EC hits back at Gandhi over allegations

Hindustan Times23-04-2025

The Election Commission of India on Tuesday rejected Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's allegations of abnormal voter turnout in the last two hours of the assembly polls in Maharashtra, asserting the party did not flag any such abnormality during or after voting, even as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that Gandhi's remark on the poll body was an attempt to deflect attention from the National Herald case.
The ECI response comes days after the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha alleged at an event in the US on Sunday that the poll body is 'compromised'. The former Congress chief said that according to ECI data, more people voted in the November 20, 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections than there were adults in the state.
'The Election Commission gave us a voting figure for 5.30 pm, and between 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm, 65 lakh (6.5 million) voters voted. This is physically impossible. For a voter to vote, it takes approximately three minutes and, if you do the math, it would mean that there were lines of voters till 2 am but this did not happen,' Gandhi had said, while addressing the Indian diaspora at an event in Boston.
Rejecting the claims, ECI underlined that 6.40 crore (64 million) electors who reached the polling stations from 7 am to 6 pm voted in the Maharashtra polls, which effectively meant about 58 lakh (5.8 million) votes were polled per hour on an hour.
'Going by these average trends, nearly 116 lakh (11.6 million) voters could have voted in the last two hours. Therefore, casting of 65 lakh (6.5 million) votes by electors in two hours is much below the average hourly voting trend,' ECI said in a statement.
The Congress leader had also alleged that when they asked ECI for videos, the request was not only refused but also the law was changed. 'It is very clear to us that the Election Commission is compromised, and it is very clear that there is something wrong with the system. I have said this multiple times,' Gandhi had alleged.
ECI officials rejected the claims, stating that at every polling booth, voting was conducted in the presence of polling agents formally appointed by candidates or political parties. 'Indian National Congress's nominated candidates or their authorised agents have not raised any substantiated allegations regarding abnormal voting during scrutiny before the Returning Officer and the Election Observers the next day,' an official said, requesting anonymity.
According to ECI, after the finalisation of electoral rolls last year for the Maharashtra elections, out of 97.79 million electors, only 89 appeals were filed before the first appellate authority, the district magistrate, and only one was filed before the second appellate authority, the chief electoral officer.
'Therefore, it is amply clear that there was no grievance from the INC or any other political party before the conduct of the Maharashtra Assembly Elections in 2024,' ECI said.
It added: 'Any misinformation being spread, by anyone, is not only a sign of disrespect towards law, but also brings disrepute to the thousands of representatives appointed by their own political party and demotivates lakhs of election staff who work untiringly and transparently during elections. After any unfavourable verdict by the voters, trying to defame the Election Commission by saying that it is compromised, is completely absurd.'
Meanwhile, BJP national spokesperson Nalin Kohli slammed Gandhi over his remarks on ECI, accusing the Congress lawmaker of attempting to divert attention from the National Herald case, in which Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a charge sheet naming Sonia and Rahul Gandhi as accused in connection with its ₹988-crore money laundering probe.
'Rahul Gandhi's remarks on the Election Commission and democracy in India and conduct of elections establish that the Congress is trying to divert attention from the National Herald case by attacking institutions,' Kohli alleged, while addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters in Delhi.
Kohli said ECI has an impeccable record, and many, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have won elections.
'For their own political and personal reasons, the Nehru-Gandhi family and the Congress party are willing to attack even the institutions of India,' he added.

We've pushed back 330 illegal foreigners, none of them has returned: Assam CM

Guwahati, June 9 (UNI) Iterating the BJP-led Assam government's stern stand on Bangladeshi citizens entering or living in India illegally, state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday informed the Assembly that the government has pushed back almost 330 such unauthorised foreigners, and none of them has returned. 'It is not possible for them to return, and we are firm on this. And this pushback will be intensified, it will be expedited. The way illegal immigrants have entered the state from Bangladesh and Pakistan, we have to be more proactive to keep the state safe," said Sarma. The Chief Minister was replying to a demand by opposition members, including Congress' Debabrata Saikia and AIUDF's Ashraful Hussain to discuss on the issue of National Register of Citizens (NRC). While raising the issue, Saikia said that while the government has claimed to have pushed back illegal foreigners, some of them again entered Assam, making the government's stand vague on the issue. The Chief Minister further informed the House that the state government has also decided to reinforce the Illegal (Expulsion from Assam) Act 1950. "Under the Illegal Expulsion Act 1950, the District Commissioner, if he is reasonably convinced that a certain individual is a foreigner, can remove that individual without referring a case to the Tribunal," he said. The Chief Minister said the government has taken inspiration from former Chief Minister Bimala Prasad Chaliha, who had pushed back illegal immigrants. 'We are taking inspiration from the good works of the Congress,' he said while referring to Chaliha, who was a Congress Chief Minister. "There are two ways to identify illegal immigrants in Assam — one is the Tribunal and the other is the Illegal Expulsion Act 1950. There the word 'push back'is not there, but 'remove' is there," he added Expressing his concern over the issue, the Chief Minister further said that the government has found out almost 2600 Facebook accounts, which were operated from Islamabad, Riyadh and Saudi Arab. "They don't even welcome Rahul Gandhi, but welcome one particular individual from Assam. And I have documents, within the next ten to 12 days I'll provide some information about such accounts to the press,' he said. 'These accounts post only on two occasion, either on Palestine or on Assam, nothing else. I am not saying that the Muslims of Assam are not indigenous. Indigenous is a secular definition. ... There is a big conspiracy and we must resist it through the process of law,' he added. UNI ANP SSP

Rahul seeks immediate action against culprits

Bhopal: Lok Sabha LOP Rahul Gandhi on Monday said that the 11 years of Narendra Modi govt was full of humiliation, violence, and discrimination against Dalits. Rahul Gandhi was reacting to the death of 19-year-old Dalit youth Pankaj Prajapati in Bilahari, Chhattarpur district on Sunday. Taking to X, Rahul Gandhi said, "In Madhya Pradesh, 19-year-old Pankaj Prajapati was shot dead in public only because he, being a Dalit, demanded his share of rights. FIR was not registered, postmortem was postponed – because the guilty leader is sitting in the lap of power and the power belongs to Manuwadi and anti-Bahujan BJP." He added, "The 11 years of Modi govt was full of humiliation, violence, and discrimination against Dalits, adivasis, backward classes, and minorities. The conspiracy to institutionally make them second-class citizens and keep them away from the mainstream is continuing. The culprits should be arrested immediately and given the harshest punishment. I stand with the Prajapati family and every Bahujan of the country. This is a fight for respect, justice, and equality, and we will win this fight at all costs." State Congress president Jitu Patwari said that the Bilahari firing incident exposes the failure of law and order in MP. "This heinous crime has once again exposed the deteriorating law and order situation in Madhya Pradesh under the BJP govt," he said. TNN

Assembly resolution to rename Dibrugarh airport after Bhupen

1 2 3 Guwahati: Assam assembly on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre to rename the Dibrugarh airport in honour of the legendary musician Dr Bhupen Hazarika as the state prepares a year-long centenary celebration of his birthday from Sept 8. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with ministers and MLAs from both the treasury and opposition benches, paid tributes to Hazarika's enduring legacy, especially his message of universal love and humanity through his creative works. Several members even sang his iconic songs and recited his compositions. State transport minister Jogen Mohan moved the govt resolution recommending that the central govt rename the Dibrugarh airport as 'Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika Airport, Dibrugarh', during the day-long special session convened for this purpose. Sarma said the special session was convened because an Assembly resolution is mandatory for renaming any airport or railway station. "First, the state cabinet has to make the decision. It has to be passed by the Assembly and then, the union cabinet will approve it. This has paved the way for renaming the airport anytime now after Sept 8," he added. Sarma, participating in the discussion, emphasised Hazarika's identity as a 'humanist' above anything else. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Don't Forget To Block Ads Before Monday Lifestyle Tech Tips Click Here Undo Prime Minister Narendra Modi will grace the inauguration of the centenary birthday celebration here on Sept 8.
