioned for sustained long-term expansion, backed by the aforementioned market growth opportunity. The rapidly growing commercial air travel also bodes well for other aerospace giants like Embraer and Airbus, which actively serve the commercial aftermarket services market through their Embraer Services & Support and Airbus Services units, respectively. Boeing's long-term defense outlook also remains strong, supported by rising U.S. defense spending and major program involvement, such as the F-47 Next Generation Air Dominance platform. Notably, in May 2025, the U.S. President proposed an increase of 13% in the nation's defense spending (to $1.01 trillion) for fiscal 2026. This should boost growth potential for Boeing's defense offerings in the years ahead. In line with this, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for BA's long-term (three-to-five years) earnings growth rate is pegged at 18.1%, higher than the industry's 11.8%. Now, let's take a sneak peek at the company's near-term estimates to understand whether the figures mirror similar growth prospects. Boeing's estimate for second-quarter 2025 sales suggests an improvement of 18.1% from the year-ago quarter's reported figure, while that for full-year 2025 sales indicates a rally of 25.6%. A similar improvement trend can be observed from its 2026 sales estimates. Its quarterly as well as yearly earnings estimates also reflect similar robust performance on a year-over-year basis. Additionally, an upward revision has been observed in the company's 2025 and 2026 earnings estimates over the past 60 days. This indicates that investors are gaining confidence in the stock's earnings-generating capabilities. Despite a recovery in air travel driving demand for commercial aircraft, persistent global supply-chain disruptions, especially shortages of critical parts, continue to hinder and are expected to affect the aviation industry in 2025. This remains a major risk for jet manufacturers like Boeing, Airbus and Embraer. Additionally, newly imposed U.S. tariffs on imported goods may worsen existing disruptions, causing further delays in sourcing components essential for Boeing's jet production. These delays could raise manufacturing costs and strain production timelines, making it difficult for Boeing to meet delivery commitments. Such operational setbacks may weigh on its financial performance and weaken investor sentiment. The image below shows that BA stock's trailing 12-month return on invested capital (ROIC) not only lags the peer group's average return but also reflects a negative figure. This suggests that the company's investments are not yielding sufficient returns to cover its expenses. While the ROIC for ERJ is currently 14.24, the same for EADSY is 4.71. In terms of valuation, Boeing's forward 12-month price-to-sales (P/S) is 1.78X, a premium to its peer group's average of 1.75X. This suggests that investors will be paying a higher price than the company's expected sales growth compared to that of its peer group. BA currently has a VGM Score of F, which is also not a very favorable indicator of strong performance.
